Chapter 13: The Father Who Came Back From the Dead

I stared at the photograph until the screen went dark.

Michael was alive.

The man Danielle had supposedly lost years ago had been standing outside a house that morning, holding a photograph of Noah.

I called Margaret again.

"Tell me everything you know about Michael.""

Her voice trembled.

"Your father discovered that Michael had been involved in Ethan's financial schemes long before Danielle became pregnant. Michael helped him move money between companies.""

"Why?""

"Because Ethan promised him a share of the construction business.""

I rubbed my forehead.

"And Danielle?""

"Michael fell in love with her. But he was already deeply involved with Ethan. When Danielle discovered the financial fraud, Michael became frightened.""

"Did he try to stop it?""

"Yes. That's why Ethan arranged for everyone to believe he had died.""

I froze.

"You're saying his accident was staged?""

"I don't know whether the accident itself was staged. I only know that Michael survived and disappeared afterward.""

I looked at David.

He was listening carefully.

"Where has he been living?""

"Under the name Michael Reynolds. I don't know his current address.""

"Why did he contact me now?""

Margaret hesitated.

"Because Noah's inheritance becomes fully accessible when he turns eighteen. Michael believes he has a claim to it.""

I ended the call.

My first instinct was to return to the hotel and hold Noah.

My second was to find Michael.

I couldn't understand how a man who had supposedly died before Noah was born could suddenly appear in the middle of a conspiracy involving my brother, my wife, and my family's money.

I called Robert.

"Is Noah with you?""

"Yes. He's drawing pictures.""

"Keep him inside. Don't open the door for anyone.""

"Marcus, you're scaring me.""

"I'll explain when I get there.""

When I returned, Noah was sitting at the kitchen table.

He had drawn three people holding hands.

Me.

Him.

And Danielle.

I looked at the picture.

"That's beautiful, buddy.""

He smiled.

"Mommy is in the middle because she holds us together.""

I swallowed.

"You're right.""

He pointed toward the drawing.

"Can we visit her grave tomorrow?""

I nodded.

"Absolutely.""

Then he looked at me carefully.

"Daddy, are you mad at me?""

I crouched beside him.

"Why would I be mad at you?""

"Because everybody keeps talking about my real dad.""

I felt my heart stop.

"What?""

Noah looked toward Robert.

"Uncle Robert said someone was trying to find my real father.""

Robert immediately looked uncomfortable.

I took Noah's hands.

"Listen to me. Sometimes adults have complicated histories. But none of that is your fault.""

"Am I still your son?""

I pulled him into my arms.

"Nothing could ever change that.""

He hugged me tightly.

That evening, Daniel called.

I almost ignored it.

But I needed answers.

"Marcus, I heard you've been speaking with David Price.""

"How do you know that?""

"Richard contacted me. He's worried you're going to make a mistake.""

I laughed.

"Richard can worry about himself.""

Daniel sighed.

"I know you've lost trust in me.""

"You helped Ethan steal from my son.""

"I made a terrible decision. I won't deny that.""

"Then tell me something useful. Is Michael alive?""

Silence.

I gripped the phone.

"You knew?""

Daniel finally answered.

"I suspected it.""

"How long?""

"Since shortly after Danielle died.""

I closed my eyes.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because Michael contacted me through Richard. He threatened to expose the entire company if he didn't receive money.""

"And you paid him?""

Daniel didn't answer.

I felt sick.

"How much?""

"Forty thousand dollars.""

"From whose account?""

"An account connected to the old trust.""

I ended the call.

There was no point continuing.

Every person I had trusted seemed to have participated in some part of the deception.

At 10:17 that night, an email arrived.

No subject.

No greeting.

Just an address and a message.

*Tomorrow. 11:00 a.m. The old Riverside warehouse.

Come alone. I can explain what happened to Danielle.*

I knew the warehouse.

My father had used it to store construction equipment before selling the property.

I forwarded the message to the investigator.

Then I called Margaret.

She answered on the second ring.

"Mr. Williams?""

"Someone claiming to be Michael wants to meet me tomorrow.""

She went silent.

"Don't go.""

"Why?""

"Because Michael isn't the only person who knows about that warehouse.""

I stood.

"What do you mean?""

"Your father kept the original trust documents there. Ethan used to visit regularly.""

My stomach tightened.

"Is there something else hidden there?""

Margaret's voice dropped.

"Yes. A recording your father made before he died.""

"What does it contain?""

She hesitated.

"His final conversation with Michael.""

I looked toward Noah's bedroom.

"Do you know what they discussed?""

Margaret whispered:

"Your father asked Michael why he had agreed to help Ethan destroy Danielle's life.""

I closed my eyes.

Then she added:

"And Michael's answer was that he never intended Danielle to die.""

The call ended.

I stood in the dark living room, staring at the photograph of the man who had returned from the dead.

Tomorrow, I would finally meet him.

But I was beginning to understand that the truth about Danielle's death was only part of what he wanted.

May you like

Michael wanted Noah.

And I wasn't going to let him take my son.
