Chapter 10: The Man at My Door

I didn’t open the door immediately.

Gerald Hale stood on my porch as if he had been invited.

Gray suit.

Silver hair.

Leather briefcase in one hand.

Through the glass, I could see him checking his watch.

Vanessa whispered behind me.

“Don’t let him in.””

I turned.

“Five minutes ago, you said he had the originals.””

“He does.””

“Then why shouldn’t I hear him?””

“Because Gerald never tells the truth unless the truth helps him.””

Amanda stepped beside me.

“Call the police first.””

Hale knocked again.

“Michael.””

His voice was calm.

“I know Amanda is there.””

Amanda froze.

“How does he know?””

I looked at Vanessa.

She shook her head.

“I didn’t call him.””

“Then who did?””

Nobody answered.

I told Mason to take Lily upstairs and lock the bedroom door.

He nodded immediately.

“Come on, Lily.””

Before they disappeared, I crouched beside him.

“Don’t open that door for anyone except me.””

“I won’t.””

Lily wrapped her arms around my neck.

“Daddy, are we safe?””

That question nearly destroyed me.

“Yes.””

I kissed her forehead.

“I’m going to make sure of it.””

When the children were upstairs, I opened the front door but kept myself between Hale and the house.

His smile was almost friendly.

“Michael Carter.””

“Why are you here?””

His eyes moved past me.

“Vanessa called.””

Vanessa shouted from the kitchen.

“I did not.””

Hale’s smile disappeared.

“Not today.””

I stared at her.

She looked confused.

“When?””

“Last night.””

“I never called you.””

Hale opened his briefcase.

“Then perhaps we have a bigger problem than I thought.””

He removed a phone and played a voicemail.

Vanessa’s voice filled the porch.

“Gerald, Michael found the notebook. He knows about the trust. Call me.””

Vanessa went pale.

“That isn’t me.””

It sounded exactly like her.

Amanda stepped forward.

“When did you receive that?””

“Eleven forty-three.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I was downstairs with Michael.””

She looked at me.

“I didn’t make that call.””

I remembered.

At 11:43, Vanessa had been sitting in the living room while I stayed near the stairs.

She could have slipped away briefly.

But something about her reaction felt different.

Hale put the phone away.

“May I come inside?””

“No.””

His jaw tightened.

“Then we discuss this here.””

“Discuss what?””

“Thomas Reed’s estate.””

Amanda crossed her arms.

“You stole Vanessa’s inheritance.””

Hale looked almost offended.

“I executed Thomas’s instructions.””

“By transferring seven hundred fifty thousand dollars using Michael’s forged signature?””

His eyes shifted toward me.

“That signature was supplied by Rachel.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“Rachel brought the documents.””

Amanda shook her head.

“That’s impossible.””

“It happened.””

“Four days after Rachel died?””

For the first time, Hale lost his composure.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

“What date?””

Amanda told him.

He frowned.

“That is not the date I processed the transfer.””

We exchanged looks.

“What date did you process it?”” I asked.

“Eleven days before Rachel’s death.””

I felt cold.

“Then why do these records say four days after?””

Hale opened his briefcase again.

He pulled out a folder.

“I wondered the same thing.””

Vanessa moved closer.

“What is that?””

“Copies from my private archive.””

He showed me a transfer authorization.

The date was different.

So was the amount.

$750,000.

But the destination wasn’t the financial company listed in Amanda’s copy.

It was a trust account.

Beneficiary:

Vanessa Reed.

Vanessa stared at it.

“My name was never Reed.””

“Legally, no,” Hale said.

“Thomas used it in the private designation.””

Amanda grabbed the paper.

“Where did the money go?””

“That is why I came.””

Hale looked directly at me.

“Three days after Thomas died, the account was emptied.””

“By who?””

“I don’t know.””

“You were the executor.””

“And I have spent years trying to determine who altered the records.””

Amanda laughed bitterly.

“Convenient.””

Hale ignored her.

“Someone replaced the original transfer documents with forged copies.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You knew?””

“No.””

Hale turned toward her.

“But you suspected.””

She looked away.

“Gerald contacted me last year because someone started moving money from Lily’s trust.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

Amanda stared at Hale.

“You told her?””

“I needed to know whether Vanessa was involved.””

“And I wasn’t,” Vanessa said.

I almost exploded.

“You forged my signature to add yourself as trustee.””

“Yes.””

She swallowed.

“But I did it because Gerald told me someone was trying to drain Lily’s account.””

I stared at Hale.

“You told my wife to commit fraud?””

“I told her we needed access.””

“You could have called me.””

“I didn’t know if you were involved.””

I stepped toward him.

“My daughter was being abused while you two played detective with her money.””

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

Hale said nothing.

I pointed toward the street.

“You’re done.””

“Michael, listen.””

“No.””

“There is one thing you need to see.””

“I’ve seen enough.””

“Not this.””

He opened the briefcase and removed a sealed envelope.

My name was written across it.

Not Rachel’s handwriting.

Thomas’s.

Amanda gasped.

“Where did you get that?””

“Thomas gave it to me.””

“When?””

“The day before he died.””

Hale held it toward me.

“He instructed me to give this to Michael only if someone attempted to change Lily’s trust.””

I took it.

Inside was a single handwritten page.

I read the first paragraph.

Then I stopped.

Amanda whispered, “What?””

I looked at Vanessa.

Then Hale.

Thomas had written that the money wasn’t the real inheritance.

There was another asset.

Something nobody had mentioned.

A property held through a private company.

Thomas had transferred ownership before his death.

Not to Rachel.

Not to Amanda.

Not to Vanessa.

To Lily.

I kept reading.

Then I reached the final sentence.

If anyone attempts to gain control of Lily’s trust, Michael must locate the original deed before Richard does.

I stared at the name.

“Who is Richard?””

Behind me, Vanessa dropped her coffee cup.

It shattered against the floor.

Hale looked at her.

May you like

And Vanessa whispered:

“My father.””
