Chapter 4: The Child Nobody Knew About
“Because she was already pregnant.””
Victor's recorded words echoed through the dining room.
Daniel didn't move.
He stood beside the table, staring at the tablet as if the screen had become a window into a life he had never truly lived.
Vanessa sat frozen in her chair. Her fingers clutched the edge of the table, and the diamonds on her wedding ring caught the candlelight.
Richard slowly lowered himself into the nearest chair.
“Victor,” he whispered, “tell me that recording has been edited.””
Victor reached for the tablet.
I moved it out of his reach.
“Don't,” I said.
His eyes narrowed.
“This is a private family matter, Ethan.””
“Then perhaps you should have kept it out of my restaurant's private dining room.””
Olivia stopped the recording, but the damage was already done.
Daniel turned toward his wife.
“Were you pregnant when we got married?””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
No words came out.
“Answer me!””
“Yes,” she whispered.
Daniel staggered backward.
For a moment, I thought he might fall. He caught the back of a chair and gripped it until his knuckles turned white.
“How long did you know?””
“Daniel, please sit down.””
“How long?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Six weeks.””
He laughed bitterly.
“Six weeks. You knew you were pregnant six weeks before you married me, and you never told me?””
“I was scared.””
“Of what? That I wouldn't marry you?””
She looked at Victor.
That single glance told Daniel more than any confession could have.
He turned toward his father.
“Was the baby mine?””
Victor's face tightened.
“Son, the circumstances were complicated.””
Daniel slammed his hand against the table.
“Was the baby mine?””
Vanessa began sobbing.
“No.””
The word fell between them like a stone.
Daniel stared at her.
Then he looked at the marriage agreement again.
“Whose child was it?””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Richard leaned forward, his expression hardening.
“Vanessa, if there is something else in that recording, you need to tell us now.””
She shook her head desperately.
“I can't.””
“You've already destroyed your husband's trust,” Richard said.
“Whatever you're protecting cannot possibly be worse than what you've done.””
Vanessa looked at him with desperate eyes.
“You don't understand what Eleanor did.””
Richard went still.
“What did my wife do?””
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
“She found out about the pregnancy before Daniel and I were even engaged. I was dating someone else at the time. Someone whose family would never have accepted me.””
Daniel's voice became cold.
“You mean someone you loved.””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Before she could answer, Victor interrupted.
“That part of the story is irrelevant.””
Daniel turned on him.
“You don't get to decide what's relevant to my life anymore.””
Victor's face reddened.
“I was trying to protect the family.””
“You keep saying that. What exactly were you protecting?””
Victor's jaw tightened.
“The company. Your future. Everything I spent forty years building.””
“And my marriage?””
Victor looked away.
That was when Vanessa finally spoke.
“The man I was dating was connected to a rival business group. Eleanor discovered our relationship and realized that my pregnancy could become a scandal. She offered to help me disappear from his life and start over.””
Daniel stared at her.
“By marrying me?””
“She said you were kind. She said you wanted a family. She told me you would be a good husband.””
“Did she tell you to pretend the baby was mine?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No. The agreement was signed before that decision was finalized. Victor said the pregnancy could be handled privately.””
Daniel looked at his father with open disgust.
“You knew?””
Victor didn't answer.
“You knew I might be raising another man's child, and you let me believe everything was normal?””
“I thought the child would be yours in every way that mattered.””
Daniel stepped away from him.
“Don't ever tell me what matters to me again.””
The dining room had fallen nearly silent. Olivia had moved the remaining guests away from the private section, but the staff could still hear the argument.
I glanced at Richard.
He looked devastated, but there was anger beneath it now.
“Vanessa,” he said, “you mentioned Eleanor helping you disappear from the child's father. What does that have to do with the corporate payments?””
She looked down at her hands.
“Nothing. Not directly.””
“Then why are you afraid of her?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“Because she has the original medical records. She has documents proving who the father is. And she has a letter he wrote me before the wedding.””
Daniel's face hardened.
“What letter?””
“He wanted me to leave with him. He said he would take responsibility for the baby.””
“Then why didn't you?””
Vanessa's voice broke.
“Because Eleanor told me he had died.””
Richard slowly lifted his head.
“What?””
“She showed me an accident report. She said his car had gone off a bridge during a storm. She told me there was nothing I could do.””
Daniel stared at her.
“And you believed her?””
“I was twenty-six, pregnant, and terrified. I had no money. Victor offered security. Eleanor promised I could give the baby a stable life.””
“You gave me a lie instead.””
Vanessa began crying harder.
Daniel turned away.
Then Olivia looked down at the tablet.
“Ethan, there's another file attached to this recording.””
I stepped beside her.
“What kind of file?””
“A scanned letter. It was saved under the same date as the meeting.””
She opened it.
The letter was addressed to Vanessa.
The signature at the bottom was unfamiliar to me, but Richard recognized it immediately.
His lips parted.
“That's impossible.””
I looked at him.
“Who wrote it?””
Richard stared at the name.
Then he looked at Vanessa, whose face had gone completely white.
“It's the man she was dating,” he whispered.
Daniel slowly turned back toward the screen.
“What's his name?””
Richard's voice trembled.
“Andrew Bennett.””
The room seemed to tilt.
May you like
Because Andrew Bennett had been Richard's only son.
And according to the official records, he had been dead for five years.
