Chapter 8: The Brother Who Knew
Ethan stood in the doorway like he belonged there.
Like he had every right to walk into my father’s house while I uncovered secrets that had been buried for years.
I stared at him.
“What are you doing here?””
He looked at the papers in my hand.
“You found it.””
That sentence told me everything.
“You knew.””
Ethan didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“You knew.””
His face changed.
Not surprise.
Regret.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
“No.””
My voice echoed through the empty house.
“You don’t get to tell me to listen.””
He sighed.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I laughed.
“Protect me?””
I held up my father’s letter.
“You all knew.””
Ethan looked away.
“You knew Lily’s condition came from our family.””
“Yes.””
The answer was so calm that it made me angrier.
“And nobody told me?””
“It wasn’t that simple.””
“It was my daughter.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“You don’t know what it feels like to spend eight years wondering if you did enough. Wondering if you missed something. Wondering if you could have helped her more.””
Ethan lowered his head.
“I know.””
“Then why?””
He walked into the room.
“Because Dad was afraid.””
“Dad is dead.””
“I know.””
“And Mom?””
Ethan was silent.
That silence answered enough.
My entire family had known.
For years.
Ethan sat down.
“There was something else.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
“Dad didn’t just hide the genetic information.””
“What else did he do?””
Ethan looked at the floor.
“He changed the medical records.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“When the doctors suspected the condition, Dad paid for additional testing privately.””
“Why?””
“Because he wanted to know if the family history was responsible.””
“And?””
“He found out.””
I felt dizzy.
“So he knew.””
“Yes.””
“And he still said nothing?””
Ethan nodded.
“He thought if you knew, you’d blame yourself.””
I looked at him.
“I would never blame Lily.””
“I know that now.””
“Now?””
Ethan looked ashamed.
“Back then, we were all wrong about you.””
I turned away.
That sentence hurt more than anger.
Because it meant they had judged me before I even had the chance to prove them wrong.
My phone buzzed.
Rebecca.
I answered.
“Rebecca?””
Her voice was urgent.
“Daniel, where are you?””
“At my father’s house.””
“You need to leave.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“I found something.””
“What?””
“Valerie wasn’t only building a custody case.””
My stomach tightened.
“What else?””
“She was preparing a lawsuit.””
“Against who?””
There was a pause.
Then:
“Against your family.””
I looked at Ethan.
“What kind of lawsuit?””
“She planned to claim your family hid genetic information that caused Lily’s condition.””
I felt sick.
“But that’s not true.””
“No. But she didn’t know that.””
I looked at the documents.
Everything was connecting.
The DNA test.
The medical records.
The custody plan.
The house.
Valerie wasn’t just leaving.
She was building a case.
A case that could destroy everyone.
Then Ethan spoke quietly.
“Daniel.””
I turned.
“There’s one thing you need to know about Valerie.””
“What?””
“She didn’t discover the genetic issue six months ago.””
My face tightened.
“What are you saying?””
Ethan looked at me.
“She knew before Lily was born.””
The room went silent.
Impossible.
“She knew?””
He nodded.
“How?””
“Because she had the same conversation with Dad that I did.””
My hands went numb.
“No.””
“She knew there was a chance.””
“Then why did she marry me?””
Ethan looked away.
“That’s the question you need to ask her.””
I left the house immediately.
I drove straight to Valerie’s apartment.
I didn’t even knock.
I called her.
She opened the door moments later.
Her face changed when she saw my expression.
“You know.””
It wasn’t a question.
I stepped inside.
“You knew before Lily was born.””
Valerie said nothing.
“You knew there was a chance.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Tell me the truth.””
She looked broken.
And then she whispered:
“I didn’t know if I could handle it.””
I stared at her.
“Handle what?””
She wiped her tears.
“Being the mother of a child everyone would pity.””
The words cut deeper than I expected.
Then she said something even worse.
“But there was another reason I stayed.””
I froze.
“What reason?””
Valerie looked at me.
May you like
And I saw fear in her eyes.
“Because your father paid me.””
