Chapter 7: Rachel Knew

I read Rachel’s first sentence three times.

Michael, if Vanessa finds you, protect Lily from her.

The words blurred in front of me.

My hands were shaking so badly the paper crackled.

Across the room, Vanessa looked like she wanted to disappear.

Amanda stood beside the front door.

Mason had moved closer to Lily.

He put himself between his mother and my daughter without anyone telling him to.

That broke my heart.

I looked down and kept reading.

Rachel had written the letter from the hospital.

She said she had discovered that Vanessa had been asking questions at the counseling center.

Not ordinary questions.

Questions about Lily.

About custody.

About Rachel’s illness.

About Lily’s inheritance.

And about me.

Rachel had confronted her.

Vanessa denied everything.

Then Rachel discovered something else.

I stopped reading.

“What?””

Amanda stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

I looked at Vanessa.

“She accessed Rachel’s intake file.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

I raised the letter.

“Rachel says you did.””

“She was sick, Michael.””

The sentence made Amanda’s face change.

“Careful.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You know what I mean.””

“No,” Amanda said.

“Say exactly what you mean.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“She was taking medication. She was scared. She misunderstood things.””

Amanda stepped forward.

“My sister was dying, not delusional.””

I continued reading.

Rachel had reported Vanessa to a supervisor.

Two weeks later, Vanessa stopped working at the center.

That explained why she had never mentioned the job.

It also explained something else.

Rachel had written:

She knows about the trust.

My chest tightened.

“She knew.””

Amanda nodded.

“That was why Rachel panicked.””

“How much is in the trust?””

Vanessa asked quietly.

I slowly looked up.

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa realized what she had done.

Her face changed.

I laughed once.

“You don’t even know.””

“I was just asking.””

“You married me without knowing the number?””

“Michael—”

“Was that frustrating?””

She stared at me.

“Stop.””

“Was that why you needed the paperwork?””

Her eyes hardened.

“I loved you.””

“Did you?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did you forge my signature?””

“I didn’t.””

Mason spoke from behind me.

“You did.””

Vanessa turned on him.

“Mason, enough!””

He recoiled.

I stepped between them.

“Don’t speak to him like that.””

“He’s my son.””

“And he’s terrified of you.””

Her face collapsed for half a second.

That one landed.

“Mason,” she whispered, “come here.””

He shook his head.

“Please.””

Another shake.

“I’m your mother.””

His voice cracked.

“You hurt Lily.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“I was disciplining her.””

“You locked her food.””

“She was being difficult.””

“She cried at night.””

Vanessa went silent.

Mason’s eyes filled.

“You told me not to give her snacks.””

I turned toward him.

“What?””

He wiped his face.

“When you worked late, Lily would ask me for food.””

He looked at his mother.

“She said if I gave Lily anything, she’d send me away to my real dad.””

Vanessa’s mouth opened.

“Mason—”

“You said he didn’t want me.””

The boy began crying.

I crouched in front of him.

“Mason, look at me.””

He did.

“You never have to earn food in this house.””

His chin trembled.

“And you never have to protect an adult’s secrets.””

He nodded.

I pulled him against me.

Lily joined us.

For a few seconds, I held both children.

Then Amanda whispered:

“Michael, finish the letter.””

I didn’t want to.

Every line felt like reopening Rachel’s grave.

But I had to know.

Rachel wrote that she had collected evidence.

Copies of internal complaints.

A statement from another employee.

Records showing Vanessa had repeatedly accessed files she had no reason to view.

Rachel had given those materials to someone she trusted.

Amanda.

I looked up.

“You had evidence all these years?””

Amanda’s eyes filled with shame.

“I had part of it.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Rachel made me promise.””

“That makes no sense.””

“It will.””

“When?””

“When you finish reading.””

I returned to the letter.

The final paragraph was different.

The handwriting was shakier.

Michael, I need you to forgive me for one more secret.

My heartbeat slowed.

I glanced at Amanda.

She looked away.

I continued.

Years ago, before Lily was born, I made a decision without telling you. I believed I was protecting our family. I was wrong.

I swallowed.

“What decision?””

Vanessa suddenly moved toward the hallway.

Amanda blocked her.

“You’re staying.””

“Move.””

“No.””

I read the next line.

The counseling center was not the first place I met Vanessa.

My mouth went dry.

I looked at my wife.

She was staring at the floor.

“Where did Rachel meet you?””

Vanessa said nothing.

I read on.

Rachel wrote that she had known Vanessa years earlier.

Before Lily.

Before our divorce.

Before Vanessa’s marriage to Mason’s father.

The next sentence made my stomach twist.

Vanessa and I were connected by something I never told you.

I looked at Amanda.

“What does that mean?””

Amanda started crying.

“I promised Rachel the letter would tell you.””

“Tell me what?””

She pointed at the second page.

I turned it over.

There was one final paragraph.

And one name.

A name I recognized immediately.

Not Vanessa’s.

Not Amanda’s.

It was the name of Rachel’s father.

Thomas Reed.

Beneath it, Rachel had written:

Vanessa is his daughter too.
