Chapter 3: My Brother's Confession
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
The kitchen clock ticked above the refrigerator.
A car passed outside.
Somewhere upstairs, Noah was playing with the toy dinosaurs we'd bought him last Christmas.
And my younger brother had just told me that my dead wife wasn't supposed to die before signing some papers.
"What papers, Ethan?""
Silence.
Then he cleared his throat.
"Marcus, you're taking that sentence out of context.""
"Explain it.""
"Not over the phone.""
"Then come here.""
"That's not a good idea.""
I looked at Vanessa.
She was standing near the back door, her phone clutched in both hands.
"Why? Afraid I'll ask you about the money?""
Ethan sighed.
"Listen, brother. Danielle was going through a difficult period. She didn't trust anyone. I was trying to help.""
"Help her do what?""
"Protect the family.""
I laughed bitterly.
"Which family? Mine or yours?""
He hung up.
I stood there holding the phone.
Vanessa approached slowly.
"Marcus, we need to talk.""
I turned toward her.
"We've been talking for two years. Apparently, you've been lying for two years too.""
She began crying.
Not the quiet, embarrassed crying I'd seen when she misplaced something or argued with her children.
This was different.
Her shoulders shook, and she pressed both hands against her face.
"I didn't want things to happen this way.""
"What things?""
"Danielle's accusations. Ethan's involvement. All of it.""
I stared at her.
"Did you know Ethan before Danielle died?""
She nodded.
"Yes.""
"How long?""
"Almost a year.""
My stomach twisted.
"How did you meet?""
"At a charity fundraiser.""
"And you just happened to become friends with my brother?""
"Marcus, please.""
"How long before Danielle died did you start coming to my house?""
She didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"How long?""
"Six months.""
Six months.
While Danielle was fighting for her health.
While I was working late, trying to keep our business afloat.
While Noah was sleeping in his mother's arms.
Vanessa had been standing outside my home with my brother.
I rubbed my forehead.
"Did Danielle know you were seeing Ethan?""
Vanessa nodded.
"She found out.""
"And what happened?""
"She confronted us.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"What do you mean, seeing each other?""
Vanessa looked down.
"We weren't together romantically.""
"Then what were you doing?""
"Ethan wanted to help me. He said you were wealthy, but your finances were complicated. He thought I could eventually become part of the family.""
I stared at her.
"Eventually?""
She wiped her cheeks.
"He said you needed someone. He said Danielle wasn't going to recover.""
The words struck like a slap.
"Danielle was my wife.""
"I know.""
"She was Noah's mother.""
"I know, Marcus!""
"Then how could you stand in my kitchen and tell my son that nobody had to make his lunch because his mother was dead?""
Vanessa looked away.
For once, she had no answer.
I picked up the crumpled teacher's note from the counter.
"How long has Noah been going hungry?""
She whispered, "I don't know.""
"You're the person who prepares his meals.""
"He isn't my responsibility.""
I stared at her.
"Then you shouldn't have married a man with a child.""
Her eyes hardened.
"Maybe you should have thought about that before bringing him into a house where two other children already live.""
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
At that moment, Noah appeared at the top of the stairs.
"Daddy?""
I immediately softened my voice.
"Hey, buddy. Everything okay?""
He held the wooden dinosaur Danielle had bought him.
"Can I have something to eat?""
My chest tightened.
"Of course. What would you like?""
"Just toast.""
I walked toward him.
"How about pancakes?""
He smiled faintly.
"With chocolate chips?""
"With as many chocolate chips as you want.""
I carried him into the kitchen and prepared breakfast.
Vanessa stood silently while I placed a plate in front of him.
Noah ate slowly.
He kept glancing at his stepmother.
Finally, he whispered, "Daddy?""
"Yes, buddy?""
"Can we go somewhere else?""
I put down my fork.
"Why?""
He looked at Vanessa.
"Because I don't like being here when you're gone.""
Vanessa slammed her palm against the counter.
"That is enough, Noah!""
He dropped his fork.
I immediately stood.
"Don't raise your voice at him.""
"He is manipulating you!""
"He's seven!""
"He knows exactly what he's doing!""
I took Noah's hand.
"Go upstairs and get your shoes, sweetheart.""
After he left, I faced Vanessa.
"You're not going to be alone with him anymore.""
She laughed through her tears.
"You can't just throw me out.""
"I haven't said anything about throwing you out.""
"Then what are you threatening me with?""
"I'm protecting my son.""
I collected the USB drive, the photographs, and Danielle's handwritten letter.
Then I called my attorney, Daniel Brooks.
He had handled my business contracts for eleven years and had known Danielle personally.
When he answered, I spoke quietly.
"Daniel, I need you to come over.""
"Is something wrong?""
I looked at Vanessa.
"Someone has been using my dead wife's name to hide financial fraud.""
There was a pause.
"Marcus, what exactly did you find?""
Before I could answer, someone knocked at the front door.
Three sharp knocks.
Vanessa went completely still.
I walked toward the entrance and opened it.
Ethan stood outside.
He wore a gray suit and carried a leather briefcase.
His eyes immediately moved past me toward the kitchen.
"Where's the USB?""
I didn't move.
"Hello to you too, brother.""
He swallowed.
"Marcus, we need to handle this privately.""
"You can start by explaining what papers Danielle was supposed to sign.""
Ethan glanced over my shoulder.
Then he noticed the photographs on the kitchen table.
His face drained of color.
"Where did you get those?""
"From my son's toy truck.""
He stepped inside without permission.
"Listen to me. Danielle was confused. She misunderstood everything.""
"Then why did you tell Vanessa that we were finished if I found the USB?""
Ethan froze.
I had him.
For the first time, my brother looked genuinely afraid.
Then he placed his briefcase on the table and slowly opened it.
Inside were bank statements, property documents, and a thick envelope bearing Danielle's signature.
"I came here because there's something you need to know," he said.
I picked up the envelope.
The date printed on it was three weeks before Danielle died.
Ethan looked directly into my eyes.
"Your wife didn't just leave you those videos, Marcus.""
He pointed toward the signature at the bottom of the document.
"She also changed her will.""
I opened the envelope.
The first page contained a sentence that made my knees weaken.
*If anything happens to me, my husband must never allow Ethan Williams to become Noah's legal guardian.*
But beneath that sentence was another name.
May you like
A name I had never expected to see.
*Vanessa Carter.*
