Chapter 6: The Document Hidden Away
I stared at the photo for almost a full minute.
The person in the picture was unmistakably Vanessa.
She was sitting in a lawyer’s office.
A pen was in her hand.
A stack of papers was in front of her.
But the part that caught my attention wasn’t her signature.
It was the title at the top of the document.
*Emergency Custody Modification Request.*
My stomach dropped.
I looked up at Vanessa.
“Who sent this?””
She didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
“Vanessa.””
Her face turned pale.
“You’re misunderstanding.””
“Am I?””
I walked closer.
“Were you trying to change custody of Emily?””
“No.””
“Then why is your signature on this?””
She looked at the phone.
Then back at me.
“I was protecting myself.””
“From what?””
“From you.””
I laughed quietly.
The sound surprised even me.
“From me?””
“Yes.””
“You used my daughter’s savings, and now you’re saying you’re the victim?””
Her voice rose.
“You’ve been making me look like a bad mother.””
“No. Your actions did that.””
She grabbed the phone from my hand.
“You don’t know the whole story.””
“Then tell me.””
She stood there.
Silent.
I waited.
Nothing.
Because there was nothing she could say.
Later that afternoon, I went through every drawer in my office.
Every file.
Every document.
I needed to know how deep this went.
Then I found something hidden behind old tax papers.
Another envelope.
My name was written on it.
Inside was a copy of a letter from Vanessa’s attorney.
The first sentence made my heart race.
*Regarding the transfer of marital assets and future guardianship arrangements…*
I kept reading.
Vanessa had been preparing for months.
She wasn’t just spending Emily’s money.
She was building a case.
A case to make herself look like Emily’s primary caregiver.
A case to give her control.
I heard footsteps.
I quickly turned.
Emily was standing at the door.
“Daddy?””
I closed the papers.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
She looked nervous.
“Are you and Vanessa getting divorced?””
I hated that she knew enough to ask.
I walked over and hugged her.
“I don’t know yet.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Is it because of me?””
I held her shoulders.
“No.””
“Then why is everyone fighting?””
I looked at my daughter.
The little girl who had taped her own shoe because she didn’t want to bother anyone.
“Because sometimes adults make choices that hurt people.””
Emily looked down.
“I just wanted shoes.””
That sentence broke me.
I hugged her tighter.
“You’re getting new shoes.””
She smiled slightly.
“Really?””
“Yes.””
“Not expensive ones.””
I looked at her.
“Why not?””
She shrugged.
“I don’t want Vanessa to be mad.””
My heart shattered again.
A child should never be afraid of asking for something she needs.
That evening, I took Emily shopping.
Not for anything extravagant.
Just shoes.
The simple pair she wanted.
When she put them on, she smiled for the first time in days.
“Can I keep the old ones?””
I smiled sadly.
“Why?””
“Because Mommy bought them.””
I nodded.
“We’ll keep them.””
When we got home, Vanessa was waiting in the driveway.
She looked different.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Worried.
“Daniel.””
I stopped.
“What?””
She held a small envelope.
“I need to tell you something before someone else does.””
I didn’t move.
“What?””
She looked at Emily.
Then back at me.
“Emily’s account wasn’t the only thing I changed.””
My body went still.
“What else?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I changed something in your estate documents.””
The words hit like a punch.
“My estate?””
She nodded.
“And if you don’t believe me…”
She handed me the envelope.
Inside was a copy of a document with my signature.
Except I knew I had never signed it.
And at the bottom was the name of the person who witnessed it.
Someone who had been in my house.
May you like
Someone I trusted.
*Emily’s former guardian.*
