Chapter 2: The Account She Was Never Supposed to Touch

I stepped away from the crowd and answered the call.

“Mr. Cross?””

“Yes.””

“This is your bank’s fraud department. We’re contacting you about unusual activity on your daughter’s savings account.””

I looked directly at Vanessa.

She was pretending not to listen.

But she was listening.

“How much was withdrawn?”” I asked.

The woman paused.

“Multiple transactions were made today. The total amount is currently showing as twelve thousand dollars.””

My stomach dropped.

Twelve thousand.

For a moment, the noise of the mall disappeared.

All I could hear was Emily quietly asking if she could put the shoes back.

I turned around.

She was carefully returning the sneakers to the shelf.

Like she didn’t deserve them.

I walked back.

“Emily.””

She looked up.

“Can you wait here for Daddy?””

She nodded.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You’re overreacting.””

I stared at her.

“You spent twelve thousand dollars from Emily’s savings.””

“It wasn’t like that.””

“Then explain it.””

She glanced around.

People were still watching.

Her voice became defensive.

“I was going to replace it.””

“With what?””

She didn’t answer.

I looked at Madison and Tyler.

They suddenly became quiet.

“Did they know?””

Vanessa frowned.

“Don’t involve the kids.””

“I asked a question.””

Madison looked uncomfortable.

Tyler stared at the floor.

That told me enough.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“You’re making this worse than it is.””

“No. You made it worse when you decided my daughter didn’t deserve a twenty-four-dollar pair of shoes.””

Her jaw tightened.

“You always treat Emily like she’s some fragile little angel.””

“She lost her mother when she was four.””

“And my kids lost their father too.””

I froze.

Vanessa had always used that sentence whenever I questioned her.

But there was a difference.

I never ignored her children.

I helped raise them.

I paid school expenses.

I bought them clothes.

I treated them like family.

And somehow, my own daughter had become the child who had to beg for necessities.

I looked at Emily.

She was sitting on a bench, holding her old sneakers in her lap.

“Daddy?””

I walked over.

“What is it?””

She hesitated.

“Are you mad at me?””

That question broke something inside me.

I knelt down.

“No, sweetheart.””

“But Vanessa said money was tight because of me.””

I felt my entire body go still.

“When did she say that?””

Emily looked scared.

“I don’t know.””

“Emily.””

She whispered:

“Sometimes she says I’m expensive.””

I closed my eyes.

I didn’t want my daughter seeing my anger.

Not yet.

I stood and turned back toward Vanessa.

“What else have you told her?””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“You’re twisting things.””

“Answer me.””

“I was frustrated.””

“She’s eight years old.””

“She needs to understand the world.””

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“Understanding the world doesn’t mean feeling unwanted in her own home.””

Vanessa grabbed her bags.

“I’m leaving.””

“No.””

She stopped.

“No?””

I pointed at the receipt.

“You’re going to explain every single charge.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You don’t get to interrogate me.””

“I absolutely do when you steal from my daughter.””

The word hung between us.

Steal.

Vanessa’s face turned pale.

“You better be careful with that accusation.””

“Then prove me wrong.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence told me more than any confession could.

Later that evening, after we got home, I sat at the kitchen table reviewing the bank statements.

The withdrawals weren’t just from today.

There were smaller charges over the last six months.

Clothes.

Restaurants.

Electronics.

Things I had assumed came from Vanessa’s own money.

They didn’t.

Emily’s account had been slowly drained.

Then I found something that made my hands shake.

A transfer labeled:

*Family expenses — authorized by Vanessa.*

I stared at the screen.

Vanessa had not only used the money.

She had renamed the withdrawals.

A sound came from behind me.

I turned.

Vanessa was standing in the doorway.

And she wasn’t alone.

She was holding a folder.

“You want the truth?”” she said quietly.

I looked at the folder.

“What’s that?””

Her expression hardened.

“Something you should have seen months ago.””

She placed it on the table.

My name was written across the front.

May you like

But underneath it was a sentence that made my blood freeze.

*Guardianship and financial authority documents.*
