Chapter 14: The Last Deal Victor Cole Ever Made

The flash drive sat on my desk like a loaded weapon.

Eleanor refused to let anyone copy it until her attorney arrived. Richard insisted that the original remain untouched, while Daniel contacted his company's legal department to arrange a secure evidence transfer.

For once, nobody argued about money.

We were all thinking about the same thing.

What had Victor done to protect his secret?

At ten the next morning, we gathered in a conference room at my restaurant. My attorney, Richard's counsel, and an independent forensic examiner were present.

The examiner connected the flash drive to an isolated computer.

A folder appeared.

Inside were bank statements, trust documents, scanned contracts, and several audio recordings.

The first recording was dated five years earlier.

Victor's voice filled the room.

“Thomas Carter must never regain control of the trust. If he discovers what Michael signed, the entire arrangement collapses.””

Another voice answered.

Eleanor.

“What about Ethan?””

Victor replied without hesitation.

“He's a child. He'll inherit nothing if we remove Thomas as trustee and classify Michael's estate as abandoned.””

Richard closed his eyes.

Eleanor began crying.

The recording continued.

“What if Michael comes back?”” she asked.

“He won't.””

“You can't know that.””

Victor laughed.

“I know exactly what I arranged.””

The room went silent.

My attorney paused the recording.

“That statement is significant, but we need the surrounding context before drawing conclusions.””

I nodded.

“Continue.””

The next file contained a conversation between Victor and Marcus Hale.

Marcus was discussing the confidential proposal stolen from Daniel's company.

Victor wanted the information used to undermine the competing development bid. In exchange, Marcus would receive a consulting payment, while a portion would be transferred to Vanessa's account.

Daniel stared at the screen.

“My company was deliberately sabotaged.””

“Yes,” Richard replied.

“And the evidence suggests your father used the stolen information to influence the merger negotiations.””

Daniel shook his head.

“He told me the project failed because the market had changed.””

Eleanor wiped her eyes.

“He told me the same thing.””

Andrew looked at her.

“And you still helped him.””

She lowered her head.

“Yes.””

The forensic examiner opened another file.

This recording was shorter.

Victor spoke first.

“If Andrew returns, the trust will have to be reopened. Michael's estate will become a legal issue, and the Carter boy will be entitled to a share.””

Marcus asked, “What do you want me to do?””

“Make sure neither of them can challenge the transfer.””

“How?””

Victor's answer was chilling.

“Find something they can be accused of. Money, fraud, anything. If they become legal liabilities, nobody will believe their claims.””

I felt my hands curl into fists.

Victor hadn't merely stolen money.

He had planned to discredit anyone who could expose him.

Richard looked at Eleanor.

“Did you know about this recording?””

“No,” she whispered.

“I knew Victor was trying to control the trust, but I didn't know he had instructed Marcus to target Andrew and Ethan.””

My attorney leaned forward.

“The recordings and financial records need to be submitted to investigators. They may support charges involving fraud, forgery, and corporate misconduct.””

Andrew nodded.

“There's still the question of Michael's death.””

The examiner opened the final audio file.

It began with the sound of a car engine.

Then Victor's voice came through.

“Michael, you have until midnight to sign the transfer.””

A second man answered.

“You're not getting the shares.””

“Then you'll lose everything.””

Michael's voice was steady.

“You can take the money. You can threaten me. But you'll never make me sign away my son's future.””

There was a scuffle.

A door slammed.

Then the recording ended.

Richard stared at the screen.

“Was that the night of the accident?””

Eleanor nodded faintly.

“I believe so.””

Andrew's jaw tightened.

“My brother refused to cooperate, and Victor made him disappear.””

“We cannot establish exactly what happened from this recording alone,” my attorney cautioned.

“But it gives investigators a clear line of inquiry.””

Daniel looked at Eleanor.

“Who recorded it?””

She hesitated.

“Michael.””

Richard frowned.

“How?””

