Chapter 2: The Secret Danielle Left Behind
I didn't take Noah to school that morning.
Instead, I called his teacher, explained that we had a family emergency, and told her I would come in to discuss the letter.
Then I took my son upstairs.
Vanessa followed us.
"Marcus, you're being ridiculous. You're going to make him think he's done something wrong.""
I turned around.
"Go downstairs, Vanessa.""
"This is my house too.""
"And he's my son.""
She opened her mouth, but something in my expression made her stop.
I closed Noah's bedroom door.
He sat on the edge of his bed, holding the red truck.
"Am I in trouble, Daddy?""
I sat beside him.
"Absolutely not.""
"Promise?""
"I promise.""
He looked at the truck.
"Mommy said I should only open it when something felt wrong.""
My throat tightened.
Danielle had been a careful woman. She labeled everything, kept important documents in folders, and wrote little notes for Noah whenever she traveled.
But she had never mentioned hiding anything inside a toy.
"Can you show me?""
Noah turned the truck upside down.
There was a tiny metal latch beneath the plastic chassis.
I pressed it.
A small compartment clicked open.
Inside was a USB drive wrapped in a piece of blue fabric.
My hands began shaking.
I recognized the fabric.
It came from Danielle's favorite silk scarf.
Noah watched me carefully.
"Mommy said you would know what to do.""
I swallowed.
"Did she tell you anything else?""
He nodded.
"She said if someone ever made me feel unwanted, I should find the truck and give it to you.""
I closed my eyes.
For two years, I'd believed I understood everything about Danielle's final months.
Apparently, I understood nothing.
I carried the USB downstairs.
Vanessa was standing beside the kitchen island, typing furiously on her phone.
When she saw the device, her face went pale.
"Where did you get that?""
"From Noah's truck.""
She immediately held out her hand.
"Give it to me.""
"No.""
"Marcus, listen to me. You have no idea what you're doing.""
"Then explain it.""
She looked toward the staircase.
"Not in front of the children.""
I placed the USB beside my laptop.
"Then you should have thought about that before trying to take it from him.""
I plugged it in.
A folder appeared.
There were six video files, three photographs, and a document titled:
*FOR MARCUS. OPEN WHEN YOU ARE READY.*
My breathing became shallow.
I clicked the first video.
Danielle appeared on the screen.
She was sitting on our bedroom floor, wearing the blue sweater I'd bought her for our anniversary.
Her eyes were red.
"Marcus," she whispered.
"If you're watching this, I hope I'm wrong about everything.""
I leaned closer.
She looked directly into the camera.
"I need you to listen carefully. Don't confront Vanessa until you've watched all the recordings.""
My stomach tightened.
Behind me, I heard footsteps.
Vanessa stood in the doorway.
The moment she saw Danielle's face on the screen, she grabbed the edge of the doorframe.
"No.""
I didn't turn around.
Danielle continued.
"I discovered that someone has been entering our home when you're at work. At first, I thought I was imagining things. Then I found messages on an old tablet.""
She paused, wiping her eyes.
"The person I found wasn't a stranger, Marcus.""
My fingers went numb.
Danielle lifted a photograph.
It showed Vanessa standing outside our house.
Beside her stood a man wearing a dark jacket.
I knew that face.
I had grown up with it.
It belonged to my younger brother, Ethan.
"That's impossible," I whispered.
Ethan had helped me arrange Danielle's funeral. He had held my shoulder when I couldn't stop crying.
He had even volunteered to help me move on after her death.
Danielle's voice continued.
"Ethan told me he was worried about you. He said you were working too much, that you needed someone to help with Noah. He introduced me to Vanessa.""
I turned toward my wife.
She was shaking her head.
"Turn it off.""
I ignored her.
"Then I discovered they were meeting without you. They were discussing money. Your business. The house.""
Danielle held up another document.
"I found a transfer request from our joint account. Someone tried to move two hundred thousand dollars.""
My stomach dropped.
That money had been part of the life insurance settlement after Danielle died.
I remembered Ethan advising me to consolidate my accounts.
I remembered signing several documents without reading every page because I was barely functioning.
Danielle leaned closer to the camera.
"Marcus, I think they're working together. And I think Ethan wants to replace me in your life with someone he can control.""
The video ended.
I sat motionless.
Behind me, Vanessa whispered, "She was paranoid.""
I turned.
"Why were you meeting my brother before Danielle died?""
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
"She misunderstood.""
"Answer me.""
"We were friends.""
"Friends?""
"Yes!""
"Then why did she think you were stealing from us?""
Vanessa's expression changed.
"Because Danielle was unstable. She was sick, Marcus. She imagined things.""
I stood so quickly that my chair fell backward.
"Don't you dare speak about my wife like that.""
Vanessa flinched.
Then her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
I saw the name before she could hide it.
*ETHAN.*
She rejected the call.
A second later, a message appeared.
I read it over her shoulder.
Did you find the truck? If Marcus has the USB, we're finished.
The kitchen seemed to tilt.
I reached for my phone.
"Who else knows about that truck?""
Vanessa backed away.
"Marcus, please.""
My phone rang.
It was Ethan.
I answered without saying hello.
His voice came through immediately.
"Marcus, listen to me. Whatever Vanessa tells you, don't believe her.""
I stared at my wife.
May you like
Then Ethan said something that made my blood run cold.
"Danielle wasn't supposed to die before she signed the papers.""
