Chapter 14: The Truth Valerie Tried To Hide

Rebecca’s office was already tense when we arrived.

She had papers spread across her desk.

Emails.

Medical records.

School documents.

Everything that had been used against me.

But now she wasn’t looking at me like a lawyer preparing a case.

She looked like someone who had discovered something impossible.

“Daniel, sit down.””

I didn’t.

“What did my mother find?””

Rebecca took a breath.

“She didn’t access Lily’s records.””

I looked at Evelyn.

“Then what did she access?””

“Your records.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“What records?””

“Your childhood records. School evaluations. Medical history.””

I felt confused.

“Why?””

Rebecca pushed a folder toward me.

“Because someone has been building a profile on you for years.””

I opened it.

Inside were copies of documents from when I was a child.

Reports.

Psychological evaluations.

Family notes.

I scanned the pages.

Then stopped.

A phrase jumped out.

“Difficulty expressing emotions.””

I looked at Rebecca.

“What is this?””

“Your father’s notes.””

I flipped through more pages.

My childhood.

My mistakes.

My fears.

Everything had been documented.

Then I saw a newer document.

A psychological assessment from two years ago.

About me.

Impossible.

“I never took this test.””

Rebecca nodded.

“Exactly.””

I stared at the signature.

Valerie.

“She used my information.””

“Yes.””

“For what?””

Rebecca looked at me.

“To create the image that you were emotionally unstable.””

I felt sick.

All these years, Valerie wasn’t just preparing to leave.

She was creating a version of me.

A version where I looked like the danger.

Then Michael spoke.

“Why would she need that?””

Rebecca looked at him.

“Because custody cases are easier when one parent appears unreliable.””

I closed my eyes.

The picture became clearer.

The family portrait.

The new house.

The documents.

The accusations.

She wasn’t removing Lily because she hated her.

She was building a life where Lily became proof that I was the problem.

My phone rang.

Valerie.

I almost ignored it.

But I answered.

“Why?””

Her voice was quiet.

“Daniel, I need to see you.””

“I don’t think there’s anything left to say.””

“There is.””

“What?””

A pause.

Then:

“I know who has been controlling everything.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

She hesitated.

“I was wrong about Michael.””

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

“He wasn’t the person helping me.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Then who was?””

Valerie’s voice cracked.

“Your brother.””

I looked at Ethan’s name in my recent calls.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“You’re lying.””

“I wish I was.””

I stood up.

“Why would Ethan do this?””

Valerie whispered:

“Because he thought he was saving the family.””

The same words.

Protecting.

Saving.

Helping.

Everyone used them.

“What did he do?””

Valerie took a shaky breath.

“He convinced me that you weren’t strong enough.””

My chest tightened.

“He said Lily would eventually destroy your life.””

I felt anger rise.

“And you believed him?””

“I was scared.””

“You always say that.””

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“But Daniel…”

“What?””

“The person who gave Ethan access to all those records…”

She stopped.

“Wasn’t your father.””

I froze.

“What are you saying?””

Valerie whispered:

“Your mother helped him.””

I looked at Evelyn.

She looked away.

And that was when I knew.

Not everything Valerie said was true.

But not everything she said was a lie.

I ended the call.

No one spoke.

Then my mother quietly said:

“Daniel.””

I looked at her.

“Tell me the truth.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

My stomach dropped.

“What did you do?””

She whispered:

“I helped Ethan get the records.””

The room went silent.

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“Because I was afraid of what would happen if you found out the truth about your brother.””

“What truth?””

She closed her eyes.

Then said:

“Ethan wasn’t trying to take Lily away from you.””

May you like

I waited.

“He was trying to stop someone else from taking her.””
