Chapter 6: The Signature

I called the attorney who managed Lily’s trust at 8:03 that morning.

His assistant tried to schedule me for Thursday.

I refused.

“This concerns my five-year-old daughter and an unauthorized change to her trust.””

That changed everything.

Twenty minutes later, attorney David Klein called me personally.

“Michael, what unauthorized change?””

“You tell me.””

I put the call on speaker.

Vanessa sat across the kitchen table.

Mason stood in the doorway.

Lily was upstairs watching cartoons.

David typed something.

Then he became quiet.

“There was an amendment.””

My chest tightened.

“When?””

“Approximately six months ago.””

“Who requested it?””

“According to the file, you did.””

I stared at Vanessa.

“I never requested anything.””

David paused.

“The authorization contains your signature.””

“I didn’t sign it.””

Vanessa suddenly stood.

“I need some air.””

“Sit down.””

She stared at me.

I didn’t raise my voice.

I didn’t need to.

Slowly, she sat.

“David,” I said, “who was added?””

Another pause.

“Vanessa Carter.””

My wife’s maiden name.

“As what?””

“Successor emergency trustee.””

“What does that mean?””

“If you became unable to manage Lily’s affairs, Vanessa could temporarily exercise certain administrative authority.””

My mouth went dry.

“Could she take Lily’s money?””

“Not freely. There are safeguards.””

“But she could access it?””

“Under specific circumstances.””

Vanessa whispered, “Michael, I was trying to protect her.””

I turned toward her.

“From what?””

“You.””

The word landed like a stone.

Mason gasped.

I stared at Vanessa.

She leaned forward.

“Rachel was worried about your finances.””

“That’s a lie.””

“She told me you had debts.””

“I had a mortgage.””

“She said you were irresponsible.””

“Rachel and I created that trust together.””

Vanessa looked away.

David interrupted.

“Michael, there’s another issue.””

“What?””

“The amendment wasn’t processed through my office originally.””

I frowned.

“Then how did it happen?””

“It arrived with notarized documentation from another firm.””

“What firm?””

He gave me the name.

I wrote it down.

Then I recognized it.

It was the same firm printed on the appointment reminder Mason had found.

The lawyer Vanessa had apparently contacted.

“David, freeze everything.””

“I can place an administrative hold while we investigate.””

“Do it.””

Vanessa shot to her feet.

“You can’t!””

That reaction told me more than any confession.

I ended the call.

“You care an awful lot about money you claim you never wanted.””

Her face twisted.

“This was supposed to protect Lily.””

“Then why did you hide it?””

“Because you would react exactly like this.””

Mason stepped into the room.

“Mom?””

She turned.

He looked terrified, but determined.

“Tell Dad about the signatures.””

Vanessa froze.

I looked at him.

“What signatures?””

Mason swallowed.

“Mom practiced them.””

My skin prickled.

“Whose?””

He pointed at me.

“Yours.””

Vanessa shouted his name.

Mason flinched but continued.

“I saw her doing it at night.””

“When?””

“A lot.””

He mimicked writing on paper.

“She had your old birthday cards and checks.””

I stared at Vanessa.

“You forged my signature?””

“No.””

“Mason just said—”

“He’s seven!””

“And apparently he’s been telling me the truth all night.””

Vanessa grabbed her purse.

This time, I didn’t block her.

I wanted her out.

But before she reached the door, Lily appeared on the stairs.

“Daddy?””

I turned immediately.

She held a stuffed rabbit against her chest.

“What is it, sweetheart?””

“There’s somebody outside.””

Every adult in the room stopped.

I looked through the front window.

A dark sedan sat across the street.

A woman stepped out.

My heart slammed against my ribs.

I knew her.

Amanda.

Rachel’s sister.

She walked toward the house carrying a thick envelope.

Vanessa backed away from the window.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“She cannot come inside.””

“Why?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

The doorbell rang.

I opened it.

Amanda looked exhausted.

Older than I remembered.

She glanced past me and saw Vanessa.

Her expression hardened.

“I brought what Rachel left with me.””

My breath caught.

“What did she leave?””

Amanda raised the envelope.

“A letter.””

I stared at it.

“From Rachel?””

“Yes.””

My hands shook as I took it.

The handwriting on the front was unmistakable.

Rachel’s.

My name.

Michael.

I hadn’t seen her handwriting in years.

I started opening the envelope.

Vanessa suddenly whispered:

“Don’t.””

Everyone looked at her.

Amanda’s face became pale with anger.

“You knew this existed?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Amanda turned to me.

“Michael, Rachel wrote that three days before she died.””

My throat tightened.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

“Because Rachel told me not to.””

“Why?””

Amanda looked at Vanessa.

“She said I should only give it to you if Vanessa ever became part of Lily’s life.””

The room went completely still.

I looked down at the letter.

Then back at the woman I had married.

Vanessa was trembling.

Not with anger anymore.

With fear.

I unfolded the first page.

Rachel’s handwriting filled it.

The opening sentence was only nine words.

May you like

And after I read them, I finally understood why Vanessa had been terrified of this letter.

Michael, if Vanessa finds you, protect Lily from her.
