Chapter 13: The Night Rachel Died

The bedroom door opened slowly.

Richard Cole stood in the hallway.

He was older than the man in the photograph.

Thinner.

Gray hair combed neatly back.

Dark coat buttoned to his throat.

But Vanessa’s reaction told me everything I needed to know.

She stepped backward.

“Stay away from me.””

Richard smiled.

“That’s how you greet the man who raised you?””

“You didn’t raise me.””

His smile disappeared.

Hale moved between Richard and the metal box.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Richard looked at him.

“And yet you led me directly to what I needed.””

Hale’s face tightened.

“You followed us.””

“Of course.””

I slipped the flash drive into my pocket.

Richard noticed.

His eyes settled on me.

“Michael, I’m not here to hurt anyone.””

“You’ve been watching my house.””

“I’ve been protecting my interests.””

“My daughter is not your interest.””

His expression changed slightly.

“Your daughter saw something she was never supposed to see.””

Vanessa whispered, “What happened that night?””

Richard looked almost amused.

“You still don’t remember?””

“I wasn’t here.””

“Yes, you were.””

Vanessa froze.

“No.””

“You came because Thomas called you.””

Her face went blank.

Hale looked at her.

“Vanessa?””

She pressed both hands against her temples.

“I came here once.””

“When?”” I demanded.

“Years ago.””

Her breathing became shallow.

“Before Rachel died.””

My stomach tightened.

“You told me you barely knew her.””

“I lied.””

“Again.””

“I was ashamed.””

Richard laughed softly.

“She wasn’t ashamed. She was angry.””

Vanessa turned toward him.

“You told me Rachel stole my inheritance.””

“And you believed me.””

“You showed me documents.””

“Forged documents.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You forged them?””

“Vanessa,” I said, “what happened?””

She looked at me.

“Thomas called me. He said he wanted to explain everything.””

She glanced around Rachel’s childhood room.

“I came here.””

“And Rachel?””

“She arrived later.””

I could almost see the memory returning through her expression.

“Rachel knew who I was. She told me Thomas had created money for me.””

“But Richard told you she stole it.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I screamed at her.””

Her voice cracked.

“I accused her of taking everything.””

Richard interrupted.

“You did more than scream.””

Vanessa turned.

“No.””

“You threatened to expose Thomas.””

“That’s not what happened.””

“You said you would destroy the family.””

“I was angry!””

“And Rachel told you to leave.””

Vanessa began shaking.

Then I understood.

“Lily was here.””

She looked at me.

“Yes.””

My chest hurt.

“Why?””

“Rachel brought her.””

“Why would she bring a three-year-old into that?””

“She didn’t know Richard would be here.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

Vanessa looked directly at me.

“Michael, I never touched Lily that night.””

I almost laughed at the bitter irony.

“You expect that to matter now?””

“No.””

She lowered her head.

“But I need you to know.””

I looked at Richard.

“What did Lily see?””

He didn’t answer.

Hale stepped toward him.

“Thomas documented your fraud.””

Richard shrugged.

“Thomas documented suspicions.””

“We have the files.””

“You have copies.””

I touched the flash drive through my pocket.

His eyes followed my hand.

“That drive won’t save you.””

“From what?””

“The truth.””

I stepped closer.

“Then tell me.””

Richard stared at me for a long moment.

“Rachel discovered I had redirected Vanessa’s inheritance.””

“I know.””

“She planned to report me.””

“Keep going.””

“She asked me to meet her here.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No. You followed me.””

Richard ignored her.

“Rachel believed she could frighten me.””

“What happened?””

“She became emotional.””

My fists tightened.

“Don’t describe my dead wife that way.””

His eyes hardened.

“She threatened me.””

“With evidence?””

“With prison.””

“That sounds like consequences.””

Hale almost smiled.

Richard didn’t.

“She recorded our conversation.””

I glanced at the box.

“That recording is here?””

“I assume so.””

“Then why are we listening to you?””

His calm finally cracked.

“Because recordings don’t tell you everything.””

A siren sounded faintly in the distance.

Richard turned toward the window.

Hale exhaled.

“My phone sent an emergency location before we entered.””

Richard stared at him.

“You always were cautious.””

“Leave, Richard.””

But Richard looked at Vanessa.

“Tell him what Rachel said before you left.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“She said…”

Her voice broke.

“She said Lily had seen him stealing papers from Thomas’s office.””

Richard’s face became cold.

There it was.

The reason he had watched Lily.

The reason he wanted to know where she slept.

Not because a five-year-old could testify about financial records.

Because he feared what she might eventually remember.

Richard backed toward the stairs.

I followed.

“You’re not going anywhere.””

He stopped.

“Michael, you still don’t understand.””

“What?””

“Rachel didn’t die here.””

“I know that.””

“She left this house alive.””

My chest tightened.

“What are you saying?””

He smiled faintly.

“I’m saying someone followed her.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“Who?””

Richard looked directly at her.

“You did.””

Vanessa’s face collapsed.

“No.””

Richard turned and ran down the stairs.

Hale followed.

I started after them.

Then Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Michael.””

“What?””

Tears streamed down her face.

“I did follow Rachel.””

My blood went cold.

“Why?””

“Because I wanted the truth.””

“And?””

May you like

Vanessa looked toward the hidden box.

“I was the last person from this family to see Rachel alive.””
