Chapter 5: The Money Trail

The next morning, I woke up before sunrise.

I didn’t sleep.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Emily standing in that shoe store.

Holding twenty-four-dollar sneakers.

Asking if she was a problem.

I sat at my desk with every document spread out in front of me.

Bank statements.

Authorization forms.

Receipts.

Emails.

The more I looked, the worse it became.

Vanessa hadn’t taken the money in one moment.

She had slowly moved it.

A few hundred dollars.

Then another payment.

Then another.

Small enough that I didn’t notice.

Large enough that Emily’s account was disappearing.

At seven in the morning, my phone rang.

It was my bank representative.

“Mr. Cross, I reviewed the account history.””

“Tell me what you found.””

“There are several transfers made from the account over the past year.””

“How many?””

“Thirty-seven.””

I closed my eyes.

Thirty-seven times.

“Were they authorized?””

The woman hesitated.

“Technically, yes.””

“What does that mean?””

“The authorization paperwork allowed access.””

I looked at the folder on my desk.

“But why was she allowed access?””

“That’s something you’ll need to discuss with your attorney.””

Attorney.

That word kept appearing.

I ended the call and immediately contacted someone I trusted.

Two hours later, I was sitting across from my family lawyer, Michael.

He flipped through the documents silently.

Finally, he looked up.

“Daniel, where did you get these?””

“My wife gave them to me.””

His eyebrows lifted.

“She gave you evidence?””

“She thought it would prove she did nothing wrong.””

Michael looked back down.

“That may have been a mistake.””

“What does this mean?””

He tapped one page.

“Vanessa was never supposed to have unlimited access.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

“This document gives her authority for specific child-related expenses.””

“Clothing?””

“Yes.””

“School?””

“Yes.””

“Luxury shopping for her own children?””

“No.””

I stared at him.

“So she abused access.””

Michael didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, he slid another paper toward me.

“Look at this.””

I read the transaction.

A transfer from Emily’s account.

$5,000.

Destination:

Madison’s private shopping account.

My hands went cold.

“She used Emily’s money for Madison?””

“It appears so.””

I stood up.

I couldn’t sit anymore.

Michael watched me carefully.

“Daniel, before you do anything, you need to think about Emily.””

“I am thinking about her.””

“Then don’t let anger make the decisions.””

I looked out the window.

“I spent years trusting Vanessa.””

Michael nodded.

“And now?””

I thought about the video.

About Emily’s face.

About her asking if she was unwanted.

“Now I’m wondering what else I don’t know.””

When I returned home, Vanessa was in the living room.

She was sitting with Madison and Tyler.

The moment I entered, all three looked at me.

Vanessa immediately noticed my expression.

“You talked to someone.””

“Yes.””

Her face changed.

“Who?””

“My lawyer.””

Madison looked nervous.

Tyler stopped scrolling on his phone.

Vanessa stood.

“You’re seriously doing this?””

“I’m trying to protect my daughter.””

“You’re destroying this family.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

I pointed upstairs.

“You did that when you taught Emily she mattered less.””

Vanessa’s voice became louder.

“You have no idea what I’ve sacrificed.””

“I know exactly what you sacrificed.””

She stepped closer.

“My children deserve things too.””

“And Emily deserves shoes.””

Silence.

Madison looked away.

Then Tyler quietly said:

“Mom…”

Vanessa turned.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“I thought you said the money came from your account.””

Vanessa froze.

I looked at Tyler.

“What did you say?””

Tyler’s face went pale.

“I…”

Vanessa interrupted.

“Go upstairs.””

“Mom—”

“Now.””

The kids left.

But it was too late.

I had heard enough.

Vanessa had lied to them too.

I picked up my phone.

“I need to ask you one question.””

She stared at me.

“What?””

“How many people did you tell that Emily’s money was yours?””

Her face tightened.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

There was a photo attached.

A photo of Vanessa signing another document.

And underneath it was one sentence:

*You need to see what she planned to do next.*
