Chapter 6: The Secret At The Hospital
The hospital hallway smelled exactly the same.
Antiseptic.
Coffee.
Fear.
Eight years ago, I had walked through these doors believing my life was beginning.
Now I was walking through them wondering if my entire marriage had been built on a lie.
Rebecca walked beside me.
“Daniel, are you sure you want to do this?””
I looked at the old maternity wing sign.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because someone left that message for a reason.””
We had spent the morning searching through old records.
The envelope had one clue.
Lily’s birth.
And after hours of questions, we discovered something strange.
The original birth records had been requested six months ago.
By Valerie.
Not by me.
Not by a doctor.
By my wife.
“What was she looking for?”” Rebecca asked.
“I don’t know.””
We reached the medical records office.
The woman behind the desk looked at the request.
“Are you Daniel Carter?””
“Yes.””
She studied my face.
Then lowered her voice.
“Your wife came here before.””
“When?””
“Six months ago.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did she ask for?””
The woman hesitated.
“Records related to Lily’s delivery.””
“Why?””
“She said there was a mistake.””
A mistake.
The word felt dangerous.
“What kind of mistake?””
The woman looked uncomfortable.
“I’m not allowed to discuss private medical details.””
Rebecca showed her legal authorization.
A few minutes later, we received a sealed file.
I opened it slowly.
The first pages were normal.
Birth information.
Doctor notes.
Delivery details.
Then I saw a handwritten note.
And I recognized the handwriting immediately.
Valerie’s.
My hands shook.
“What does it say?”” Rebecca asked.
I read it aloud.
“Confirm biological information.””
Rebecca looked confused.
“Biological information?””
I turned the page.
There was a test request.
A DNA test.
My heart dropped.
“No.””
Rebecca looked at me.
“Daniel?””
“She thought Lily wasn’t mine.””
The words sounded impossible.
After everything.
After eight years.
My own wife had been searching for proof that our daughter wasn’t my daughter.
Then my phone rang.
Valerie.
I answered.
“What did you do?””
Silence.
Then her voice.
“You found out.””
My grip tightened.
“You tested our daughter?””
“I needed the truth.””
“The truth?””
My voice cracked.
“You spent years watching me love her while secretly wondering if she was mine?””
Valerie became defensive.
“You don’t understand.””
“No. I understand perfectly.””
“Daniel—”
“Was she yours?””
The silence lasted too long.
That was the answer.
But then Valerie whispered:
“Yes.””
I froze.
“What?””
“She is yours.””
I closed my eyes.
“Then why?””
Her voice broke slightly.
“Because I was angry.””
“Angry?””
“At you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You tried to destroy my family because you were angry?””
“I felt invisible.””
“You made our daughter invisible.””
A pause.
Then Valerie said something that made my blood run cold.
“There’s something else you don’t know.””
I waited.
“Lily’s condition…”
My heart stopped.
“What about it?””
Valerie’s voice became softer.
“The doctor told me something after she was born.””
“What?””
“That her condition was caused by a genetic issue.””
I frowned.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying…”
She stopped.
Then whispered:
“Someone in your family knew this could happen.””
The line went silent.
I stared at Rebecca.
“What does that mean?””
Before Rebecca could answer, Valerie spoke again.
“And Daniel?””
“Yes?””
“The reason I wanted custody…”
Her voice trembled.
“It wasn’t because I hated Lily.””
I said nothing.
“It was because I found out who hid the truth from us.””
A cold chill moved through me.
“Who?””
Valerie whispered a name.
A name I knew.
A name from my own family.
Then the call ended.

And for the first time since this nightmare began…
I wondered if Valerie was the only person who had been lying to me.
