Chapter 9: The Third Person

By noon, my kitchen looked like an investigation room.

Documents covered the table.

Rachel’s letter.

Trust records.

Estate papers.

Copies Amanda had kept for years.

I hated every page.

Each one represented another secret someone had decided I didn’t deserve to know.

Mason sat upstairs with Lily.

I could hear cartoons playing softly.

That sound was the only normal thing left in my house.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Who taught you to copy my signature?””

Her eyes narrowed.

“I figured it out.””

“From old cards?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She said nothing.

Amanda leaned forward.

“Because somebody had already done it.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“What are you suggesting?””

“You recognized the technique.””

“That’s ridiculous.””

“Is it?””

I watched Vanessa carefully.

“You knew about the old transfer.””

“No.””

“You knew enough to target Lily’s trust.””

Her jaw tightened.

“I believed that money should have been mine.””

“So you married me?””

Her silence lasted too long.

“Answer me.””

“At first…”

My chest went hollow.

Amanda whispered, “Oh my God.””

Vanessa wiped tears from her cheeks.

“At first, yes.””

I felt something inside me finally die.

Every anniversary.

Every kiss.

Every night she told me she loved me.

“How long?””

“I don’t know.””

“You approached me because of money?””

“I approached you because I wanted answers.””

“You married me.””

“I fell in love with you.””

I almost laughed.

“You hurt my daughter.””

“I know.””

“No, Vanessa. You don’t get to say that like it fixes anything.””

She looked down.

“I hated myself afterward.””

“Which time?””

She flinched.

I didn’t feel guilty.

“Which time did you hate yourself? After locking the pantry? After denying her dinner? After frightening Mason into silence?””

She began crying.

“I need help.””

“You do.””

I stepped away.

“But my children are not going to pay while you get it.””

Amanda gathered the papers.

“We need an attorney.””

“And the police,” I said.

Vanessa looked up sharply.

“Michael.””

“The forged signatures need to be investigated.””

“You’ll destroy Mason’s life.””

“No.””

Mason’s voice came from the doorway.

We all turned.

He stood there holding Lily’s hand.

“You keep saying that.””

Vanessa’s face crumpled.

“Mason…”

“You say Dad destroys everything if he tells.””

He swallowed.

“But you’re the one who makes everybody scared.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

I walked over and placed my hand on Mason’s shoulder.

“You did the right thing.””

He nodded.

Then he looked at Amanda.

“There’s another man.””

Silence.

“What man?”” I asked.

Mason pointed toward Vanessa.

“The man who comes here when Dad works.””

Every muscle in my body tightened.

Vanessa went still.

“Mason,” she whispered.

He continued.

“He comes in the afternoon.””

“How often?””

“I don’t know.””

“What does he look like?””

“Older.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“He’s confused.””

Mason backed toward me.

“No, I’m not.””

“What does the man do?”” Amanda asked.

Mason thought.

“He brings papers.””

My eyes went to Vanessa.

“What papers?””

“I don’t know what he means.””

Mason shook his head.

“Yes, you do.””

He looked at me.

“They sit at the table and practice.””

“Practice what?””

“Your name.””

My stomach turned.

Vanessa grabbed the back of a chair.

Amanda whispered, “Who is he?””

Mason answered before Vanessa could.

“I heard Mom call him Mr. Hale.””

Amanda dropped the documents.

I looked at her.

“You know that name?””

She stared at Vanessa.

“Gerald Hale?””

Vanessa said nothing.

Amanda’s face had gone completely white.

“Who is Gerald Hale?””

She looked at me.

“He handled my father’s estate.””

The room fell silent.

The executor.

The man responsible for transferring Vanessa’s inheritance.

I turned toward my wife.

“You’ve been meeting with him?””

She whispered, “Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he contacted me.””

“When?””

“Last year.””

“What did he want?””

Vanessa looked at Amanda.

Then at me.

“He said Thomas never intended for Lily to keep the entire estate.””

Amanda shook her head.

“He lied.””

“I didn’t know that.””

“So you helped him alter the trust?””

Vanessa’s shoulders dropped.

“I helped him prepare documents.””

My heart pounded.

“You forged my signature.””

“Yes.””

Finally.

The truth.

Amanda picked up her phone.

“We call the police now.””

Vanessa suddenly grabbed her wrist.

“Wait.””

Amanda pulled away.

“Don’t touch me.””

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Vanessa looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Terrified.

“Hale has the originals.””

“What originals?”” I asked.

“Thomas’s final estate instructions.””

Amanda frowned.

“We have them.””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You have copies.””

The room went quiet.

“What’s different about the originals?””

Vanessa looked toward the stairs, making sure the children were far enough away.

Then she whispered:

“Thomas changed the beneficiary before he died.””

Amanda stared at her.

“To who?””

Vanessa looked directly at me.

“Not Lily.””

My heartbeat thundered.

“Then who?””

Before she could answer, the doorbell rang.

Nobody moved.

It rang again.

Mason suddenly grabbed my hand.

“That’s him.””

I looked through the window.

An older man in a gray suit stood on my porch.

Gerald Hale.

He held a leather briefcase.

And when Vanessa saw him, she whispered:

“He knows Rachel didn’t die with the original will.””

I turned toward her.

“What does that mean?””

The doorbell rang a third time.

Then Hale called through the door.

“Michael, I know you’re in there.””

May you like

A pause.

“I think it’s time you learned what your first wife really left behind.””
