Chapter 7: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

I stared at the document in my hands.

My signature was there.

My name.

My information.

Everything looked real.

Except one thing.

I had never signed it.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Where did you get this?””

She didn’t answer right away.

The confidence she had carried for months was gone.

Now she looked like someone who knew a storm was coming.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

I held up the paper.

“Don’t say my name like that. Explain this.””

Emily stood beside me, confused.

I immediately lowered my voice.

“Go inside, sweetheart.””

She looked between us.

“Are you okay?””

I forced a smile.

“I’m okay.””

She slowly walked toward the house.

The second the door closed, I turned back to Vanessa.

“Talk.””

She crossed her arms.

“I didn’t create it.””

“But you knew about it.””

She looked away.

That was enough.

“How long?””

“Daniel…”

“How long did you know someone was using my name?””

Her eyes became defensive.

“I was trying to fix it.””

“By hiding it?””

She said nothing.

I walked into the house and placed the document on the kitchen table.

The same table where I had found the evidence of the stolen money.

The same table where I realized my wife had been hiding pieces of my life from me.

“Who witnessed this?””

Vanessa sat down slowly.

“I can’t tell you.””

I stared at her.

“You can’t?””

“Because if I do, everything falls apart.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everything?””

I pointed upstairs.

“My daughter already thinks she’s unwanted.””

Vanessa flinched.

“This isn’t about Emily.””

I froze.

“What did you say?””

She immediately looked uncomfortable.

“I mean…”

“No. Say it again.””

She stood.

“You’re making this about her because you know I care about my children.””

“And I don’t?””

“That’s not what I meant.””

“It’s exactly what you meant.””

For years, I had defended Vanessa.

When people questioned our blended family, I told them we were stronger because we chose each other.

I believed love was a decision.

But I never imagined I was the only one making it.

The next morning, I met with Michael again.

I placed the document on his desk.

He studied it carefully.

After several minutes, his expression changed.

“Daniel.””

“What?””

“This isn’t just a mistake.””

My stomach tightened.

“What do you mean?””

He pointed at the signature.

“This was copied.””

“Copied?””

“Yes.””

He opened another file.

“The pressure marks don’t match. The ink is different.””

I stared.

Someone had taken my signature from another document.

Then placed it here.

“So someone forged this.””

Michael nodded.

“And the purpose?””

I already knew.

“Control.””

He looked at me.

“Exactly.””

I leaned back.

“How much damage can this do?””

“That depends on what else was filed.””

“Filed where?””

He looked at me seriously.

“Family court.””

The room went silent.

“She was preparing for custody.””

“Yes.””

“And the money?””

“Could be part of the same strategy.””

I rubbed my face.

“She wanted to make it look like she handled everything.””

Michael nodded.

“Someone controlling finances often tries to create a paper trail.””

I looked out the window.

All I could think about was Emily.

Her mother had died years ago.

And now the person I trusted most had been quietly trying to take away the security I built for her.

When I returned home, I found Madison sitting on the front steps.

She looked nervous.

“Daniel?””

I stopped.

“What’s wrong?””

She looked down.

“I need to tell you something.””

I waited.

She took a deep breath.

“My mom told me not to say anything.””

“About what?””

Her eyes filled with guilt.

“About the money.””

I sat beside her.

“Madison, I need the truth.””

She nodded.

“I thought it was her money.””

“Why?””

“She told us Emily’s account was just a family account.””

I closed my eyes.

“And you believed her.””

She looked ashamed.

“I didn’t know.””

“I believe you.””

Madison wiped her face.

“But there’s something else.””

“What?””

She looked toward the house.

“She has another folder.””

My heart started racing.

“Where?””

“In her closet.””

“What’s inside?””

Madison whispered:

“She said it was the thing that would make sure you couldn’t take Emily away from her.””

I stood up.

“Did you see it?””

She nodded.

“Once.””

“What was on it?””

Madison looked terrified.

“Pictures.””

“Pictures of what?””

May you like

She swallowed.

“Pictures of Emily crying.””
