Chapter 5: Rachel’s Last Warning

I barely slept that night.

Vanessa stayed downstairs.

I stayed upstairs with the children.

I locked the bedroom door.

Not because I believed Vanessa would hurt us while I slept.

Because I no longer knew what she was capable of.

Lily curled beside me.

Mason slept on a blanket near the bed despite my telling him he could use the guest room.

“I want to stay with Lily,” he said.

Those words told me everything about the bond between them.

Whatever Vanessa had tried to create between those children, she had failed.

Mason loved Lily.

And I realized he might have been protecting her for months.

At six in the morning, I woke to a soft knock.

“Michael?””

Vanessa.

I got up quietly and opened the door only a few inches.

“What?””

“We need to talk.””

“We’ve been talking.””

“Not in front of the kids.””

I looked back at Mason.

His eyes were already open.

He had heard her.

“Give me five minutes,” I said.

Downstairs, Vanessa had made coffee.

That almost made me angry.

The normality of it.

Coffee brewing.

Morning light through the curtains.

Two lunch boxes sitting on the counter.

As though our family hadn’t exploded twelve hours earlier.

Vanessa pushed a cup toward me.

I didn’t touch it.

“Tell me about Rachel.””

She sat down.

“I met her at the center.””

“You already said that.””

“She was worried about Lily.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at her hands.

“She thought someone was watching her.””

My pulse quickened.

“Who?””

“She never told me.””

“Then why did Lily say you threatened her?””

“I didn’t threaten Rachel.””

“Lily remembers you saying I would lose her.””

Vanessa sighed.

“She misunderstood.””

“Then help me understand.””

Vanessa looked directly at me.

“Rachel wanted to change Lily’s guardianship.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“She was afraid something would happen after she died.””

“Something involving me?””

“No.””

“Then who?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Rachel’s sister.””

“Amanda?””

She nodded.

I hadn’t spoken to Amanda in almost three years.

Rachel and Amanda had fallen out shortly before Rachel’s death.

I never knew why.

Rachel refused to discuss it.

“She thought Amanda would try to take Lily,” Vanessa said.

“That doesn’t explain you.””

“Rachel needed someone who understood family court paperwork.””

“You were a receptionist.””

“I knew people.””

Something felt wrong.

Every answer created another question.

“Why did you come to Rachel’s funeral?””

Vanessa’s eyes lowered.

“Because I cared.””

“About Rachel?””

“About Lily.””

My stomach tightened.

“You barely knew her.””

Vanessa whispered, “That’s what you think.””

Before I could respond, Mason walked into the kitchen.

He was holding the second notebook.

“Mom?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“What?””

“Why is Aunt Amanda’s name in here?””

My blood went cold.

I took the notebook.

Near the back was a page I hadn’t noticed.

Amanda Reed.

Below her name were dates.

Phone calls.

Meeting locations.

Amounts of money.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You’ve been talking to Amanda?””

Vanessa stood.

“It isn’t what you think.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You keep saying that.””

Mason pointed to one entry.

“They met last month.””

I read it.

March 14.

Westfield parking garage.

$2,000.

“Two thousand dollars for what?””

Vanessa said nothing.

I grabbed my phone.

She immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t call her.””

“Why?””

“Because you don’t know Amanda.””

“I knew her for nine years.””

“No, Michael.””

Vanessa’s voice dropped.

“You knew the version Rachel allowed you to see.””

I called anyway.

Amanda answered almost immediately.

“Michael?””

Hearing her voice after three years felt surreal.

“Amanda, I need to ask you something.””

Silence.

Then:

“You found out.””

Not a question.

My chest tightened.

“Found out what?””

She exhaled slowly.

“Where are the children?””

“Upstairs.””

“Is Vanessa there?””

I looked at her.

“Yes.””

Amanda’s voice became urgent.

“Get Lily away from her.””

Vanessa lunged for my phone.

I stepped back.

“Why?””

“Because Rachel warned me.””

Vanessa shouted, “She’s lying!””

Amanda continued.

“Rachel discovered something before she died.””

“What?””

“She discovered Vanessa had been collecting information about your family.””

My skin went cold.

“Why?””

“I don’t know everything.””

“Amanda.””

“I swear.””

“Then tell me what you know.””

There was a long silence.

Finally, Amanda whispered:

“Rachel believed Vanessa wasn’t interested in you.””

I looked across the kitchen.

Vanessa had stopped moving.

“What was she interested in?””

Amanda answered with four words.

“Your daughter’s trust fund.””

The kitchen seemed to tilt.

Lily had inherited money from Rachel’s grandfather.

Money she couldn’t access until adulthood.

Money I had almost forgotten existed.

I stared at Vanessa.

She stared back.

Then Amanda said:

“Michael, there’s something else.””

“What?””

“The trust was changed six months ago.””

My heart stopped.

“That’s impossible.””

“You need to check.””

“Changed how?””

Amanda hesitated.

Then she said:

“Someone added a new emergency trustee.””

I already knew the answer before I asked.

“Who?””

May you like

Amanda whispered one name.

“Vanessa.””
