Chapter 6: The Witness Who Saw Him Alive

Victor Cole reached for his briefcase.

I noticed immediately.

So did Daniel.

“Where are you going?”” Daniel asked.

Victor snapped the case shut.

“Home.””

“No, you're not.””

Victor glared at his son.

“You have no authority to detain me.””

“I'm not detaining you. I'm asking you to stay until we understand why your former driver claims to have seen Andrew Bennett alive after his reported death.””

Victor's eyes flicked toward Richard.

“That man is a liar.””

Richard held up his phone.

“You haven't even heard what he said.””

“I know the kind of man he is.””

“Then you should have no problem explaining why his statement disappeared from the police file.””

Victor's jaw tightened.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Victor looked at me.

“Ethan, you're a businessman. You understand that certain disputes should be handled privately.””

I glanced at the marriage agreement on the table.

“I understand that people who ask for privacy often mean they don't want anyone checking their records.””

His face darkened.

“You're making a serious mistake.””

“No,” I replied.

“I'm making sure my employees don't accidentally destroy evidence that could be relevant to a criminal investigation.””

Olivia appeared beside me with a small folder.

“I've documented the time the footage was discovered, the file names, and every person who has viewed the recordings. The originals are backed up on our secure server.””

Victor looked at her as though he had never considered that a waitress could understand the importance of evidence.

“Who authorized you to do that?””

I answered for her.

“I did.””

He said nothing.

Richard moved toward the entrance, phone pressed to his ear.

“Please ask the witness to come here,” he told his attorney.

“If he's willing, I'd like to hear his account directly.””

Daniel watched his father.

“Did you know Andrew?””

Victor adjusted his collar.

“Barely.””

“That's strange. Your driver apparently knew him well enough to recognize him after his supposed death.””

“People recognize people. It proves nothing.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“Then tell me what happened to the baby.””

Victor's expression changed.

“What baby?””

Vanessa began crying again.

Daniel's voice rose.

“You knew she was pregnant. You knew I might be raising another man's child. You signed an agreement about my marriage. Don't stand there and pretend you know nothing.””

Victor looked at Vanessa.

She shook her head desperately.

“Don't,” she whispered.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Don't what? Tell the truth?””

Victor exhaled sharply.

“The pregnancy was never the primary concern.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Eleanor and I had more important matters to resolve.””

Richard's eyes narrowed.

“Such as?””

Victor looked toward the windows.

“The merger.””

Richard laughed in disbelief.

“You arranged a marriage to influence a merger?””

“I arranged a relationship that would make the merger more stable.””

“You paid a woman to marry Daniel!””

“I ensured the families had a common interest.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You keep talking about me like I'm a piece of property.””

Victor's voice hardened.

“Everything you have came from decisions I made. Your education, your company, your opportunities. You think you built your success alone?””

“I built my company with my own hands.””

“With capital you received through family connections.””

“Capital I repaid.””

“And connections I provided!””

Daniel stepped back, his face twisted with disgust.

“You never wanted a son. You wanted an employee who couldn't resign.””

Victor opened his mouth, but no words came.

For the first time, I saw Daniel clearly. Beneath his arrogance was a man who had spent years trying to earn approval from someone who treated affection like a reward.

It didn't excuse how he had treated me.

But it explained why he had been so eager to believe that money made him untouchable.

Richard returned from the entrance.

“The witness is on his way.””

Victor immediately shook his head.

“This is ridiculous. You're allowing a disgruntled former employee to dictate the future of both our families.””

Richard looked at him coldly.

“Then stay and prove him wrong.””

Victor had no answer.

While we waited, Olivia brought fresh coffee for those who wanted it. Nobody touched the cups.

Vanessa sat apart from Daniel, her wedding ring resting on the table between them.

Finally, she spoke.

“Daniel, there's something else you should know.””

He didn't look at her.

“I'm listening.””

“When Eleanor told me Andrew had died, she said his family would never accept me. She said he had left debts, and that the only way to protect my baby was to accept Victor's arrangement.””

Richard turned toward her.

“My son had no debts.””

“I know that now.””

“Did you ever see Andrew after the accident?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“No.””

“Did you attend his funeral?””

“No.””

“Did you see his body?””

She shook her head.

Richard closed his eyes.

He had spent five years mourning a son whose death he might never have understood.

Then the restaurant doors opened.

An older man in a dark jacket entered, holding a worn leather folder. He had gray hair, tired eyes, and the cautious posture of someone who expected trouble wherever he went.

