Chapter 11: The Father Who Chose to Disappear

Cody did not move.

Neither did Jillian.

The man standing in front of them was a ghost.

A memory.

A person who should not exist.

Patrick walked forward first.

His face was filled with anger and disbelief.

“You let me bury you.””

Shawn looked down.

“I know.””

“You let me think you were dead.””

“I had no choice.””

Patrick laughed.

A painful sound.

“No choice?””

He stepped closer.

“You could have called me.””

“I couldn’t.””

“Why?””

Shawn looked at Jillian.

Then Cody.

“Because Malcolm was watching everyone.””

Patrick’s anger faded slightly.

Not because he forgave him.

Because he remembered.

He remembered what Malcolm was capable of.

Shawn walked toward Cody.

The boy backed away.

“You’re my father.””

It wasn’t a question.

Shawn nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Shawn looked broken.

“Because if Malcolm knew I was alive, he would come after you.””

Cody’s voice trembled.

“He already did.””

The words destroyed Shawn.

He closed his eyes.

“I know.””

Jillian stepped forward.

“You let everyone suffer.””

Shawn looked at her.

“I know.””

“You let Cody think he lost his father.””

“I know.””

“Patrick thought he failed you.””

“I know.””

Her voice cracked.

“Then explain.””

Shawn took a deep breath.

“Twenty years ago, Malcolm started something that could destroy the family.””

Emmett crossed his arms.

“The partnership.””

Shawn nodded.

“Yes.””

Jillian looked between them.

“What partnership?””

Shawn sat down.

For the first time, he looked less like a powerful businessman.

More like a tired father.

“Your families built their fortunes together.””

“Carbones and Bannons?””

“Yes.””

“Then why pretend to hate each other?””

“Because Malcolm needed enemies.””

Shawn looked at Emmett.

“And he needed someone to blame.””

Emmett’s expression hardened.

“He blamed my father.””

Shawn nodded.

“Then he took control.””

Patrick frowned.

“How?””

“By making everyone afraid of losing everything.””

Shawn looked at Cody.

“He knew Cody was the key.””

“Why?””

“Because I transferred ownership.””

Jillian already knew.

“But not money.””

“No.””

Shawn looked at his son.

“Power.””

Cody shook his head.

“I don’t want it.””

A sad smile appeared on Shawn’s face.

“That’s why I chose you.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Jillian asked:

“How did you survive?””

Shawn looked at Emmett.

“Because he helped me.””

Patrick turned.

“You knew?””

Emmett nodded.

“I helped Shawn disappear.””

Patrick looked betrayed.

“You let me mourn him.””

“I let you survive.””

The words stopped him.

Emmett continued.

“If Malcolm knew Shawn was alive, he would have killed everyone connected to him.””

Jillian looked at Shawn.

“Then why come back now?””

Shawn’s expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Because Malcolm found the final piece.””

“What piece?””

Shawn looked at Cody’s backpack.

“The map.””

Everyone became still.

Cody pulled out the index card.

“This?””

Shawn nodded.

“Your drawings.””

Cody looked confused.

“My drawings?””

“You were never just drawing people.””

Shawn looked at the card.

“You were copying locations.””

Jillian stared.

“What?””

Cody frowned.

“I don’t understand.””

Shawn pointed to the card.

“Your mother was an artist.””

Jillian froze.

“What?””

“Laura knew things.””

The name hit Cody.

His biological mother.

Shawn continued.

“She created a system to hide information.””

Cody looked at the drawing.

“The symbols.””

“Yes.””

Jillian felt overwhelmed.

“Cody inherited this from his mother?””

Shawn nodded.

“Not from the Bannons.””

A pause.

“From Laura.””

Suddenly, every drawing Cody had ever made had a different meaning.

Every stranger.

Every building.

Every small detail.

Maybe they were not random.

Maybe Cody had been preserving secrets without knowing.

Then Shawn’s phone rang.

Everyone looked at him.

He answered.

A few seconds passed.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

He listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

“What happened?””

Shawn looked at Cody.

“Malcolm has Laura’s old studio.””

Jillian felt cold.

“Why?””

Shawn looked toward the window.

“Because he knows where the last secret is hidden.””

“What secret?””

May you like

Shawn’s answer was barely a whisper.

“The one that proves Malcolm killed his own brother.””
