Chapter 13: The Woman Behind the Legacy

Nobody spoke.

The woman standing in Laura’s old studio looked too calm for someone who had just walked into a room full of people who believed she was dead.

Patrick stared at her like his mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.

“Mother?””

Evelyn Bannon smiled faintly.

Not warmly.

Not lovingly.

Like someone watching a game unfold exactly as planned.

“Yes, Patrick.””

His face drained of color.

“But you died.””

“No.””

The answer was simple.

Cruel.

“I allowed people to believe I did.””

Jillian felt Cody move closer to her.

She wrapped an arm around him.

Evelyn noticed.

“You always did that.””

Jillian narrowed her eyes.

“Did what?””

“Protected people who weren’t yours.””

The words were meant to hurt.

They did.

But Jillian refused to show it.

“Cody is not a possession.””

Evelyn looked at the teenager.

“That is exactly why he is dangerous.””

Cody frowned.

“I don’t even know you.””

“No.””

Evelyn stepped closer.

“But you know what your mother left behind.””

Shawn moved in front of Cody.

“Stay away from him.””

Evelyn laughed softly.

“Still pretending you’re the protector.””

Shawn’s expression hardened.

“You tried to kill me.””

“I tried to preserve the family.””

“You destroyed it.””

Evelyn looked around the room.

“At least I kept it alive.””

Patrick finally found his voice.

“Why?””

Everyone looked at him.

His mother turned.

“Why did you do all this?””

For a moment, something almost human crossed her face.

Pain.

Then it disappeared.

“Because your father was weak.””

Patrick froze.

“My father?””

“Malcolm believed fear was enough.””

She walked toward the table.

“He thought controlling people was the same as leading them.””

“And you?””

Evelyn touched the old metal box.

“I understood something he never did.””

“What?””

“People don’t follow fear forever.””

Her eyes moved to Cody.

“They follow inheritance.””

Jillian felt disgust rise in her chest.

“You manipulated everyone for money.””

“No.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“For survival.””

She opened the folder on the table.

Inside were old photographs.

Documents.

Records.

The history of the Bannon family.

“The world changes,” Evelyn said.

“Families like ours either adapt or disappear.””

Shawn stepped forward.

“You murdered Laura.””

The room froze.

Cody looked at him.

“What?””

Evelyn’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Jillian saw it.

The smallest crack.

“You don’t know what you’re saying.””

“Yes, I do.””

Shawn’s voice shook with anger.

“Laura found everything.””

He looked at Cody.

“She found the accounts. The agreements. The names.””

Cody stared at Evelyn.

“You knew my mother?””

Evelyn looked at him.

“Yes.””

“How?””

A long pause.

Then she answered:

“She was my enemy.””

The words cut deeper than an insult.

Cody looked away.

Jillian stepped forward.

“You let a child grow up without his mother.””

Evelyn looked at her coldly.

“Children are the price families pay for power.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because hearing someone say it out loud made it real.

Patrick looked sick.

“I spent my entire life trying to make you proud.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“You were always the weakest.””

That broke something inside him.

Not loudly.

Quietly.

Like glass cracking.

Emmett watched Patrick carefully.

Then looked at Evelyn.

“You came here for the box.””

“Yes.””

“You need the documents.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Evelyn smiled.

“Because they prove I was right.””

Shawn shook his head.

“No.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What?””

Shawn reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small recording device.

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“You recorded me.””

“No.””

Shawn pressed a button.

“I recorded everyone.””

A voice played.

Evelyn’s own voice.

Clear.

Cold.

Children are the price families pay for power.

Her face changed.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

Emmett smiled slightly.

“You walked into a trap.””

Evelyn stepped back.

Then she laughed.

“You think this ends with one recording?””

She looked at Cody.

“You still don’t understand.””

“What?””

Evelyn pointed toward the letters.

“Your mother hid something more important than evidence.””

Cody stared.

“What?””

Evelyn smiled.

“The truth about who you really are.””

Before anyone could react, the lights went out.

Again.

A scream came from outside.

Then a gunshot.

When the lights returned, Evelyn was gone.

And on the table was one thing she left behind.

A photograph.

Of Cody.

Taken years before.

May you like

With a man standing beside him.

A man Cody had never met.
