Chapter 8: The Truth About My Mother's Death
I couldn't process what my father had just said.
My mother had died when I was seventeen.
The official explanation had been complications following a sudden illness.
My father had handled everything.
The hospital arrangements.
The funeral.
The paperwork.
I had never questioned him.
Now he was telling me that my mother had been murdered.
"You're lying," I whispered.
Richard shook his head.
"I wish I were.""
I looked at Sarah.
"Did you know?""
She nodded slowly.
"I found the evidence eighteen months before the accident.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because your father begged me not to.""
I turned toward Richard.
"You had no right to keep this from me.""
He accepted the accusation without defending himself.
"You're right.""
Daniel walked toward the table.
"Let's start from the beginning. What happened to your mother?""
Richard pulled out a chair.
"Her name was Eleanor Carter. She worked as an accountant for a company that managed private investment trusts.""
I sat opposite him.
"She told me she worked in administration.""
"That was the cover. She discovered that several executives were moving money out of protected accounts belonging to children and deceased clients.""
I remembered something.
My mother used to spend hours working at the dining table after dinner.
She would spread documents everywhere and tell me not to touch them.
One night, I had asked why she looked so worried.
She had smiled and said she was checking numbers.
Richard continued.
"She found evidence of a massive fraud operation. She planned to report it. A week later, she was dead.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Who was involved?""
"Three people. A businessman named Victor Hale, Detective Robert Hayes, and someone inside the financial institution.""
Sarah placed a document on the table.
"There's a fourth person.""
Richard looked at her.
She continued.
"Vanessa.""
I turned sharply.
"What?""
Sarah pulled out a photograph.
It showed a younger Vanessa standing beside Victor Hale.
"Vanessa worked for Hale before she met Michael. She helped move documents and coordinate payments.""
My hands curled into fists.
"She approached me deliberately?""
Sarah nodded.
"She knew who you were. She knew about Lily's trust. She knew you had inherited your mother's remaining assets.""
I remembered meeting Vanessa at a charity event.
She had approached me first.
She had known my name.
She had even mentioned that she admired how devoted I was to Lily.
All those moments had suddenly become suspicious.
"Why marry me?"" I asked.
Richard answered.
"Because you controlled the last remaining account connected to your mother's investigation.""
Daniel opened the folder.
"How much money are we talking about?""
Sarah gave him a figure.
"Approximately twelve million dollars.""
Daniel looked up.
"That's substantial.""
"Your mother had traced the original transfers," Sarah explained.
"But she never managed to recover the money. After her death, the documents disappeared.""
I stared at the papers.
"And you found them?""
"Part of them.""
Sarah walked toward a cabinet and removed a small metal box.
Inside were photographs, bank statements, and a letter.
She handed me the letter.
The handwriting was my mother's.
I recognized it immediately.
My fingers trembled as I unfolded the paper.
My darling Michael,
If you are reading this, I hope you are old enough to understand that some people will do terrible things for money.
I wanted to protect you from the ugliness of this world.
But if I cannot, remember this: Never trust a person who asks you to forget where you came from.
I stopped reading.
My eyes filled with tears.
For the first time in twenty years, I could hear my mother's voice in my head.
I continued.
There is something I have kept from you. Your father knows about it. He has promised to protect you, but I am no longer certain he can.
The key to everything is hidden in the place where your father buried my wedding dress.
I looked up.
"Where is it?""
Richard's face had gone pale.
"In our old house.""
"The house where I grew up?""
He nodded.
"But there's a problem.""
"What?""
"Victor Hale owns the property now.""
Daniel stood.
"How did he get it?""
Richard looked at the floor.
"I sold it.""
I stared at him.
"You sold my mother's house to the man responsible for her death?""
"I needed money to keep Sarah hidden.""
Sarah interrupted.
"Richard, that's not the whole truth.""
My father closed his eyes.
"Sarah...""
She turned toward me.
"Your father didn't simply sell the house. He made a deal with Hale.""
"What deal?""
Richard finally spoke.
"I gave him the location of the original documents in exchange for Sarah's safety.""
I stepped backward.
"You betrayed her?""
"I thought I was saving her!""
Sarah's eyes filled with tears.
"You gave him the first half of the evidence. He used it to find me.""
Richard slammed his hand against the table.
"I didn't know he would arrange the accident!""
I stared at him.
"Then why did you let us believe Sarah was dead?""
He looked at me.
"Because Hayes threatened to kill Lily.""
Silence swallowed the room.
Sarah walked toward me.
"Michael, I wanted to come home. I wanted to hold our daughter. I wanted to watch her grow up.""
Her voice broke.
"But every time I got close, someone reminded me that Lily was the only thing they could use to control me.""
I looked at her.
"Did you really make that phone call?""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
"Why didn't you say more?""
"Because Hayes was standing beside me.""
I felt sick.
Then Daniel opened another document.
"There's something that doesn't add up.""
Everyone turned toward him.
He pointed at the original trust agreement.
"The emergency guardian designation was signed six weeks before Sarah's accident.""
Sarah nodded.
"I signed it.""
I stared at her.
"You appointed Vanessa as Lily's emergency guardian?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
Sarah looked toward Richard.
"Because I needed someone inside the operation who could help me recover the documents.""
I couldn't believe it.
"You trusted Vanessa?""
"I believed she was working with me.""
"Then why did she shave Lily's head? Why did she destroy everything?""
Sarah's face hardened.
"Because she changed sides.""
Daniel examined the signature.
"There's another problem. This document was modified after Sarah signed it.""
He placed two copies side by side.
The original named Vanessa as an emergency contact only.
The altered version gave her temporary financial authority over Lily's trust.
I stared at the papers.
"So someone changed the agreement.""
Richard nodded.
"Hayes.""
Then Sarah reached into her pocket and removed a photograph.
It showed Vanessa standing beside a man outside a bank.
The man was holding a briefcase.
I recognized him.
It was Victor Hale.
Sarah turned the photograph over.
"Michael, this was taken yesterday.""
I looked at the date.
Then I noticed the handwritten message beneath it.
*THE TRANSFER WILL BE COMPLETED TOMORROW.*
Daniel checked his watch.
His expression changed.
"Tomorrow is the deadline for Lily's trust.""
I looked at Sarah.
"What happens if they complete the transfer?""
She swallowed.
"They gain permanent control of the money.""
"And Lily?""
Sarah looked directly into my eyes.
"They gain control of her identity, too.""
Before anyone could respond, a loud crash came from the front of the house.
The windows shook.
Richard rushed toward the curtains.
A black SUV had stopped outside.
Two men were getting out.
May you like
One of them was Robert Hayes.
And he was holding a photograph of Lily.
