Chapter 7: The Name Hidden In The Records

The name Valerie whispered stayed in my mind all night.

My father.

Thomas Carter.

A man who had been gone from my life for five years.

A man who had always seemed impossible to understand.

When I was a child, my father was the kind of person everyone respected from a distance. Successful. Intelligent. Controlled.

But inside our home, he was different.

Cold.

Everything had rules.

Everything had expectations.

And when Lily was born, he was the first person who told me I needed to “be realistic.””

I remembered standing in the hospital room.

Lily was only two days old.

She was sleeping in Valerie’s arms while I stared at her tiny fingers.

My father stood near the window.

“She’s going to need a lot from you,” he said.

I smiled.

“She’s my daughter. That’s what parents do.””

He looked at me strangely.

“You don’t know what you’re saying.””

I had ignored it.

I thought he was just being my father.

Now I wondered if he knew something I didn’t.

The next morning, I drove to the old Carter family house.

I hadn’t been there since his funeral.

The grass was overgrown.

The windows were covered with dust.

It looked abandoned.

Just like the relationship we had left behind.

I unlocked the door with the key Rebecca had helped me obtain from the estate office.

Inside, everything smelled like old paper and memories.

I searched through his office first.

The same desk.

The same leather chair.

The same shelves filled with books he never let anyone touch.

I opened drawers.

Nothing.

I checked folders.

Nothing.

Then I noticed something strange.

One book on the shelf was slightly pulled forward.

Not enough for someone to notice.

Enough for someone hiding something.

I removed it.

Behind it was a small metal box.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside were documents.

Medical records.

Letters.

And one envelope with my name.

“Daniel.””

I sat down.

My father had written it.

I opened the letter.

Son,

If you are reading this, then the truth has finally reached you.

My heart started pounding.

I made a mistake years ago. A mistake I thought I could control.

I turned the page.

When Lily was born, the doctors suspected a genetic condition. They recommended testing both parents. Your results showed something unexpected.

I stopped.

The room felt smaller.

I kept reading.

The condition came from your side of the family.

I closed my eyes.

So Valerie wasn’t lying.

But there was more.

Your mother carried a genetic marker. I knew the risks existed. I chose not to tell you because I believed you would reject the idea of having a child with special needs.

My hands went cold.

“No.””

I said it out loud.

Because it couldn’t be true.

My father believed that about me?

He thought I would abandon my own daughter?

Then I saw the final paragraph.

I was wrong about you.

A tear fell onto the paper.

You became a better father than I ever was.

I sat there for a long time.

My father had spent years hiding the truth.

But even he eventually understood.

Then I found another document.

A hospital letter.

The date was six months ago.

The same time Valerie had requested Lily’s records.

I read the first sentence.

“Regarding the unauthorized disclosure of patient information…”

My heart jumped.

Unauthorized disclosure?

Someone had accessed Lily’s medical information.

Someone without permission.

Someone who wanted to use it.

I took photos of everything and called Rebecca.

She answered immediately.

“Did you find something?””

“Yes.””

I explained everything.

When I finished, she was quiet.

“Daniel?””

“Yes?””

“There’s something important you need to understand.””

“What?””

“If someone accessed Lily’s medical records six months ago, this may not just be a custody fight.””

I frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“Someone may have been collecting information for another reason.””

A chill moved through me.

Before I could respond, I heard footsteps outside the room.

Someone was in the house.

I stood.

“Rebecca, I have to call you back.””

I ended the call.

The footsteps moved closer.

Slow.

Confident.

Not someone who was lost.

I looked toward the doorway.

“Who’s there?””

No answer.

Then a voice spoke.

A voice I recognized.

“Daniel.””

My blood ran cold.

Because it wasn’t Valerie.

It wasn’t Michael.

It was someone I never expected to see again.

May you like

My older brother.

Ethan.
