Chapter 14: The Man Who Wanted My Son
The Riverside warehouse looked exactly as I remembered it.
Rust covered the metal doors.
The windows were dusty.
Weeds had grown through cracks in the concrete.
I arrived at 10:55 a.m.
I wasn't alone.
The investigator was parked two blocks away, monitoring the entrance. Daniel had also contacted the authorities about the suspicious financial activity.
I walked inside.
A man stood near an old workbench.
He wore a dark coat and held a photograph.
The same photograph I'd received the night before.
He turned.
"Marcus.""
I recognized his face immediately.
Michael.
Older than in Danielle's pictures, but unmistakably the same man.
"Where have you been?""
He looked down.
"That's a long story.""
"Then start talking.""
He placed the photograph on the workbench.
It showed Danielle holding newborn Noah.
"I loved her," he said.
I felt my jaw tighten.
"You don't get to talk about love.""
"I know.""
"You let her believe you were dead.""
Michael nodded.
"I had no choice.""
"Everyone has a choice.""
He looked at me.
"Ethan threatened to kill her if I came back.""
I laughed bitterly.
"And you believed him?""
"I had already seen what he was capable of.""
"Then you should have gone to the police.""
"I tried.""
Michael opened his coat and removed a small folder.
Inside were copies of police reports, insurance documents, and photographs of a damaged vehicle.
"My car went off the road after I discovered Ethan had been moving money through the company. The police classified it as an accident.""
I examined the photographs.
The car was badly damaged.
"How did you survive?""
"Someone pulled me out before it caught fire. I spent weeks in a private clinic. By the time I recovered, Ethan had convinced everyone I was dead.""
"Who helped you disappear?""
Michael looked away.
"Richard Coleman.""
I wasn't surprised.
"Of course.""
Michael continued.
"Richard told me that if I returned, Ethan would destroy Danielle and take Noah.""
I stepped closer.
"So you abandoned them?""
"I thought disappearing would protect them.""
"Danielle died believing you were gone.""
His face crumpled.
"I know.""
"She raised Noah without you.""
"I know.""
"She was frightened, Michael. She was fighting people who wanted to steal from her family.""
He lowered his head.
"I know.""
I wanted to hit him.
But I needed answers.
"Why did you contact me?""
Michael opened another folder.
"Because Ethan has been trying to access Noah's trust again. But this time, he's working with Richard and Vanessa to claim that the original trust was invalid.""
"Why?""
"Because Noah's inheritance contains something much more valuable than money.""
He placed a document on the workbench.
It was a property ownership record.
The company owned several parcels of land outside Atlanta.
One of them had recently been valued at more than thirty million dollars.
I stared at the figure.
"Why does Noah own this?""
"Your father bought the land years ago. He knew a major development project was coming. He placed the property in Noah's trust so nobody could sell it without the trustee's approval.""
I looked at Michael.
"And Ethan wants it.""
"Yes.""
"Why didn't you tell Danielle?""
"I did. She refused to believe me.""
I laughed.
"Good for her.""
Michael reached into his pocket and produced a small recorder.
"Your father recorded our final conversation. It proves Ethan planned to take control of the trust.""
He pressed play.
My father's voice filled the warehouse.
"Michael, you have one chance to tell me the truth.""
Michael's younger voice answered.
"Ethan promised me the shares.""
"Those shares belong to Noah.""
"Then change the trust.""
"I won't.""
A pause.
Then my father spoke again.
"Did you know Danielle was being threatened?""
Michael answered quietly.
"Yes.""
My stomach tightened.
My father continued.
"And did you help Ethan?""
Michael didn't answer.
Then he finally whispered:
"I gave him the hospital authorization forms.""
I stopped breathing.
My father's voice became furious.
"You helped him access her medical records?""
"I didn't know he would use them that way.""
"Did you know he was changing her medication?""
"No.""
"Did you know Vanessa was arranging payments to the nurse?""
Michael began crying.
"I found out afterward.""
The recording ended.
I stared at him.
"You helped them.""
Michael nodded.
"I made the worst mistake of my life.""
"You didn't just make a mistake. You helped build the situation that killed Danielle.""
He looked at me.
"I know.""
Then he opened another envelope.
Inside was a signed statement.
"I've agreed to testify against Ethan, Vanessa, and Richard. I can provide the original bank records.""
I stared at him.
"Why now?""
"Because Ethan has been threatening Noah.""
I stepped closer.
"How do you know?""
Michael pulled out his phone.
He showed me a message from Vanessa.
If Marcus doesn't cooperate, we'll take the boy. You know what happens next.
I felt my blood turn cold.
Michael continued.
"I know I don't deserve to call myself his father. But I won't let Ethan hurt him.""
I looked at him.
"You're right about one thing. You don't deserve to call yourself his father.""
He lowered his eyes.
I took the signed statement.
"You're going to give this to the authorities. You're going to tell them everything.""
He nodded.
"And Noah?""
I stared at him.
"You don't contact him. You don't approach him. You don't send him gifts. You don't use him to make yourself feel better.""
Michael swallowed.
"Understood.""
I turned toward the exit.
Then he spoke again.
"Marcus.""
I stopped.
"There's one more thing.""
I looked back.
"Danielle left something for you. Richard has it.""
"What?""
Michael handed me a small photograph.
It showed Danielle sitting beside my father in the hospital shortly before his death.
On the back, she'd written:
The truth about your father is in the final page of his will.
I frowned.
"My father's will was settled years ago.""
Michael shook his head.
"Not completely. There was a sealed amendment.""
"Where is it?""
"Richard has been keeping it.""
My phone rang.
The investigator.
"Marcus, you need to get out of there.""
"What happened?""
"Police have arrested Vanessa.""
I exhaled.
"Good.""
But the investigator continued.
"Your brother is missing. And Richard Coleman has just filed an emergency application claiming Noah isn't legally entitled to the inheritance.""
I stared at Michael.
He looked terrified.
Then my phone received a photograph.
It showed Ethan standing outside Robert's house.
The message beneath it contained six words.

Your son will be mine by tonight.
I ran.
