Chapter 9: The Price Of Silence

For a few seconds, I couldn’t understand the words.

My brain heard them.

But refused to accept them.

“Your father paid me.””

Valerie’s voice was barely a whisper.

I stared at her.

“Paid you for what?””

She looked down.

“To stay.””

The room felt like it was spinning.

“You’re saying my father paid you to marry me?””

“No.””

“Then explain.””

Valerie sat down.

“I met your father before we got married.””

My heart sank.

“When?””

“Two months before our wedding.””

I took a step back.

“How?””

“He contacted me.””

“Why?””

She closed her eyes.

“Because he knew I was scared.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So he bought your silence?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Valerie looked at me.

“He offered money for Lily’s future.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He said if anything happened, if Lily needed medical care, therapy, anything… there would be money available.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It wasn’t only about money.””

“What was it about?””

Valerie’s voice cracked.

“He wanted control.””

I thought about my father.

The rules.

The expectations.

The way he always believed he knew best.

“What did he ask you to do?””

Valerie hesitated.

Then:

“He asked me not to tell you.””

“About the genetic condition?””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“So all these years…”

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“That if you found out, you would see me differently.””

I stared at her.

“And you thought hiding the truth was better?””

“No.””

Her tears fell.

“I thought I could pretend everything was normal.””

I looked away.

“Normal.””

That word again.

The word she used at the auditorium.

The word that made Lily feel like she wasn’t enough.

“Did you ever love her?””

Valerie looked up.

The question hurt her.

But I needed the answer.

“I did.””

“Then why did you try to erase her?””

She covered her face.

“Because every time I looked at Lily, I saw everything I was afraid of.””

I stood silently.

“I saw the future I didn’t know how to handle.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“And I hated myself for feeling that way.””

For a moment, I saw the person I married.

Not the person who hurt Lily.

The scared person underneath.

But fear didn’t excuse cruelty.

Especially not toward a child.

My phone rang.

Rebecca.

I answered.

“Daniel, I need you to come to my office.””

“Why?””

“Because I found something about Valerie’s custody filing.””

I looked at Valerie.

“What?””

Rebecca’s voice became serious.

“She wasn’t planning to just ask for custody.””

“What was she planning?””

A pause.

Then:

“She was planning to claim you were emotionally unstable.””

I frowned.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“She included statements from a psychologist.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Rebecca hesitated.

Then said:

“The same psychologist who evaluated Lily’s disability support needs.””

I looked at Valerie.

Her face changed.

“You know him?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“Valerie.””

She whispered:

“He helped me.””

“Helped you do what?””

She looked away.

“I didn’t know what he was going to write.””

I felt anger returning.

“You hired someone to evaluate our daughter.””

“No.””

“Then who?””

Before she could answer, my phone received an email.

From Rebecca.

One attachment.

One name.

I opened it.

The document showed the psychologist’s report.

And at the bottom was a signature.

Not the psychologist’s.

Not Valerie’s.

Someone else had approved it.

Someone with authority.

Someone whose name made my entire body go cold.

Because it was the same person who had signed Lily’s medical records years ago.

May you like

My father.

But my father was dead.