“He had a small recorder in his jacket. He was documenting his meetings because he suspected Victor was trying to force him into signing the trust transfer.””

I looked at the files again.

“Then why did Victor keep the recording?””

Eleanor answered quietly.

“Because he believed it proved Michael had voluntarily negotiated the transfer. He never expected anyone to recover the complete file.””

Andrew shook his head.

“He underestimated Michael.””

“And Thomas,” I added.

Richard turned toward me.

“Thomas?””

I thought of the letter my aunt had read and the forged signature on the trust amendment.

“Thomas spent years protecting me without telling me why. He must have known Victor could come after our family.””

My attorney nodded.

“The original trust records, combined with the evidence of forgery, may allow the estate to recover its assets. But we'll need to establish the legal relationship between Michael, Ethan, and Thomas.””

“I'll provide every document my aunt has,” I said.

Richard placed a hand on my shoulder.

“We'll make sure your father's wishes are respected.””

I looked at him.

“Both fathers.””

He understood.

Thomas Carter had raised me. Michael Bennett had tried to secure my future. Neither man's contribution would be erased.

Daniel stood and approached me.

“Ethan, there's something I need to do.””

He removed a folder from his briefcase and placed it on the table.

Inside were documents terminating Cole Meridian Group's participation in the expansion negotiations.

“I can't continue doing business through a company that my father used to manipulate people. I'm stepping away from the contract until the investigation is complete.””

I examined the documents.

“You don't need to sacrifice your career to prove a point.””

“I'm not. I'm protecting my employees from being dragged into something they didn't know about.””

He paused.

“And I'm apologizing again for the way I treated you.””

I extended my hand.

“Start by treating people properly when nobody important is watching.””

He shook it.

“I will.””

Across the room, Vanessa sat with her attorney. She had agreed to cooperate with investigators and disclose every communication she had received from Marcus and Eleanor.

Her marriage to Daniel was over, but the legal consequences were only beginning.

Richard's phone rang.

He listened for a few seconds, then stood.

“The police have located Victor.””

Andrew's face tightened.

“Where?””

“At a private airport outside Atlanta. He was preparing to leave the country.””

Daniel swore under his breath.

“Did they arrest him?””

“Not yet. They're questioning him about the financial records.””

Richard ended the call.

Then his phone rang again.

This time, the caller was an unknown number.

He answered cautiously.

“Richard Bennett.””

A man's voice came through.

“Mr. Bennett, my name is Special Agent Lewis. We've located a vehicle connected to the accident that supposedly killed Michael Bennett.””

Richard gripped the phone.

“Where?””

“An abandoned storage facility outside the city. There's evidence suggesting the vehicle was moved after the original investigation.””

Andrew rose.

“Did you find Michael's belongings?””

The agent paused.

“We found something more significant.””

Richard's face went pale.

“What?””

“The vehicle's original registration documents. They identify Victor Cole as the owner.””

Andrew closed his eyes.

Then the agent continued.

“And Mr. Bennett, we also recovered a sealed envelope hidden beneath the driver's seat.””

Richard's voice trembled.

“What's inside?””

“A handwritten statement from Michael. It names the person who helped Victor arrange the false death report.””

Everyone turned toward Eleanor.

She looked as though she might faint.

The agent read the name aloud.

“Eleanor Bennett.””

Richard slowly lowered the phone.

His wife covered her face.

“I can explain,” she whispered.

But Richard stepped away from her.

“No,” he said quietly.

“You've had five years to explain.””

Then he looked at Andrew.

“Your brother's death may finally be investigated properly.””

Andrew nodded, tears filling his eyes.

But before anyone could speak, my attorney received an urgent message.

He read it twice.

Then he looked at me.

“Ethan, the authorities have discovered something else in the storage facility.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

“The original trust documents were hidden inside the vehicle.””

My heart began pounding.

“And?””

May you like

He looked directly at me.

“The trust names you as the sole surviving beneficiary of Michael Bennett's estate.””
