Chapter 3: The Photograph in the Floor
The police arrived eleven minutes later.
By then, Michael had collapsed on the mattress, and Lily was sitting beside him, holding his hand with both of hers.
Two officers entered the hallway. The first, a broad-shouldered man with a gray mustache, introduced himself as Detective Harris. His younger partner, Officer Cole, immediately called for an ambulance.
Detective Harris surveyed the hidden room.
"Mr. Bennett, how long has this man been confined here?""
"I just found him.""
He glanced at Vanessa.
"Your wife says she knew about the room.""
Vanessa stood near the staircase, gripping the brass key.
"I can explain.""
"Then start explaining.""
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Detective Harris turned back to me.
"Do you know this man's identity?""
"He's my younger brother. Michael Bennett. He was declared dead eight years ago.""
The detective's expression changed.
"Declared dead?""
"Car accident. There was a funeral. I identified his belongings.""
"Did you identify the body?""
The question stopped me cold.
I remembered the funeral home. The closed coffin. My father's hand on my shoulder as he told me the injuries were too severe for an open casket.
"No," I admitted.
"My father said the coroner recommended it.""
Detective Harris exchanged a glance with his partner.
"Mr. Bennett, I'd like you to think carefully about that.""
Before I could answer, Vanessa stepped forward.
"My father-in-law arranged everything. The paperwork, the funeral, all of it.""
"Why?"" Harris asked.
Vanessa looked toward Michael.
"Because Michael found something he wasn't supposed to find.""
"What did he find?""
She swallowed.
"Documents. Financial records. Something that could have destroyed Richard's reputation.""
I stared at her.
"My father owned half the businesses in this town. What could Michael possibly have found that justified this?""
Michael stirred on the mattress.
"Not businesses," he rasped.
"People.""
The room fell silent.
Detective Harris crouched beside him.
"Michael, can you tell me what you mean?""
Michael's eyelids fluttered.
"Names. Payments. Property transfers. People who disappeared after they asked questions.""
The detective's jaw tightened.
"Where are these records now?""
Michael turned his head toward the hallway.
"Under the floor.""
Vanessa made a strangled sound.
I looked at her.
"You knew about this?""
"I knew there was something hidden. I never saw what was inside.""
"You've had eight years!""
"Your father told me he'd kill you if I touched it.""
"Stop using my name to excuse what you did!""
Lily began to cry.
I immediately knelt beside her.
"Sweetheart, look at me. You're safe. Nobody is going to hurt you.""
She wiped her nose on her sleeve.
"Is Uncle Michael going to die?""
"No.""
I couldn't promise anything else, but I promised that.
When the paramedics carried Michael downstairs, he caught my hand.
"Don't let them take the key.""
"I won't.""
His grip tightened.
"And Mark?""
"Yeah?""
"If Dad is outside, he's not the only one watching.""
The ambulance doors closed before I could ask what he meant.
Detective Harris ordered Officer Cole to secure the hallway. Then he examined the hidden room, running a gloved hand along the baseboards.
"Old construction," he murmured.
"There may be a crawl space beneath this section.""
I fetched a flashlight from the garage.
Behind the mattress, a loose floorboard gave slightly under my weight. I knelt and pried it up with the claw of a hammer.
Beneath it was a shallow cavity containing a rusted metal box.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
"Oh, God.""
Detective Harris helped me lift it out.
The box was heavier than it looked. A small brass lock hung from its front, its shape matching the key Vanessa had received from the old man.
I inserted the key.
It turned with a dry click.
Inside lay several envelopes, a bundle of photographs, and a thick black ledger. Beneath them was a yellowed document bearing my father's signature.
I unfolded it carefully.
At the top were the words Private Custodial Agreement.
Below them, in precise black handwriting, was Michael's full name.
The document described a supposed medical arrangement. It claimed that Michael had been placed under private supervision because of a severe psychological condition and posed a danger to himself and others.
At the bottom was a signature.
Mine.
I stared at it.
"I never signed this.""
Detective Harris took the document and studied it.
"Are you certain?""
"Absolutely.""
My signature was convincing. The same slant, the same sharp final stroke, even the tiny mark I'd always made beneath the letter B.
But it wasn't mine.
Someone had copied it.
I opened the first envelope.
Inside was a photograph of Michael standing beside a car, smiling at the camera. The date printed on the back was eight years old.
The next photograph showed my father standing outside a warehouse.
A third showed Vanessa carrying a baby into a house I didn't recognize.
I turned it over.
Written on the back were six words:
*The child was never supposed to survive.*
My hands went numb.
"What child?"" I whispered.
Vanessa backed toward the stairs.
Detective Harris noticed.
"Mrs. Bennett, I need you to stay where you are.""
"I didn't write that!""
"Nobody said you did.""
She looked at me with desperate eyes.
"Mark, please. You have to believe me.""
I held up the photograph.
"Who is that baby?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
"Then why are you terrified?""
She pressed both hands against her chest.
"Because your father told me never to talk about that night.""
"What night?""
She looked toward the front door.
For a moment, I thought she might run.
Instead, she whispered, "The night Michael was supposed to die.""
Detective Harris stepped closer.
"Mrs. Bennett, did you witness a crime?""
Vanessa's lips trembled.
Before she could answer, my phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
A single message appeared on the screen.
*Put the ledger back where you found it. You have ten minutes.*
A second message followed.
*Or Lily will learn what happened to her real mother.*
I looked up so quickly that the room seemed to tilt.
Lily was standing on the stairs, clutching the pink suitcase I'd brought home for her.
She had read the message over my shoulder.
"Daddy?"" she whispered.
I reached for her.
But before I could speak, Vanessa let out a broken sob.
May you like
Then she said the words that shattered everything I thought I knew about my family.
"Mark, Lily isn't the only child your father took from someone.""
