Chapter 9: Danielle's Mother Finally Speaks
I drove to Florida the following morning.
Daniel insisted on coming with me.
We arranged for Noah to stay with Robert, and I made sure his school knew that Vanessa and Ethan were not authorized to collect him.
Before leaving Atlanta, I visited Noah.
He was sitting on Robert's living room floor, building a tower out of wooden blocks.
"Daddy!""
He ran toward me.
I picked him up.
"Hey, champ.""
"Are you going away?""
"Just for a little while.""
"To find Mommy's secret?""
I swallowed.
"Something like that.""
He looked at me seriously.
"Will it make Vanessa stop being mean?""
I kissed his forehead.
"I'm going to make sure nobody hurts you again.""
He wrapped his arms around my neck.
"Mommy would be proud of you.""
I couldn't answer.
I simply held him a little longer.
Eleanor's address belonged to a quiet house near Sarasota.
When we arrived, an elderly woman opened the door.
Her hair was silver, and she wore Danielle's favorite blue cardigan.
She looked at me for several seconds.
Then her eyes filled with tears.
"Marcus.""
"Eleanor.""
She stepped aside.
"Come in.""
The house smelled of cinnamon and old books.
Photographs of Danielle covered the hallway.
There were pictures of her as a little girl, a teenager, a bride, and finally a mother holding Noah.
I stopped in front of the last one.
She was smiling.
A genuine smile.
The kind I'd almost forgotten.
Eleanor approached quietly.
"She loved that little boy more than anything.""
"I know.""
She looked at me.
"Do you?""
I turned.
"What does that mean?""
She wiped her eyes.
"Danielle called me three weeks before she died. She told me she was frightened. She said Ethan and Vanessa were trying to take Noah.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because Ethan convinced me that you already knew.""
"What?""
"He told me you were involved in the financial arrangements. He said Danielle was becoming paranoid and that you wanted her to sign the documents before she became more difficult.""
I stared at her.
"That's a lie.""
"I know that now.""
She led us into the living room.
On the table sat an old leather handbag.
"This belonged to Danielle.""
I recognized it.
She had carried it almost every day.
Eleanor opened the bag and removed a small notebook.
"I found this among her belongings after the funeral. I never gave it to you because I was afraid.""
"Afraid of what?""
She looked toward the window.
"That the people who caused her death would come after Noah.""
Daniel sat forward.
"Mrs. Carter, do you have evidence of wrongdoing?""
Eleanor nodded.
"Danielle gave me copies of the documents she found. I also have something Ethan doesn't know about.""
She opened the notebook.
Inside were handwritten dates, account numbers, and names.
One page contained a list of payments made to someone at Grady Memorial Hospital.
The final entry was dated the day Danielle died.
The recipient's name was Angela Morris.
The same nurse Patricia had identified.
I felt sick.
"How much?""
Eleanor showed me the amount.
Twenty-five thousand dollars.
Daniel photographed the page.
"Do you know what this payment was for?""
Eleanor shook her head.
"But Danielle wrote something beneath it.""
I leaned closer.
Payment for medication authorization and removal of original chart.
My hands went cold.
There was more.
Another entry referenced a second payment.
This one had been sent to a company registered in Delaware.
The company name was unfamiliar.
Daniel searched his phone.
His expression changed.
"Marcus, this company owns the holding account that received the missing construction shares.""
I stared at him.
"Who owns it?""
He looked at Eleanor.
Then back at me.
"The registered director is Vanessa Carter.""
I sat down heavily.
The entire arrangement had been designed around one objective.
Steal the company.
Control Noah's inheritance.
And remove anyone who could stop them.
But Eleanor wasn't finished.
She opened a drawer and removed a sealed envelope.
"Danielle asked me to give you this only when you had proof that Ethan and Vanessa were working together.""
I opened it.
Inside was a letter written in Danielle's handwriting.
My love,
If you're reading this, I'm sorry I couldn't tell you everything while I was alive.
I know you trust Ethan. I know he's your brother. But he has been stealing from your father for years.
I also know Vanessa has been watching our family.
I stopped.
Then I read the next paragraph.
There is one thing I haven't told you. Noah's birth wasn't the beginning of Ethan's interest in our family. He has been trying to control the company since before we were married.
My hands shook.
Danielle continued:
I found out why.
Your father discovered that Ethan had secretly sold company property and falsified financial statements. He planned to report him. But before he could, he became seriously ill.
I looked at Daniel.
He nodded.
"That could explain the trust.""
I continued reading.
Your father didn't die believing Ethan was innocent. He knew exactly what his son had done.
Then came the final paragraph.
Marcus, there is someone else involved. Someone who has been helping Ethan since the beginning. Someone you would never suspect.
I turned the page.
There was a name.
My stomach dropped.
It was the name of the person who had managed my father's estate after his death.
My father's attorney.
Richard Coleman.
Daniel stared at the page.
"That's impossible.""
"Do you know him?""
Daniel nodded slowly.
"Richard was my mentor. He retired three years ago.""
Eleanor suddenly stood.
"There's more.""
She walked toward a cabinet and removed a small wooden box.
Inside were several photographs.
One showed Ethan and Richard shaking hands.
Another showed Vanessa entering Richard's office.
The third was different.
It showed Richard standing outside Danielle's hospital room.
The date was the day she died.
I stared at the photograph.
"Why was he there?""
Eleanor's voice trembled.
"Because he brought the documents Danielle refused to sign.""
Daniel picked up the photograph.
"These could change everything.""
Eleanor nodded.
Then she handed me a final piece of paper.
It was a copy of a letter Richard had sent Danielle.
The message was short.
You have until Friday to sign the revised trust documents. After that, I cannot guarantee what happens to your husband or your son.
I read it twice.
Then my phone rang.
The caller ID showed my brother's name.
I answered.
Ethan didn't bother with a greeting.
"Marcus, I know you're in Florida.""
I looked at Daniel.
"How?""
"Because you've been asking questions about Richard.""
I remained silent.
Ethan's voice became colder.
"Listen carefully. You're making a terrible mistake.""
"Is that a threat?""
"No. It's advice.""
"Then give me some.""
He paused.
"Come home. Bring the USB. And stop pretending Danielle was innocent.""
I tightened my grip on the phone.
"Why? What did she do?""
Ethan laughed softly.
"Because if you keep digging, you'll discover that Danielle wasn't just trying to protect Noah.""
"Then what was she doing?""
His answer was almost a whisper.
"She was trying to expose the truth about Noah's biological father.""
I stopped breathing.
I looked at Daniel.
Then at Eleanor.
Neither of them moved.
Ethan continued.
"And Marcus, there's a reason your father wanted that boy to inherit everything.""
The call ended.
I stared at Danielle's letter.
For two years, I'd believed Noah was my son in every possible way.
I'd raised him.
I'd held him.
I'd loved him through the worst days of my life.
But now my brother was suggesting something that could turn everything I believed upside down.
May you like
And when Eleanor finally spoke, her words were even more devastating.
"Marcus, there's something about Noah's birth that Danielle never told you.""
