Chapter 9: The Photograph That Exposed Everything

"Get away from the windows!"" Daniel shouted.

Sarah grabbed my arm.

"Michael, take the documents!""

Richard hurried toward the back hallway.

But I couldn't move.

Hayes was standing outside with a photograph of my daughter in his hand.

He looked directly at the window.

Then he smiled.

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

"Michael Carter," Hayes said calmly.

"You really should have stayed out of this.""

"Where did you get that photograph?""

"Your daughter is a beautiful little girl.""

"Don't you dare go near her.""

Hayes laughed.

"Then perhaps you should stop making things difficult.""

Daniel signaled for us to move away from the front of the house.

Sarah took my hand.

"There's another exit.""

We hurried through the kitchen and into a narrow hallway.

Richard followed us.

Outside, I heard a heavy knock against the front door.

"POLICE! OPEN UP!""

Daniel stopped.

"That's not a legitimate police response. We need to call the local department directly.""

Sarah opened a small side door.

A narrow alley ran behind the property.

We slipped outside.

Richard locked the door behind us.

Then we heard a second vehicle approaching.

A dark sedan stopped at the end of the alley.

A woman stepped out.

Vanessa.

She looked directly at me.

"Michael!""

I stopped.

Sarah immediately moved in front of me.

"Don't listen to her.""

Vanessa raised both hands.

"I'm not here to hurt anyone.""

I laughed bitterly.

"You shaved my daughter's head. You stole her mother's belongings. You threatened her.""

Vanessa's face crumpled.

"I know.""

"Then why are you here?""

She looked at Sarah.

"Because Victor knows I gave you the photograph.""

Sarah's expression changed.

"You gave him nothing.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"I gave him the location of the documents. He already knows about the house.""

Richard stepped forward.

"You stupid woman.""

Vanessa turned on him.

"Don't you dare blame me! You started this when you sold Eleanor's files!""

Richard looked as though she'd struck him.

I stepped between them.

"Enough. Tell me what Victor wants.""

Vanessa looked at me.

"He wants the original account ledger. It's the only document that proves where the twelve million dollars went.""

Daniel asked:

"Where is it?""

Vanessa pointed toward Sarah.

"She knows.""

Sarah shook her head.

"No. I only know where the first copy is.""

Vanessa looked terrified.

"Then we're already too late.""

A black SUV turned into the alley.

Daniel grabbed my shoulder.

"Move!""

We ran.

The SUV accelerated toward us.

Sarah pulled open the door of a nearby garage.

We rushed inside as the vehicle slammed into a stack of empty plastic containers.

A man jumped out.

He was holding a gun.

"STOP!""

Daniel pushed me behind a concrete pillar.

Sarah grabbed a metal toolbox and threw it toward the man's legs.

He stumbled.

Richard pulled a fire extinguisher from the wall and sprayed him.

White powder filled the garage.

We escaped through the rear entrance.

Two streets away, Daniel called the police.

This time, he contacted a supervisor he trusted.

Within minutes, officers arrived.

But Hayes was gone.

So was the SUV.

Vanessa had disappeared too.

We gathered inside a small conference room at the police station.

Daniel gave the officers copies of the footage, the forged trust documents, and the photographs.

I sat beside Sarah.

I still couldn't believe she was alive.

She looked at me.

"I know you have questions.""

"Thousands.""

She took my hand.

"I'll answer every one.""

I looked down at her wedding ring.

"Why didn't you contact me from another number? Why didn't you send a letter? Anything?""

Sarah lowered her eyes.

"Because Hayes had someone inside the postal service. He intercepted two letters I sent you.""

"How do you know?""

"Because one came back to me with a note.""

She reached into her bag.

The note was folded into quarters.

I opened it.

It contained one sentence.

*IF YOU CONTACT MICHAEL AGAIN, THE NEXT FUNERAL WILL BE HIS DAUGHTER'S.*

My throat tightened.

Sarah wiped her eyes.

"I couldn't risk it.""

I held her hand.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Daniel entered the room.

"Michael, we have a problem.""

I stood.

"What now?""

He placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Victor Hale entering a private banking office.

Beside him was a woman wearing a beige coat.

Vanessa.

But that wasn't what made me freeze.

The woman was carrying a familiar object.

A small wooden keepsake box.

Sarah's box.

"Where did you get this?"" I asked.

"One of the officers found it on a security camera near the bank.""

Sarah leaned closer.

"That's impossible.""

"What?""

She pointed toward the box.

"The envelope is missing.""

I stared at her.

"Which envelope?""

"The one addressed to you. The one that says, 'For Michael, if I die.''"

I nodded.

"Hayes took it.""

Sarah shook her head.

"No. That envelope was never in the keepsake box.""

I turned toward her.

"What do you mean?""

She looked directly at me.

"I wrote two envelopes. One was for you. The other was for Lily.""

I felt a chill.

"Where is Lily's?""

Sarah's face went pale.

"It was hidden inside the lining of her pink hairbrush.""

I remembered the little brush.

The one Lily carried everywhere.

The one she had been holding when Vanessa shaved her head.

I reached for my phone.

I called Mrs. Bennett.

She answered immediately.

"Michael?""

"Is Lily okay?""

"Yes, sweetheart. She's watching television.""

"Please check whether she still has her pink hairbrush.""

There was a pause.

Then Mrs. Bennett said:

"She was playing with it a few minutes ago.""

"Don't let her put it down. I'm coming home.""

Sarah stood.

"Michael, what's happening?""

I looked at her.

"The letter is with Lily.""

Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then his face turned white.

"What?""

He listened again.

"Are you certain?""

He ended the call.

I stepped toward him.

"What happened?""

Daniel looked at me.

"The officers just checked the bank records.""

"And?""

"The $480,000 transfer was approved twenty minutes ago.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"Who authorized it?""

Daniel hesitated.

Then he turned the screen toward me.

The authorization carried my signature.

But beneath it was a second signature.

Sarah Carter.

I stared at the document.

Sarah took one look and covered her mouth.

"Michael, I never signed that.""

Daniel enlarged the electronic timestamp.

The transaction had been approved from a computer registered at our home in Charlotte.

And the person who authorized it had used a security code assigned to Lily.

I grabbed my keys.

"We're going home.""

Sarah caught my arm.

"Michael, wait.""

"What?""

She looked terrified.

"There's something I haven't told you about that letter.""

I stared at her.

"What?""

She swallowed.

"The letter Lily has doesn't just reveal who arranged the accident.""

She paused.

"It reveals who was supposed to die in that accident instead of me.""

My blood ran cold.

"Who?""

Sarah looked at me with tears streaming down her face.

"Your father, Michael.""

May you like

Then she whispered:

"But he wasn't supposed to survive.""
