Chapter 3: The Recording Sarah Left Behind

I didn't sleep that night.

Lily finally fell asleep in my bed, her pink hat resting beside her pillow.

Every few minutes, she moved in her sleep and reached for the little pink hairbrush on the nightstand.

I watched her tiny hand touch it.

Then I looked at the blue USB drive.

Sarah had left it behind for a reason.

And I was terrified of what I might discover.

At 7:15 the next morning, Daniel arrived.

He brought his laptop, a portable evidence reader, and two cups of coffee.

He looked exhausted.

"Did you tell Vanessa about this?""

"No.""

"Good. Keep it that way.""

We sat in the dining room.

I placed the USB drive on the table.

Daniel examined it without inserting it into his personal computer.

"Sarah knew what she was doing," he said.

"She left this in a place where someone would have to know her habits to find it.""

"She knew something was going to happen.""

"Possibly.""

"Dan, she was my wife. I should have noticed.""

He looked at me.

"Don't do that to yourself. Whoever did this wanted you to believe a story. They knew exactly how to make it convincing.""

He connected the drive to an isolated laptop.

There were four files.

Three photographs.

One audio recording.

The first photograph showed Sarah standing outside a medical office.

The second showed her speaking with a woman wearing a gray coat.

The third was a picture of a bank statement.

Daniel opened the audio file.

For several seconds, there was only static.

Then Sarah's voice filled the room.

"Michael, if you're listening to this, something has happened to me.""

I grabbed the edge of the table.

Her voice.

After two years, I could hear her again.

"I wanted to tell you everything. I tried several times, but I was afraid. Not for myself. For you and Lily.""

I covered my mouth.

The recording continued.

"There's a man who has been taking money from people through a company called Carter Family Holdings. He used my signature to approve transactions I never authorized.""

Daniel glanced at me.

"That company name mean anything?""

I shook my head.

Sarah continued.

"I found out that someone had opened an account using our family information. When I asked questions, Detective Hayes contacted me. He told me to stop investigating.""

A pause followed.

Then her voice became quieter.

"He said I didn't understand who I was dealing with.""

I felt sick.

"Why didn't she tell me?"" I whispered.

Daniel didn't answer.

The recording continued.

"Michael, I discovered something else. The money isn't the worst part. Someone has been using Lily's identity.""

Daniel immediately paused the recording.

"Wait.""

"What?""

"Your daughter?""

I nodded.

He replayed that sentence.

Sarah had said someone was using Lily's identity.

I thought about the documents in the keepsake box.

The letters. The necklace. The paperwork.

"What could they possibly want from a six-year-old?""

Daniel opened the photograph of the bank statement.

A series of deposits appeared under an account bearing Lily's full name.

There were transfers totaling nearly $480,000.

I stared at the screen.

"That's impossible.""

Daniel scrolled down.

"Look at the account opening date.""

It was dated six weeks after Sarah's death.

The authorized guardian was listed as Michael Carter.

My signature appeared beneath it.

But I had never opened that account.

I felt dizzy.

"Someone forged my signature.""

Daniel nodded.

"Someone wanted legal control over money held in your daughter's name.""

"Who?""

He examined the document.

"The account was opened through a financial institution in Tennessee.""

I remembered the shipping receipt.

Nashville.

The same destination.

Before I could say anything, we heard footsteps in the hallway.

Vanessa appeared in the doorway wearing a silk robe.

"What are you two doing?""

Daniel calmly closed the laptop.

"Just talking.""

Vanessa looked at the USB drive.

"What's that?""

I slipped it into my pocket.

"Nothing.""

She narrowed her eyes.

"Michael, we need to discuss yesterday.""

"Not now.""

"Actually, now. You assaulted me. Do you understand how serious that is?""

Daniel stood up.

"Perhaps you should speak to an attorney before making any decisions.""

Vanessa looked irritated.

"This is between my husband and me.""

Daniel picked up his coffee.

"Then perhaps you should explain why you sold his dead wife's belongings to a police detective.""

Her face went completely still.

For one brief second, I saw genuine fear.

Then she laughed.

"I have no idea what you're talking about.""

Daniel placed his phone on the table and played the security footage.

Vanessa watched herself hand the box to Hayes.

Her lips parted.

"That's not what it looks like.""

I stood up.

"Then explain it.""

She glanced at the hallway.

"Not in front of him.""

"Explain it now.""

Vanessa took a step toward me.

"Michael, you need to understand. I was trying to protect you.""

"From what?""

"Sarah.""

I stared at her.

"Sarah is dead.""

Vanessa's expression changed.

"Exactly.""

She reached into her robe pocket and pulled out her phone.

I noticed her fingers trembling.

"Michael, there are things about your first wife you never knew.""

"Then tell me.""

She shook her head.

"I can't.""

"Why?""

"Because Hayes said if I told you, he'd destroy both of us.""

Daniel moved closer.

"Where is the envelope Sarah left for Michael?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"It's gone.""

"Where?""

She looked directly at me.

"Hayes has it.""

My stomach dropped.

"Why does he want that letter?""

Vanessa swallowed.

"Because it contains the name of the person who arranged Sarah's accident.""

I couldn't move.

Daniel stepped forward.

"Who arranged it?""

Vanessa opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, her phone rang.

The name on the screen was ROBERT HAYES.

She stared at it.

I held out my hand.

"Answer it.""

She shook her head.

"Michael, please...""

"ANSWER IT!""

Vanessa finally pressed the green button.

A man's voice came through the speaker.

"Vanessa, we have a problem. Carter found the recording, didn't he?""

Nobody moved.

Then Hayes continued.

"Listen carefully. Forget what we agreed. The girl cannot stay in that house another night.""

I looked toward the hallway.

Lily was awake.

She was standing at the top of the stairs, holding her pink hairbrush.

And she had heard everything.

"Daddy?"" she whispered.

I turned toward her.

"Sweetheart, go back to your room.""

But Lily slowly shook her head.

Then she said something that made both Daniel and me go completely still.

"Daddy, I know that man's voice.""

I knelt at the bottom of the stairs.

"What do you mean, baby?""

Lily's little fingers tightened around the hairbrush.

"He's the man who came to our house when Mommy was still alive.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"When did you see him?""

She looked at Vanessa.

Then she looked back at me.

"That night Mommy told me to hide in the closet.""

She started crying.

"She said if I heard the man shouting, I shouldn't come out.""

I reached for her.

"Did you see him, sweetheart?""

Lily nodded.

Then she whispered the words that changed everything.

"Daddy, he wasn't alone.""

May you like

She pointed directly at Vanessa.

"She was there too.""
