Chapter 4: The Video She Thought Would Save Her

The kitchen felt colder than it had ever felt before.

I stood frozen beside the table, staring at the phone screen.

Vanessa looked almost satisfied.

She thought whatever was on that video would prove her point.

She thought she had finally gained control.

But she didn’t understand one thing.

I wasn’t afraid of the truth.

I pressed play again.

The footage showed Emily standing in our kitchen, holding a small piece of paper.

Even through the grainy security camera, I could see my daughter’s excitement.

“Vanessa, look,” Emily said.

“My teacher gave me this because I helped another student.””

Vanessa didn’t even look up from her phone.

“So?””

Emily’s smile faded slightly.

“I got a kindness award.””

“That’s nice.””

The way Vanessa said it made the words feel empty.

Emily looked down.

“I thought maybe Daddy would put it on the fridge.””

Vanessa finally looked up.

And what she said next made my hands curl into fists.

“You know, Emily, not everything has to be about getting attention.””

I stopped breathing.

On the video, my daughter looked confused.

“Attention?””

“Yes.””

Vanessa placed her phone on the counter.

“Your father already spends enough time worrying about you.””

Emily’s face changed.

The excitement disappeared.

“I wasn’t trying to bother him.””

Vanessa sighed.

“That’s what you always say.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You said this to her?””

She crossed her arms.

“She was being dramatic.””

“No. She was eight years old showing you something she was proud of.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She walked closer.

“Emily needs to learn that the world doesn’t revolve around her.””

I stared at her.

“She’s a child.””

“And Madison and Tyler are children too.””

“There’s a difference between treating kids equally and making one child feel unwanted.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“You always defend her.””

“Because someone has to.””

The room went silent.

Emily stood in the hallway, watching us.

I immediately regretted letting her hear any of it.

I walked toward her.

“Sweetheart, go upstairs for a minute.””

She didn’t move.

“Daddy…”

Her voice cracked.

“Did I really make things harder?””

My heart broke.

“No.””

I knelt down.

“Never.””

She wiped her eyes.

“But Vanessa said…”

“I don’t care what she said.””

Emily looked toward Vanessa.

Then quietly asked:

“Does she hate me?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

But she didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

I took Emily upstairs and sat with her on the edge of her bed.

She held her worn sneakers in her hands.

“Mommy bought me these,” she whispered.

I swallowed hard.

“I know.””

“She said they were my favorite color.””

I looked at the shoes.

A faded pair of blue sneakers.

The last thing her mother had bought before she passed away.

Suddenly, I understood.

This wasn’t just about shoes.

Emily wasn’t asking for expensive things.

She was asking to feel chosen.

When I returned downstairs, Vanessa was waiting.

“You’re going to leave me over this?””

I stared at her.

“I’m trying to understand how long this has been happening.””

She looked away.

“Nothing happened.””

“Then why did my daughter ask if she’s a problem?””

No answer.

“Why did you use her savings?””

“She’s part of this family.””

“Then why didn’t she get treated like one?””

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“You’re making me look bad.””

“No. Your choices are doing that.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You think you’re better than me?””

“No.””

I picked up the folder again.

“But I think my daughter deserves better than this.””

Vanessa suddenly reached for the folder.

I pulled it away.

“Don’t.””

Her expression changed.

“Give me that.””

“Why?””

“Because you don’t know what you’re reading.””

“That’s exactly why I’m reading it.””

She stepped closer.

“Daniel, you need to be careful.””

The warning in her voice surprised me.

“Is that a threat?””

“No.””

She smiled slightly.

“It’s advice.””

I opened the next page.

Then I saw a name.

A lawyer.

A date.

And a section I didn’t understand.

*Modification of financial access and parental authority.*

My stomach tightened.

“Vanessa…”

She looked at me.

“What?””

“Why did you file paperwork changing access to Emily’s account?””

Her face went completely still.

May you like

And for the first time since I walked into that shoe store, she looked afraid.

Because she knew I had found something she never wanted me to see.