Richard approached him.

“Mr. Harris?””

The man nodded.

“Richard Bennett?””

“Yes.””

They shook hands.

Victor stepped forward.

“Thomas, I don't know why you've come here, but whatever you've told these people is a misunderstanding.””

Thomas Harris looked at him.

“Good evening, Mr. Cole.””

His voice was calm, but his hands trembled around the folder.

Daniel pulled out a chair.

“Please sit down.””

Thomas did, placing the folder on the table.

“I drove for the Cole family for eleven years,” he began.

“I wasn't involved in their business decisions. I drove people where they needed to go, kept my mouth shut, and collected my salary.””

Victor folded his arms.

“Then you should have nothing to say about this.””

Thomas ignored him.

“Five years ago, Mr. Cole asked me to drive him to a private airfield outside the city. He told me we were meeting a business associate.””

Richard leaned forward.

“What happened?””

“When we arrived, a young man was waiting beside a black car. He had a bruised face and a bandage around his left hand.””

Richard's breathing changed.

“Was it Andrew?””

Thomas nodded.

“I recognized him from photographs. He was supposed to be dead by then.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Daniel stared at Victor.

“You knew Andrew was alive?””

Victor's silence was answer enough.

Thomas continued.

“Mr. Cole gave Andrew an envelope and told him to leave the country. Andrew refused. He said he wasn't leaving Vanessa or his child behind.””

Vanessa began sobbing.

Thomas opened the folder and removed a handwritten statement.

“That's when Mr. Cole told him that if he returned, Vanessa would lose the child, and the Bennett family would lose everything.””

Richard rose so abruptly that his chair fell backward.

“You threatened my son?””

Victor shouted, “He's lying!””

Thomas flinched but continued.

“Andrew looked at me before he left. He said, 'If anything happens to me, tell my father I didn't abandon him.''”

Richard pressed both hands against the table.

“What happened after that?””

Thomas's eyes filled with tears.

“I drove Mr. Cole back to the city. Two days later, he told me Andrew had died in an accident and warned me never to speak about the airfield.””

Daniel turned toward his father.

“Was the accident real?””

Victor looked around the room.

His eyes settled on the marriage agreement, then the photograph of Vanessa with Marcus Hale.

Finally, he spoke.

“Andrew was alive when I last saw him.””

Richard made a broken sound.

“And you let me bury my son?””

Victor's face hardened.

“I was protecting the merger.””

Richard lunged forward, but Daniel caught his arm.

“Richard, don't. Let him talk.””

Victor looked at his son, breathing heavily.

“Andrew was determined to expose the arrangement. He had documents proving that Eleanor and I had used company funds to finance the agreement. If those records became public, both families would have faced investigations.””

“So you made him disappear?”” Daniel asked.

Victor said nothing.

Thomas opened the folder again.

“There is one more thing.””

He removed a photograph taken at the airfield.

It showed Andrew standing beside a small aircraft, alive and looking directly at the camera.

On the back, someone had written a date and an address.

Richard took the photograph with shaking hands.

“Where did you get this?””

“Andrew gave it to me before he left. He said if he couldn't contact his father within six months, I should deliver it.””

“Why didn't you?””

Thomas lowered his eyes.

“Because Mr. Cole threatened my family. I was afraid.””

Richard stared at the photograph.

Then he turned it over and read the address aloud.

It was a residential property outside Atlanta.

Daniel frowned.

“Who lives there?””

Thomas looked toward Vanessa.

“I don't know who lives there now. But Andrew told me it was where he planned to go after leaving the country.””

Vanessa stood so quickly that her chair scraped across the floor.

“That address,” she whispered.

Everyone turned toward her.

Daniel's voice was sharp.

“What about it?””

She stared at the photograph, trembling.

“I've seen it before.””

Richard stepped closer.

“Where?””

Vanessa looked at him, tears running down her face.

“On a birthday card that arrived at my house three years ago. There was no return address. I thought it was a cruel joke.””

She swallowed hard.

“Inside was a single sentence.””

Daniel asked, “What did it say?””

Vanessa's voice broke.

“Tell our son his father never stopped looking for him.””

The room went silent.

Richard gripped the table.

“Our son?””

Vanessa nodded, unable to speak.

Then Daniel looked at her with horror.

“You told me the baby died.””

“I believed he had.””

Richard stared at the address again.

May you like

And Thomas Harris whispered the words that changed everything.

“Mr. Bennett, if that message was genuine, Andrew may not have been the only person who survived that night.””
