Chapter 3: The Secret Behind Emily’s Savings

I didn’t touch the folder.

Not immediately.

I just stared at it.

Vanessa stood across from me with a confidence I didn’t understand.

It wasn’t the confidence of someone caught.

It was the confidence of someone who believed she still had control.

“What is this?”” I asked.

She pulled out a chair and sat down.

“You’re acting like I committed some terrible crime.””

“My daughter’s savings are missing twelve thousand dollars.””

“You’re being dramatic.””

I opened the folder.

The first page was filled with legal language.

My eyes moved quickly.

Then I saw Vanessa’s signature.

My heart started beating faster.

“Why is your name on this?””

She leaned back.

“Because someone had to make decisions.””

“Decisions for Emily?””

“Yes.””

“I never gave you permission.””

Vanessa smiled slightly.

“That’s where you’re wrong.””

I looked closer.

There was a document attached.

A temporary financial authorization form.

My signature was on it.

But something felt wrong.

I remembered signing paperwork after Emily’s mother died.

There had been dozens of forms.

Insurance.

School.

Medical records.

Bank documents.

I had trusted Vanessa because she was my wife.

Because I believed she wanted to help.

I looked at her.

“What did you do?””

Her face hardened.

“I helped this family.””

“No. You helped yourself.””

She stood up.

“You have no idea how difficult it is raising three children.””

“I have one daughter.””

“And I have two children who deserve the same opportunities.””

“They got opportunities. Emily got a broken shoe.””

Vanessa looked away.

For a second, I thought I saw guilt.

Then it disappeared.

“She has everything she needs.””

I shook my head.

“She had tape holding her shoe together.””

Silence filled the kitchen.

Then I heard footsteps.

Emily was standing at the hallway entrance.

She was holding her old sneakers.

“Daddy?””

I immediately walked toward her.

“Why are you awake?””

She looked at Vanessa.

“Am I going to have to leave?””

The question stopped me.

“What?””

Emily hugged her shoes against her chest.

“Because Vanessa said if I keep causing problems, maybe I should live somewhere else.””

My entire body went cold.

I turned slowly.

“Did you say that?””

Vanessa’s eyes widened.

“Daniel, that’s not what I meant.””

“What did you mean?””

“She’s emotional. She misunderstood.””

Emily started crying.

“I didn’t misunderstand.””

I knelt beside her.

“Sweetheart, listen to me.””

She looked at me.

“You are never a problem.””

Her tears fell faster.

“But she said Madison and Tyler are your family too.””

“They are.””

“Then why do I feel like I’m not?””

That question hurt more than anything Vanessa had done.

I pulled my daughter into my arms.

Behind us, Vanessa sighed.

“You’re making her dependent on you.””

I looked up.

“No. I’m making sure she knows she matters.””

Vanessa grabbed her phone.

“Fine.””

The word sounded like a threat.

“Since you clearly think I’m the villain, maybe you should see what happens when you’re not around.””

I stood.

“What does that mean?””

She smiled coldly.

“You’re not the only one with proof.””

She tapped her phone.

Then she placed it on the table.

A video was already open.

I pressed play.

The screen showed our house.

The date was from three weeks earlier.

And then I saw Emily walking into the kitchen.

She was holding a school paper.

Vanessa appeared on screen.

My daughter looked excited.

“Look, I got an award.””

Vanessa barely looked up.

Then she said something that made my blood turn cold.

I leaned closer.

May you like

Because I needed to hear every word.

And when the audio played, I realized Vanessa had been hiding something far worse than money.
