Chapter 14: The Final Secret

The photograph was old.

Faded.

But the image was clear.

A young Cody stood outside Laura’s old house.

Smiling.

Holding a drawing.

Beside him was a man.

A man Jillian did not recognize.

Neither did Patrick.

But Shawn did.

His face changed the second he saw it.

“No.””

Jillian looked at him.

“You know him.””

Shawn didn’t answer.

“Shawn.””

He took the photograph slowly.

His hands were shaking.

“That’s Daniel.””

Everyone froze.

“The lawyer?””

Shawn nodded.

“But that’s impossible.””

Patrick stared.

“Daniel was always with Malcolm.””

“No.””

Shawn looked at the picture.

“Not always.””

Cody stepped closer.

“Who is he?””

Shawn looked at him.

“Your mother’s brother.””

The room went silent.

Cody blinked.

“My uncle?””

“Yes.””

Jillian felt overwhelmed.

“How did nobody know?””

“Because Laura changed her name when she left.””

Shawn looked at the photograph.

“Her family was connected to the original Bannon companies.””

Patrick frowned.

“Then why was Daniel working with Malcolm?””

Shawn’s expression darkened.

“Because Daniel wasn’t helping Malcolm.””

A pause.

“He was trying to bring him down.””

Everyone stared.

“What?””

Shawn explained.

“Daniel infiltrated the family years ago.””

Emmett nodded slowly.

“That explains the ring.””

Jillian looked confused.

“What ring?””

“The one Malcolm took.””

Shawn looked at the photograph.

“Daniel was carrying Shawn’s ring because I gave it to him.””

Patrick stepped back.

“So Daniel was helping you.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did everyone think he betrayed us?””

Shawn looked toward the door where Evelyn had disappeared.

“Because Evelyn wanted us to think that.””

The truth hit like a wave.

Every betrayal.

Every secret.

Every lie.

Had been carefully arranged.

Jillian looked at Cody.

“Your mother knew all of this?””

“Yes.””

“And she hid it?””

“She protected him.””

Shawn looked at Cody.

“Like you protected him.””

Cody looked down.

“I don’t feel protected.””

Jillian knelt beside him.

“Why?””

“Because everyone keeps deciding things for me.””

That sentence silenced everyone.

Because it was true.

All his life, adults had moved pieces around him.

Bannon.

Carbone.

Everyone.

Shawn crouched down.

“I’m sorry.””

Cody looked at him.

“You should have trusted me.””

Shawn swallowed.

“You’re right.””

The honesty surprised him.

“I thought protecting you meant keeping you away from the truth.””

Cody looked at the photograph.

“But the truth found me anyway.””

Hours later, they found Daniel.

Not hiding.

Waiting.

He sat in an old church outside the city.

When Jillian saw him, she understood immediately.

He looked exhausted.

Not guilty.

Just tired.

“I knew you would come.””

Emmett stepped forward.

“Where is Evelyn?””

Daniel looked down.

“She’s going to Malcolm’s old estate.””

“Why?””

“To destroy the last evidence.””

Shawn looked at him.

“You knew.””

Daniel nodded.

“I knew everything.””

Patrick’s voice was bitter.

“And you let us suffer.””

Daniel looked at him.

“No.””

He looked at Shawn.

“I watched you suffer because I promised your mother I would protect Cody.””

Jillian froze.

“My mother?””

Daniel nodded.

“Laura knew she would not survive.””

Cody looked away.

Daniel continued.

“She asked me to stay close.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew Evelyn would eventually come for him.””

Cody touched the photograph.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Daniel looked at him sadly.

“Because your mother made me promise.””

The answer hurt.

But Cody understood.

Then Daniel handed Shawn a small envelope.

“She left this for you.””

Shawn opened it.

Inside was a letter.

One page.

He read silently.

Then his eyes filled.

“What does it say?””

Shawn looked at Cody.

“It says she was never afraid of losing power.””

A pause.

“She was afraid of losing you.””

Cody looked down.

For the first time, he looked like a child who had missed his mother.

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

Everyone turned.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What?””

He listened.

Then handed the phone to Shawn.

A voice came through.

Evelyn.

“You found the truth.””

Shawn’s expression hardened.

“What do you want?””

Her answer was quiet.

“Nothing.””

A pause.

“I already have what I need.””

Everyone looked at Cody.

The call ended.

Daniel looked terrified.

“What?””

He whispered:

“She has Cody’s original birth records.””

Jillian felt cold.

“Why?””

Daniel looked at her.

“Because the final secret isn’t about money.””

May you like

He swallowed.

“It’s about who Cody’s father really was.””
