Chapter 11: The House Where My Mother Disappeared

The country house stood nearly forty minutes outside Nashville.

Daniel drove.

Sarah sat beside me, holding the photograph of Lily.

Richard followed in a separate vehicle with two officers who had agreed to help us.

We had contacted the authorities, but the local investigators were still verifying the information about Hayes. Daniel had also reached a federal investigator familiar with the Northbridge fraud investigation.

Nobody wanted to risk Lily's safety by storming the property without knowing how many people were inside.

At 3:17 p.m., we reached the entrance.

The house was surrounded by tall trees and an old iron fence.

A security camera rotated toward our vehicle.

Daniel stopped.

"That's far enough.""

I stared at the building.

"She's in there.""

Sarah took my hand.

"We'll get her.""

A phone rang inside Daniel's jacket.

He answered.

"Yes?""

A man's voice spoke.

"Mr. Carter, this is Detective Hayes.""

Daniel put the call on speaker.

"Where is Lily?""

Hayes laughed.

"She's perfectly safe.""

I leaned forward.

"Let me speak to my daughter.""

"Not yet.""

"What do you want?""

"The original ledger. Richard knows where it is.""

Richard stepped closer.

"Tell Victor I want to speak to him.""

Hayes laughed again.

"Victor doesn't negotiate with ghosts.""

Richard's jaw tightened.

"I've been hiding for eleven years. I'm done hiding.""

There was a pause.

Then Hayes said:

"Come through the front entrance. All of you.""

The call ended.

Daniel looked at me.

"That sounded too easy.""

Sarah nodded.

"They want us inside.""

I opened the car door.

Daniel grabbed my sleeve.

"Michael, wait.""

He pointed toward the roof.

A second security camera was hidden beneath the gutter.

"They're watching every movement.""

I looked at the house.

"Then let's give them something to watch.""

We approached the front entrance together.

The door opened before we knocked.

A man in a dark suit stood inside.

"Mr. Carter. Mr.

Carter. And Mrs. Carter.""

He looked at Sarah.

"Welcome back.""

I stepped forward.

"Where's my daughter?""

"Mr. Hale is waiting.""

He led us into a large sitting room.

The walls were decorated with expensive paintings. A crystal chandelier hung above a polished wooden table.

Then I saw it.

My mother's wedding photograph.

It was sitting on the mantelpiece.

I approached slowly.

Someone had placed a small black ribbon around its frame.

Sarah stood beside me.

"Michael?""

I touched the photograph.

"Why would Victor keep this?""

Richard answered quietly.

"Because your mother worked for him before she discovered what he was doing.""

A door opened.

Victor Hale entered.

He was in his sixties, with silver hair and an expensive suit.

He smiled as though we were old friends.

"Richard. I wondered when you'd finally come out of hiding.""

Richard stepped forward.

"You took everything from my family.""

Victor poured himself a drink.

"Your family made some very unfortunate decisions.""

I moved toward him.

"Where is Lily?""

Victor glanced at me.

"Straight to business. I like that.""

He nodded toward the hallway.

Two men appeared, bringing Lily into the room.

"Daddy!""

She ran toward me.

I rushed forward, but one of the men grabbed her shoulder.

"Not so fast.""

Lily began crying.

"Please! Daddy!""

I clenched my fists.

"Let her go.""

Victor raised one hand.

"Give me the ledger, and your daughter walks out of here.""

Richard stepped forward.

"The ledger doesn't belong to you.""

Victor smiled.

"Neither did the money you stole.""

Daniel interrupted.

"The money was held in protected accounts. You transferred it illegally.""

Victor laughed.

"That's a very interesting interpretation.""

He turned toward Sarah.

"And you. After all this time.""

Sarah stared at him.

"You killed Eleanor.""

Victor's expression barely changed.

"Your mother-in-law was an unfortunate complication.""

Richard lunged forward.

Two men restrained him.

I stepped between them.

"Don't touch him!""

Victor calmly placed his glass on the table.

"Michael, your father has spent eleven years pretending to be dead. Your wife has spent two years pretending to be dead. And somehow, you still believe you're the innocent man in this room.""

I looked at him.

"What are you talking about?""

Victor reached into his jacket and removed a document.

He placed it on the table.

It was a copy of a property deed.

My name appeared at the bottom.

I stared.

"This is my childhood home.""

Victor nodded.

"Your father transferred ownership to you shortly before his disappearance.""

Richard looked confused.

"I never signed that.""

Victor smiled.

"Of course you didn't.""

He turned the document around.

The signature was mine.

But I had never signed it.

Daniel examined the date.

Then he looked at Victor.

"This was filed eleven years ago.""

Victor nodded.

"Exactly.""

He looked directly at me.

"Your father didn't simply disappear, Michael. He arranged for his son to inherit the company assets.""

I shook my head.

"What assets?""

Victor's smile widened.

"Everything.""

Then he placed another document on the table.

It was a trust agreement bearing my signature.

And beneath it was the name of the person who had witnessed it.

My mother.

Eleanor Carter.

I stared at the date.

The document had been signed two days after her funeral.

My mother had supposedly been dead.

But her signature was there.

I turned toward Richard.

He looked devastated.

"Michael, I swear I didn't know.""

Victor leaned back.

"Perhaps your father should explain why your mother's signature appears on a document dated after her death.""

I looked at him.

"You're lying.""

Victor smiled.

"Then ask your father where your mother really went.""

Richard's face crumpled.

May you like

And finally, after eleven years, he whispered:

"She's alive.""
