Chapter 11: The Fortune Hidden in a Dead Man's Name

By the time we returned to Andrew's house, the family secret had become a financial crisis.

Richard sat at the kitchen table, studying the corporate records I had downloaded. Daniel paced beside the fireplace. Andrew stood near the window, looking out at the dark road.

Eleanor sat alone on the sofa, her hands clasped tightly in her lap.

Nobody had invited her to stay.

She had insisted that leaving before she finished explaining would only make matters worse.

I placed the ownership documents in front of Richard.

“Northstar Legacy Holdings owns thirty-eight percent of the company behind the regional development project,” I explained.

“The shares are held through a trust, but the public filings don't identify the ultimate beneficiary.””

Richard scanned the documents.

“If Michael was the beneficiary, Victor had no right to collect the dividends.””

“Correct,” I said.

“But we'll need the original trust records to establish that.””

Daniel stopped pacing.

“How much money are we talking about?””

I checked the dividend statements.

“Approximately twelve million dollars over five years, based on the distributions recorded here. That doesn't include any shares Victor may have sold or transferred.””

Richard stared at the figure.

“Twelve million.””

Eleanor lowered her head.

“Victor told me the money belonged to the family.””

“What family?”” Richard demanded.

“Michael's? Andrew's? Yours?””

She didn't answer.

Andrew turned toward her.

“Did you know Victor was collecting the dividends?””

“Yes.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I was afraid he would expose the documents connecting me to the marriage agreement.””

Andrew laughed bitterly.

“So you protected yourself while he stole money from my brother's estate.””

“I told myself I could recover it later.””

“Later never came, did it?””

Eleanor began crying.

“No.””

Daniel leaned against the mantel.

“I need to ask something. If Michael's shares were worth that much, why did Victor need to manipulate my marriage?””

Richard answered before Eleanor could.

“Because the merger would have given Victor access to the remaining assets. He needed Daniel's company to secure financing, and he needed my family to approve the transaction.””

I nodded.

“And the confidential proposal Vanessa gave Marcus Hale could have helped him sabotage the competing bids.””

Daniel looked sick.

“My company was being used to move money that never belonged to my father.””

“Possibly,” I said.

“We need to distinguish what the records prove from what we're still investigating.””

Andrew approached the table.

“What happens if the trust records confirm Michael was the rightful owner?””

“The estate could have a claim to the shares and unpaid dividends,” I replied.

“But we need a lawyer to review the trust, the transfer documents, and the circumstances of Michael's death.””

Richard nodded.

“I'll arrange that immediately.””

Eleanor suddenly stood.

“There's another problem.””

Everyone turned toward her.

“Victor knows the original documents exist. He kept a copy of the trust agreement in his private office. If he believes we're trying to recover the shares, he'll destroy it.””

Daniel pulled out his phone.

“Then we call the authorities.””

“He'll have already moved the files.””

Richard stared at her.

“Why would he keep the original if he intended to steal the money?””

“Because he needed proof that the shares were transferred legally. The transfer itself wasn't forged. Michael signed it before his death, believing Victor was arranging a temporary management agreement.””

Andrew's face hardened.

“And Victor turned it into permanent control.””

Eleanor nodded.

“Michael trusted him.””

Richard leaned back.

“My son trusted him, too.””

Silence filled the room.

Then my phone rang.

Olivia.

I answered immediately.

“What's wrong?””

“Ethan, two men came to the restaurant asking for the security footage,” she said.

“They claimed to represent Victor's legal team.””

“Did you give them anything?””

“No. I told them they needed a formal request. One of them became aggressive and tried to enter the office.””

My jaw tightened.

“Are you safe?””

“Yes. Security escorted them outside. But before they left, one of them told me you should stop interfering in the Cole family's affairs.””

Richard overheard.

“Have your attorney notify the police about the attempted access,” he said.

I relayed his advice to Olivia.

After ending the call, I looked around the room.

“Victor is trying to retrieve the evidence before anyone can verify it.””

Daniel straightened.

“Then we need to get to his office first.””

Eleanor shook her head.

“You don't understand. Victor has a private archive in the basement of his house. The original trust agreement, the marriage contract, and the payment records are stored there.””

Richard stood.

“Then we'll obtain a warrant.””

“By the time you do, he'll have moved everything.””

Andrew studied her.

“Why are you telling us this now?””

Eleanor looked at him.

“Because I can't continue pretending that protecting Victor is the same as protecting my family.””

Andrew's expression remained cold.

“You should have realized that five years ago.””

“I know.””

She took a small key from her handbag and placed it on the table.

“It's for the archive room. The lock has been changed twice, but the key should still open the cabinet containing the old records.””

Daniel stared at it.

“You're giving us access to Victor's private files?””

“I'm giving you the chance to recover what he stole.””

Richard didn't touch the key.

“No. We're not breaking into anyone's house. If the documents exist, your attorney can obtain them legally.””

Eleanor looked defeated.

“I understand.””

But then Andrew noticed something written on the back of the key's tag.

A name.

*MICHAEL BENNETT — ORIGINAL BENEFICIARY.*

He picked it up.

“Why would Victor label a key with Michael's name?””

Eleanor went pale.

“Because that key doesn't open his archive room.””

Andrew looked at her.

“Then what does it open?””

She whispered, “A safe-deposit box.””

Richard frowned.

“Where?””

“An old bank in downtown Atlanta. Michael opened it shortly before he died. Victor has been paying the rental fees ever since.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Why would he keep paying for a box belonging to a dead man?””

Eleanor swallowed.

“Because he never found what was inside.””

Andrew closed his hand around the key.

“What did Michael hide?””

“I don't know,” she replied.

“But Victor once told me that if anyone ever opened that box, his entire life would be over.””

Richard rose immediately.

“We're going to the bank.””

I checked the time.

“It will be closed by now. We'll need to contact the bank in the morning and establish who has legal authority to access the box.””

Andrew nodded reluctantly.

“Then we'll be there when it opens.””

Eleanor looked toward him.

“Andrew, there's something you need to know about Michael.””

He stiffened.

“What?””

“Your mother didn't simply hide his existence from Richard. She also changed his surname when he was a child. Michael was registered under another family name.””

Richard frowned.

“Which name?””

Eleanor hesitated.

Then she whispered, “Michael Carter.””

I froze.

The surname struck me like a physical blow.

Carter.

My surname.

Richard turned toward me.

“Ethan, do you know anything about this?””

I shook my head slowly.

“My father died when I was young. He never told me about any connection to the Bennett family.””

Eleanor looked at me with growing horror.

“Then we need to find out who your father really was.””

She reached into her handbag and removed an old photograph.

It showed Michael standing beside a woman in front of a courthouse.

On the back, someone had written a date and a name.

My father's name.

And beneath it were six words that made my blood run cold.

*Michael Carter was Ethan's biological father.*
