Chapter 8: The Son Who Came Back From the Dead

Richard couldn't speak.

He stood on the porch, rain soaking his expensive coat, staring at the son he had buried five years earlier.

Andrew looked older than his photographs. There were faint lines beneath his eyes, and his left hand trembled as he held the door open.

Richard finally managed two words.

“You're alive.””

Andrew swallowed.

“Yes.””

Richard reached for him again.

This time, Andrew didn't move away.

His father pulled him into an embrace so fierce that Andrew's face disappeared against his shoulder. Richard began crying openly, clutching the back of his son's sweater as though letting go might make him disappear again.

“I buried you,” Richard whispered.

“I stood beside an empty coffin because your mother told me there was nothing left to recover.””

Andrew closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“Why didn't you call me?””

“I tried.””

Richard pulled back.

“What?””

Andrew looked toward Thomas.

“He'll tell you what happened at the airfield. But first, everyone needs to come inside.””

He glanced at Vanessa again.

“And Daniel needs to know the truth about his marriage.””

Daniel stiffened.

“What does my marriage have to do with your disappearance?””

Andrew stepped aside.

“Everything.””

The house smelled of coffee and old books. A small fire burned in the living room, and photographs covered one wall. Richard stopped when he noticed them.

There were pictures of Andrew as a child, photographs of him at university, and one image of a little boy standing beside a lake.

Richard picked it up.

“Who's this?””

Andrew closed the door.

“My son.””

Vanessa's knees nearly buckled.

“No,” she whispered.

Andrew faced her.

“His name is Noah.””

She covered her mouth.

“He's alive?””

“Yes.””

Tears streamed down her face.

Andrew's expression softened, but only slightly.

“He's seven years old. He's safe. And he has never been told the full story of what happened before he was born.””

Vanessa reached toward the photograph.

Andrew held it close to his chest.

“Don't.””

She froze.

“I only wanted to see him.””

“You had five years to tell the truth.””

“I believed he was dead.””

Andrew's jaw tightened.

“You believed what Eleanor told you because it was easier than questioning the people who were paying you.””

Vanessa lowered her head.

Daniel stood beside the fireplace, staring at the family photographs.

“Andrew, I need you to explain something. You were alive when Vanessa and I got married. You knew she was pregnant. Why didn't you come back?””

Andrew sat down slowly.

“Because Victor threatened to destroy everyone I loved.””

Richard's face hardened.

“Tell us exactly what happened.””

Andrew rubbed his left temple, touching the scar.

“Three days before my reported death, I discovered that Victor and Eleanor had been moving money through companies connected to the proposed merger. The payments were disguised as consulting fees, but some of the money came from accounts controlled by Bennett Holdings.””

Richard stared at him.

“My company?””

“Not from accounts you personally controlled. The transfers were authorized through a subsidiary Eleanor managed.””

Richard sat down.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“I tried. I sent you documents, but every message disappeared. When I called your office, someone said you were traveling. When I went to your house, Eleanor told me you refused to see me.””

Richard looked devastated.

“I never received anything.””

“I know that now.””

Andrew glanced toward the window.

“Then Victor discovered what I had found. He arranged a meeting at the airfield and told me that if I wanted Vanessa and the baby to remain safe, I had to disappear.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You agreed to fake your death?””

“I agreed to leave the country. I didn't know they would announce that I had died.””

Thomas lowered his head.

“Mr. Cole told everyone that your car had gone off the road during the storm.””

Andrew nodded.

“My car was found near the river. But I wasn't in it.””

Richard covered his face.

“And Eleanor let me mourn you.””

“She told me you were too ill to be involved. She said the scandal would destroy you.””

Richard's voice broke.

“She stole five years from us.””

Andrew looked at him sadly.

“She stole five years from all of us.””

Vanessa approached him.

“Andrew, I need you to know that I never stopped loving you.””

He stared at her.

“You married Daniel.””

“Because I thought you were dead.””

“You accepted the money.””

“Because I thought I had no choice.””

Andrew stood abruptly.

“You always had a choice, Vanessa. You could have refused the agreement. You could have told Daniel the truth. You could have questioned Eleanor when she told you I was dead.””

She began crying harder.

“I was afraid.””

“So was I.””

His voice cracked.

“I woke up in a clinic with a broken skull and no identification. I spent months recovering under another name because Victor's people were looking for me. I didn't know whether my father believed I was dead or whether he had helped arrange it.””

Richard rose.

“I never helped them. I swear to you.””

Andrew stared at him.

“I believe you now.””

Daniel looked from Andrew to Vanessa.

“Why did you agree to marry me?””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“Eleanor told me you were a good man. She said marrying you would protect me from scandal and give the baby a secure future. Victor offered my family financial support. I thought I could build a life with you.””

“And when you realized you couldn't love me the way you loved Andrew?””

“I tried.””

Daniel gave a bitter laugh.

“You didn't try to love me. You tried to become comfortable with the lie.””

Vanessa had no answer.

Andrew walked to a cabinet and removed a thick envelope.

Inside were bank statements, printed emails, and copies of contracts.

“I kept these documents because I knew one day the truth would matter.””

He handed the envelope to Richard.

Richard scanned the first page.

His expression changed.

“These payments continued after your disappearance.””

“Yes.””

“And some of them went to Marcus Hale.””

Andrew nodded.

“Marcus wasn't merely selling information. He was helping Victor move money out of the companies before the merger was finalized.””

Daniel took a statement from the envelope.

“My company's financial projections are here.””

“They were stolen,” Andrew said.

“And the information was used to sabotage your coastal development bid.””

Daniel looked sick.

“Was Vanessa involved?””

Andrew hesitated.

“She met Marcus. She accepted money. But I don't believe she knew the full purpose of the operation.””

Vanessa lifted her head.

“You believe me?””

Andrew looked at her with sadness.

“I believe you were manipulated. That doesn't mean you weren't responsible for your choices.””

Richard turned another page.

Then he stopped.

“Andrew, there's a transfer here dated six months ago. The beneficiary is a private trust registered in Noah's name.””

Andrew's expression changed.

“That account was supposed to be frozen.””

“Who authorized the payment?””

Andrew leaned over the document.

His eyes widened.

“Eleanor.””

Richard stared at the signature.

“Why would she send money to your son?””

Andrew shook his head.

“I don't know.””

I stepped closer to examine the paperwork.

The trust had been established before Andrew's reported death, but the most recent transfer carried a note in the reference field.

*FINAL PAYMENT — RELEASE OF ORIGINAL AGREEMENT.*

Daniel read it aloud.

“Release of original agreement?””

Andrew looked at Vanessa.

Her face had gone white.

“Vanessa,” he said quietly, “what did you sign after marrying Daniel?””

She backed away.

“Nothing.””

Andrew placed another document on the table.

It was dated three months after the wedding.

At the bottom was Vanessa's signature.

Daniel picked it up.

He read the first paragraph.

Then he looked at his wife with horror.

“You didn't just marry me because of an agreement.””

May you like

He turned the page.

“You signed away your rights to Andrew's child.””
