Chapter 4: The Mother in the Photograph
For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the blood pounding in my ears.
Lily stood on the staircase, clutching the pink suitcase against her chest. Her little face had gone pale, and her eyes moved between Vanessa and me.
"Daddy, what does she mean?""
I crossed the room and knelt in front of my daughter.
"Nothing you need to worry about right now, sweetheart.""
"But Mommy said I'm not the only child.""
I swallowed hard.
"Your mother is frightened. Adults sometimes say things they don't know how to explain.""
Behind me, Vanessa made a wounded sound.
"Don't do that, Mark.""
I turned.
"Don't do what?""
"Don't pretend you can protect her by lying. That's what your father did. That's what I've been doing for eight years.""
Detective Harris stepped between us.
"Mrs. Bennett, I need you to explain exactly what you meant.""
Vanessa stared at the photograph in my hand.
"The baby was a girl. She was born at a private clinic outside town. Her mother was young, unmarried, and desperate. Richard paid the medical bills and promised to arrange an adoption.""
"And then?"" Harris asked.
Vanessa twisted her wedding ring.
"Then the mother changed her mind.""
I looked down at the photograph again. The baby was wrapped in a white blanket, her tiny fist resting against her cheek. Beside her stood a dark-haired woman whose face seemed strangely familiar.
"Who was she?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"I never knew her name.""
"You're lying.""
"Mark—"
"You've been lying to me for eight years. You don't get to decide when the truth becomes too painful to tell.""
Her face crumpled.
"Her name was Anna.""
The name meant nothing to me.
At least, not until I looked at the photograph more carefully.
The woman wore a thin silver necklace with a small crescent moon pendant.
My mother had owned an identical one.
She'd died when I was twelve, and Dad had told us most of her jewelry had been lost during the move after her funeral. Michael and I had searched the house for years, hoping to find her favorite pieces.
I turned the photograph over.
A second line of handwriting had been hidden beneath the first.
*Anna Bennett. Mother of the child.*
Bennett.
My surname.
I looked at Vanessa.
"Was Anna related to us?""
She nodded, tears running down her cheeks.
"She was your father's daughter.""
The room seemed to contract around me.
"My father had another daughter?""
"She was born before he married your mother. He kept her existence secret. Anna found out who he was when she was nineteen.""
Detective Harris took the photograph from me.
"How did that lead to the baby?""
"Anna threatened to expose him. She had documents proving Richard had hidden money, falsified records, and used his businesses to control people. When she became pregnant, he promised her money and protection if she stayed quiet.""
"And when she refused?""
Vanessa's voice dropped to a whisper.
"He took the baby.""
I stared at the woman I'd once trusted with every secret I possessed.
"You were involved.""
"I was twenty-six. Richard controlled the house, the money, everything. He told me the child would be adopted by a loving family. I believed him.""
"Then why is Michael locked in a room?""
"Because he discovered what happened to Anna.""
I looked at the ledger.
"Was she killed?""
Vanessa closed her eyes.
"I don't know.""
The uncertainty was worse than an answer.
Detective Harris placed the photograph inside an evidence sleeve.
"Mrs. Bennett, I need you to understand that withholding information about a possible kidnapping or homicide is serious.""
"I know.""
"Then start helping us.""
Vanessa nodded weakly.
I turned to Lily, who had been standing silently beside the banister.
"Sweetheart, why don't you go to the kitchen with Officer Cole? He'll get you something to eat.""
She shook her head.
"I don't want to leave you.""
I crouched again.
"You remember the pink suitcase?""
She nodded.
"I bought it because I wanted you to have something special from Chicago. I was planning to surprise you.""
"Like a birthday present?""
"Exactly.""
I brushed her hair away from her cheek.
"Now I need you to do something special for me. Stay with Officer Cole until I come get you.""
After a moment, she nodded and followed the officer downstairs.
When her footsteps disappeared, I returned to the box.
The ledger contained hundreds of entries, dates, initials, and amounts of money. Several names were crossed out in red ink. Others were accompanied by addresses.
One name appeared repeatedly.
*E. Mercer.*
Beside it, someone had written the words transfer completed.
I flipped through the pages until a folded sheet fell into my lap.
It was a hospital discharge record dated seven years earlier.
The patient was a newborn girl.
The listed mother was Anna Bennett.
The receiving guardian was Richard Bennett.
But the line marked final placement had been filled in with a different name.
*Vanessa Bennett.*
I stared at my wife.
"You took the baby.""
Vanessa's eyes widened.
"No. I never—"
"You signed this document.""
"I signed dozens of papers for Richard. He said it was an emergency placement. He told me the child had been abandoned.""
"Did you know whose child she was?""
"No.""
I placed the paper on the table.
"Then how did Lily become our daughter?""
Vanessa began shaking her head.
"Mark, I swear to you, I gave birth to Lily. You were there. You held her in the hospital.""
"I know.""
"Then why are you looking at me like that?""
Because for the first time in seven years, I wasn't sure I knew the whole truth about the day my daughter was born.
Detective Harris's radio crackled.
A moment later, Officer Cole hurried into the hallway.
"Detective, we've got a problem.""
Harris turned.
"What is it?""
"The ambulance reported that Michael's medical file was flagged before they reached the hospital.""
"Flagged by whom?""
Cole looked directly at me.
"Someone has issued an order preventing him from receiving visitors. The authorization carries the signature of a judge who died six months ago.""
Vanessa stumbled backward.
Then my phone rang again.
This time, the caller wasn't anonymous.

The name on the screen made my heart stop.
*Dad.*
