Chapter 9: The Girl in the Basement
I don't remember the drive to the Bennett estate.
I remember Detective Harris shouting instructions into his radio. I remember Anna gripping the dashboard so tightly that her knuckles turned white. I remember calling Vanessa three times before she finally answered again.
And I remember the words she whispered.
"They knew her name, Mark. They knew Lily's teacher, her classroom, even what she ate for breakfast. I thought they were sent to protect her.""
I pressed the phone against my ear.
"Did you see their vehicle?""
"A black SUV.""
"License plate?""
"I couldn't see it.""
"Which direction did they go?""
"Toward the highway.""
I closed my eyes.
"Vanessa, listen carefully. Don't leave the house. Don't touch anything. Detective Harris will send officers to you.""
"What about Lily?""
"We're bringing her home.""
I didn't know if that was true.
But I needed Vanessa to believe it.
The Bennett estate stood on a hill beyond the old mill, its stone walls barely visible behind a line of dark trees. Police vehicles surrounded the main gate. Officers moved through the gardens with flashlights, searching the grounds.
Detective Harris ordered us to remain behind the perimeter while his team entered.
I lasted thirty seconds.
Then I saw smoke rising from the east wing.
"Michael's down there," I said.
Harris grabbed my shoulder.
"Mark, stop.""
"I can't leave him!""
"We have officers inside.""
"And my daughter is missing!""
"Which is exactly why you need to let us do our jobs.""
I stared at the smoke.
Then I heard a faint, distant crash from somewhere beneath the house.
I broke away and ran toward the side entrance.
Anna followed me.
We reached a narrow service corridor just as two officers emerged, coughing.
"The basement is filling with smoke," one shouted.
"There's a fire in the generator room.""
"Did you find Michael?"" I demanded.
"Not yet.""
I pushed past them.
The corridor descended into darkness. Smoke curled along the ceiling, and the air tasted bitter. At the bottom of the stairs, a heavy wooden door stood half open.
Behind it, I heard a voice.
"Mark!""
Michael.
I lunged through the doorway.
My brother was chained to a metal pipe near the far wall. His shirt was soaked with sweat, and his face was streaked with soot. Beside him stood an older man in a dark suit.
My father.
Richard Bennett looked exactly as he had in my memories: silver hair, immaculate collar, and an expression of mild disappointment.
"You're late," he said.
I stopped.
For eight years, I'd imagined what I'd say if I ever saw him again. I'd pictured myself shouting, demanding answers, perhaps even striking him.
Instead, I stood there shaking.
"You did this.""
Richard glanced at the smoke drifting through the corridor.
"Michael has always been careless.""
"Unlock him.""
"Of course.""
He took a key from his pocket and tossed it onto the floor.
It skidded toward me.
"Go ahead, Mark. Save your brother.""
Something about his calmness frightened me.
I looked at Michael.
"Where's Lily?""
Michael's face changed.
"Mark, don't listen to him.""
"Where is my daughter?""
Richard smiled faintly.
"Somewhere safe.""
I lunged at him.
He stepped aside, and I slammed against the wall. Pain shot through my shoulder.
"You always were predictable," he said.
Michael strained against the chains.
"He's lying! Richard took her!""
Richard's smile vanished.
For the first time, I saw real anger in his face.
"Be quiet.""
Michael spat at his shoes.
"You don't get to tell me what to do anymore.""
Richard struck him across the face.
I surged forward, but Anna appeared behind me and caught my arm.
"Mark, the key!""
I grabbed it and rushed to Michael's restraints. My fingers slipped on the metal as I worked the lock.
"Hold still.""
"Mark," Michael gasped, "you have to listen.""
"Not now.""
"Yes, now!""
The lock clicked open.
Michael collapsed against me.
"Richard has another house. Beneath it is a private room where he keeps the original records. That's where he's taking Lily.""
Richard backed toward a second doorway.
"You have no idea what you're talking about.""
Michael laughed weakly.
"I heard you on the phone.""
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"Who did you speak to?""
"Your driver. The one you thought was loyal.""
For the first time, Richard looked uncertain.
Then a burst of flame lit the corridor behind him.
He turned and ran through the second doorway.
I started after him, but Michael caught my wrist.
"Don't!""
"He's getting away!""
"Mark, the room!""
A metal door stood behind a fallen cabinet. It was marked with a faded warning sign and secured by a heavy electronic lock.
Michael pointed toward it.
"That's where he kept the records.""
Anna rushed to the control panel.
"Can you open it?""
Michael shook his head.
"Not from here.""
I looked at the smoke thickening around us.
"Then how?""
Michael stared at the brass key in my hand.
"Try that.""
I inserted it into a small slot beneath the keypad.
A green light blinked.
The door unlocked with a heavy mechanical click.
Inside was a narrow room lined with filing cabinets, old computers, and shelves of videotapes. A single desk stood beneath a fluorescent light.
On it lay a laptop, an open folder, and a photograph of Lily.
She was sitting in a chair, her hands folded in her lap, looking directly at the camera.
Someone had written a message across the bottom.
*The child is safe. The mother is not.*
My stomach twisted.
I opened the folder.
Inside were medical records, forged adoption papers, and a document bearing Anna's signature.
It was a confession.
The document claimed Anna had voluntarily surrendered her daughter and disappeared to avoid prosecution for kidnapping.
Anna stared at it in horror.
"I never signed this.""
Michael picked up the laptop.
"There's a video.""
He pressed the space bar.
The screen flickered.
My father's face appeared, seated behind a desk. He looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this, Mark, then you've ignored every warning I've given you.""
He leaned forward.
"Your daughter is alive. For now. But if you want to see her again, you will bring me the original ledger, the trust documents, and the woman who gave birth to her.""
The video paused.
Then another file opened automatically.
A live camera feed.
Lily sat in a small room with white walls. Her pink backpack rested beside her chair. She was crying silently, staring at something beyond the camera.
A shadow moved behind her.
Then a man's voice spoke.
"Tell your father what you told me, Lily.""
My daughter lifted her head.
Her lips trembled.
"Daddy?""
I pressed my hand against the screen.
"I'm here, sweetheart.""
She couldn't hear me.
The man behind the camera leaned closer.
"Tell him who brought you here.""
Lily swallowed.
Then she whispered the words that made Anna collapse against the desk.
"Grandpa said my real mommy would come if I asked nicely.""
The camera shifted.
A woman's hand entered the frame and gently lifted Lily's chin.
I recognized the crescent moon ring on her finger.
Anna stared at the screen, shaking.
"That's impossible.""
I turned toward her.
"What?""
Her voice was barely audible.
"That woman is my mother.""
The video ended.
May you like
On the screen, a new message appeared.
*Bring Anna alone. Midnight. Or Lily learns what happened to her grandmother.*
