Chapter 14: The Ledger That Exposed My Entire Family

We reached my childhood home shortly before sunset.

The house looked smaller than I remembered.

The white paint had peeled away. The front garden was overgrown, and the old wooden swing my mother used to push me on was hanging crookedly from the oak tree.

Victor had bought the property after Richard disappeared.

But according to Eleanor, he had never discovered what was buried beneath it.

Daniel checked the street.

"We have twenty minutes before Victor's deadline.""

Sarah held the memory card.

Eleanor held the brass key.

And I carried the photograph of Lily.

We entered through the back door.

The kitchen smelled of dust and old wood.

My mother used to bake cinnamon rolls here every Sunday.

I remembered sitting on the counter, stealing pieces of dough while she pretended not to notice.

Now I was searching the same house for evidence of a criminal conspiracy.

Eleanor walked toward the basement.

"Your father built a false wall behind the old furnace.""

I looked at her.

"Richard?""

She shook her head.

"Victor.""

We followed her downstairs.

Behind the furnace was a narrow wooden panel.

She inserted the brass key into a small lock.

It opened.

Inside was a metal container.

Daniel pulled it out.

The container was heavy.

He opened it carefully.

There were three notebooks, several bank statements, and a sealed envelope.

The first notebook contained names and financial transactions.

The second contained dates and account numbers.

The third contained photographs.

Daniel began flipping through the pages.

Then he stopped.

"Michael.""

He turned the notebook toward me.

At the top of the first page was a heading.

*NORTHBRIDGE FAMILY BENEFICIARY PROGRAM.*

Beneath it were dozens of names.

My mother's.

Richard's.

Sarah's.

Vanessa's.

And finally, Lily's.

I stared at the last entry.

*LILY CARTER — BENEFICIARY VALUE: $480,000.*

But beneath that was another line.

*BIOLOGICAL PATERNITY: VICTOR HALE.*

I felt my stomach drop.

Sarah grabbed the notebook.

"That's impossible.""

Daniel examined the attached paperwork.

"There's a DNA report.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

He turned the page.

The report was dated six months before Sarah's accident.

It stated that Victor Hale was Lily's biological father.

I shook my head.

"No. Lily is my daughter.""

Sarah stepped back.

"Michael, I never...""

She stopped.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then she began crying.

I grabbed her shoulders.

"Tell me this isn't real.""

She looked at me.

"I never had an affair. I swear.""

Daniel examined the report again.

"There's something wrong with this.""

"What?""

"The sample identification numbers don't match.""

He pointed to the bottom of the page.

"This report was produced using a sample registered to a different child.""

I exhaled.

"Then Victor fabricated it.""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes. He needed a document that would allow him to challenge Lily's legal identity and gain access to her trust.""

Sarah wiped her eyes.

"That's why Vanessa was appointed as guardian.""

I stared at the documents.

Everything had been connected.

The haircut.

The stolen keepsake box.

The forged signatures.

The threats.

Victor wanted Lily's inheritance, and he had been using her identity as the key.

Then Daniel opened the sealed envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter from my mother.

Michael,

If this reaches you, the people responsible for the Northbridge operation have succeeded in separating our family.

Victor has always believed that money gives him ownership over people.

He is wrong.

The original ledger contains proof that he transferred funds belonging to hundreds of families. But there is another document that matters even more.

It is the original DNA report from the day you were born.

I stopped reading.

Daniel looked at me.

"The original report?""

I continued.

Victor is your biological father. Richard knew the truth, but he chose to raise you because he loved me.

Never confuse the man who gave you life with the man who gave you a family.

My eyes filled with tears.

I looked toward Richard.

He was standing at the bottom of the stairs.

He had followed us despite his injury.

"Why did you come?""

He smiled faintly.

"Because I wanted to see you find the truth.""

I approached him.

"Why didn't you ever tell me?""

He looked at me.

"Because I was afraid you would think my love for you was somehow less real.""

I shook my head.

"It isn't.""

He began crying.

I hugged him.

For the first time, I understood something.

Victor had given me half my DNA.

Richard had given me his entire life.

And no document could change that.

Daniel closed the notebook.

"We have enough evidence to expose Victor.""

He held up the ledger.

"Bank transfers, forged identities, illegal guardianships, and the original documents.""

Sarah checked her phone.

"How long?""

Daniel looked at the screen.

"Five minutes.""

My phone rang.

Victor.

I answered.

"Where are you?""

"At the warehouse," he said.

"Your time is almost up.""

"I found the ledger.""

Silence.

Then Victor laughed.

"Of course you did. You're a Carter. You were always going to find it.""

I looked at Daniel.

He had activated the recording.

Victor continued.

"Bring it here. And bring the original DNA report.""

"Why do you care about that report?""

"Because I want to know whether my son is finally ready to accept his father.""

I stared at the phone.

"You're not my father.""

His voice hardened.

"Biology doesn't lie, Michael.""

"No. But it doesn't make you family either.""

Victor went silent.

Then he said:

"Bring the ledger. Or Vanessa will tell your daughter what really happened to her mother.""

I froze.

"What does Vanessa have to do with Sarah's accident?""

Victor chuckled.

"Everything.""

The call ended.

Sarah grabbed my arm.

"Michael, what if he knows something we don't?""

Daniel looked at the documents.

"Then we make sure he tells us.""

We left the house together.

This time, we weren't going to negotiate.

We were going to end it.

At the warehouse, Victor was waiting near a large metal table.

Hayes stood beside him.

Vanessa was sitting in a chair.

Her face was bruised, and her hands were trembling.

When she saw me, she began crying.

"Michael, please.""

I placed the ledger on the table.

"Where's Lily?""

Victor pointed toward a small office.

"She's inside.""

I rushed toward the door.

Hayes stepped in front of me.

"Not so fast.""

Daniel raised his phone.

"Robert Hayes, you're being recorded. We have evidence linking you to financial fraud, kidnapping, and the falsification of a death investigation.""

Hayes laughed.

"Evidence is only useful when someone believes it.""

Then Sarah stepped forward.

"I believe it.""

Hayes turned.

His face changed.

Sarah looked directly at him.

"And so will the entire country.""

Daniel pressed a button.

The warehouse speakers suddenly played the recording of Victor ordering the witnesses eliminated.

Then another recording began.

Hayes's voice.

"Sarah's body has been identified. The husband has been notified. We can close the case.""

The room went silent.

Victor looked at Hayes.

"You told me that recording was destroyed!""

Hayes reached for his weapon.

But before he could draw it, several officers stormed through the warehouse entrance.

"POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!""

Hayes froze.

Victor tried to run.

An officer tackled him to the concrete floor.

Vanessa began sobbing.

And I rushed into the office.

Lily was sitting on a chair, holding her pink hairbrush.

"Daddy!""

I lifted her into my arms.

"You're safe, sweetheart.""

She buried her face against my neck.

Then she whispered:

"Daddy, Vanessa told me something.""

I held her closer.

"What did she say?""

Lily looked toward the office door.

"She said Mommy didn't die in the accident.""

I turned toward Sarah.

Her face had gone white.

Lily continued.

"She said Mommy was in the car with someone else.""

I looked at Vanessa.

She lowered her head.

Then she whispered:

"Michael, there's one final thing you need to know.""

She looked at Sarah.

"Your wife wasn't the target that night.""

May you like

She paused.

"Victor was.""
