Chapter 6: The Man Who Betrayed Her

The warehouse smelled like dust, oil, and old memories.

Jillian stepped inside behind Emmett.

Every instinct told her to run.

But she had already spent too much of her life running.

Running from questions.

Running from uncomfortable truths.

Running from the parts of Patrick’s family that never made sense.

Now she needed answers.

“Patrick?””

Her husband stepped out from behind a concrete pillar.

Alive.

Uninjured.

Alone.

For one second, relief overwhelmed her.

Then anger replaced it.

“You.””

Patrick looked exhausted.

Not guilty.

Not angry.

Just tired.

“Jillian.””

She walked toward him.

“What did you do?””

He swallowed.

“I was trying to protect you.””

A bitter laugh escaped her.

“By letting your family chase me through the woods?””

“No.””

“By making me think Cody was missing?””

Patrick looked away.

And that was when she knew.

He knew.

“Where is Cody?””

“He’s safe.””

“Where?””

“I can’t tell you.””

Jillian stared at him.

“You brought me here to say that?””

Emmett stepped forward.

“Patrick.””

Patrick looked at him.

The two men stared at each other.

There was history there.

A history Jillian did not understand.

“You knew,” Emmett said.

Patrick’s jaw tightened.

“Yes.””

“You knew what Malcolm was planning.””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing.””

Patrick looked at Jillian.

“I was trying to find another way.””

“Another way?””

Her voice cracked.

“You watched them corner me.””

“I was trying to keep Cody hidden.””

“From who?””

Patrick hesitated.

That hesitation answered everything.

“From your father?””

“No.””

“From Malcolm?””

Silence.

Then Patrick whispered:

“From me.””

Jillian froze.

“What?””

Patrick closed his eyes.

“Years ago, Shawn discovered what Malcolm had done.””

Emmett moved closer.

“Tell her.””

Patrick looked at him with anger.

“You don’t get to order me.””

“No.””

Emmett’s voice was quiet.

“But Cody deserves the truth.””

Patrick looked broken.

Then he finally spoke.

“My father destroyed Shawn.””

Jillian felt the air leave her lungs.

“What?””

“Shawn found evidence. He was going to expose Malcolm.””

“Then why didn’t he?””

Patrick looked down.

“Because Malcolm threatened Cody.””

The warehouse became silent.

Jillian whispered:

“Cody was a child.””

“I know.””

“And you let this happen?””

Patrick flinched.

“I was afraid.””

That was the first honest thing he had said.

Jillian felt tears burn her eyes.

Not because she forgave him.

Because she finally understood.

Patrick was not the powerful Bannon son she imagined.

He was another person trapped inside the same family.

“Where is Cody?””

Patrick looked toward the back room.

“He’s with someone who can protect him.””

“Who?””

A sound came from behind them.

A door opening.

Everyone turned.

A teenage voice spoke.

“Mom?””

Jillian stopped breathing.

“Cody?””

He stepped into the light.

She ran.

She grabbed him so tightly he laughed through his tears.

“You’re okay.””

“I’m okay.””

“Are you hurt?””

“No.””

She touched his face.

“Who brought you here?””

Cody looked past her.

At Emmett.

Then at Patrick.

Then whispered:

“Uncle Shawn.””

Jillian froze.

“What?””

Cody reached into his backpack.

The same backpack he always carried.

The one full of drawings.

He pulled out an old index card.

“I found this hidden in my father’s studio.””

Jillian took it.

On the front was a drawing.

A man standing beside a locked door.

On the back were words.

Words written by Shawn Bannon.

The truth is not hidden from Cody.

It is hidden because of Cody.

Jillian looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Before anyone could answer, every light in the warehouse went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Then a single phone rang.

Not Jillian’s.

Not Patrick’s.

Emmett’s.

He answered.

A voice came through the speaker.

A voice they all recognized.

Malcolm Bannon.

“You brought the boy together.””

A pause.

“Thank you.””

Emmett’s expression changed.

“Where are you?””

Malcolm laughed softly.

“I’m exactly where I need to be.””

The call ended.

And on the warehouse wall, a projector suddenly turned on.

A video appeared.

Shawn Bannon.

Alive.

Speaking directly to the camera.

“If you’re watching this…”

Shawn looked terrified.

“…then Malcolm knows about Cody.””

Jillian stared.

Because the impossible was happening.

Shawn Bannon was supposed to be dead.

But he was on the screen.

And he was about to reveal the secret that destroyed the entire Bannon family.
