Chapter 13: The Box With Lily’s Name

For a moment, I couldn’t hear anything.

Not the traffic outside.

Not Michael asking what happened.

Not even my own breathing.

All I could hear was the principal’s voice repeating the same sentence.

“The request came from your mother.””

I looked at Evelyn.

She immediately knew.

She saw it on my face.

“Daniel…”

I stepped back.

“No.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Please let me explain.””

“Explain what?””

My voice shook.

“Why you accessed Lily’s records without telling me?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence hurt more than an answer.

Michael moved closer.

“Evelyn, what did you do?””

She looked at him.

“I was trying to protect her.””

I laughed.

Everyone kept using those words.

Protect.

Help.

Understand.

But somehow, every secret left Lily more hurt.

“You don’t get to say that anymore.””

My mother looked broken.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

I held up my phone.

“Do you understand what she feels when adults keep deciding things about her life without asking?””

Evelyn looked toward the floor.

“I made mistakes.””

“Everyone did.””

I looked around the room.

“My father. Valerie. You.””

Then I looked at my mother.

“But Lily is the one who had to carry all of it.””

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Rebecca called.

I answered.

“Rebecca, my mother accessed Lily’s school records.””

There was a pause.

“Daniel, don’t accuse anyone until we know why.””

“I’m done waiting to know why.””

My voice became quieter.

“I need the truth.””

After ending the call, Evelyn reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small key.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

She looked away.

“I don’t know.””

That answer hurt.

“What is the key?””

She held it out.

“The safety deposit box.””

I stared at it.

“The one under Lily’s name?””

She nodded.

“Your father created it before Lily was born.””

“How?””

“He knew something was wrong with the way he was handling things.””

I took the key.

“What’s inside?””

Evelyn swallowed.

“Everything he was too afraid to tell you.””

An hour later, we were inside the bank.

The box was small.

Almost too small to hold something that had caused so much damage.

The employee left us alone.

I inserted the key.

Inside were three things.

A flash drive.

A sealed envelope.

And a small photograph.

I picked up the photo first.

It was taken the day Lily was born.

My father was standing beside the hospital bed.

But he wasn’t looking at the camera.

He was looking at Lily.

Not with disappointment.

Not with fear.

With love.

I had never seen that expression on his face before.

I opened the envelope.

Daniel,

If you are reading this, then I failed again.

I took a breath.

I spent my life believing I could control pain by controlling people.

My fingers tightened.

I tried to control you. I tried to control Valerie. I tried to control the future.

I continued.

But Lily taught me something I should have learned years earlier.

A tear formed in my eye.

People are not problems to solve.

I looked away.

Michael quietly said:

“He changed.””

I nodded.

But the damage remained.

I reached the final paragraph.

The person who continued my mistakes is not who you think.

My heartbeat increased.

They believe they are protecting the family.

I turned the page.

But they are protecting themselves.

Then:

Daniel, trust actions, not words.

I stared at the sentence.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Rebecca.

“Come to my office immediately. I found something about the school records.””

I looked at Evelyn.

“What did you access?””

She looked terrified.

“Daniel…”

“What did you see?””

Her lips trembled.

“The file wasn’t about Lily.””

I frowned.

“Then what?””

May you like

She looked at the flash drive.

“It was about you.””
