Chapter 7: The Mother Who Came Back

Nobody moved.

Detective Harris kept his weapon trained on the woman in the doorway while the forensic team stood frozen around the open metal box. Vanessa clutched the edge of a rusted workbench, staring at Anna as if she were looking at a ghost.

I couldn't breathe.

The woman before me had aged. Silver strands threaded through her dark hair, and a thin scar traced her jaw. But her eyes were unmistakable. I'd seen them in the photograph, and somewhere in the deepest corners of my memory, I'd seen them before.

"Anna?"" I whispered.

She nodded.

"Hello, Mark.""

"You're alive.""

"Yes.""

"Where have you been?""

Her expression hardened.

"Running from your father.""

I stepped toward her, but Detective Harris raised his free hand.

"Ma'am, I need you to keep your hands visible and explain why you're here.""

Anna slowly lifted both hands higher.

"I received a message saying my daughter was in danger. I came to find the person who sent it.""

Harris frowned.

"Who sent the message?""

"I don't know. The number was blocked.""

"Do you have the message?""

Anna reached carefully into her coat pocket and withdrew her phone. Harris instructed her to place it on the floor, then asked an officer to retrieve it.

I couldn't stop looking at her.

"You're my father's daughter," I said.

"Your name is Bennett. Why didn't I know you existed?""

"Because Richard made sure you didn't.""

"Did you know about Michael?""

Her face changed.

"Michael was the first person who discovered I was pregnant. He promised to help me expose Richard's crimes. Then he disappeared.""

"Eight years ago?""

"Eight years ago, your father told the world Michael was dead. Seven years ago, he tried to make sure I was, too.""

Vanessa took a shaky step forward.

"Anna, I swear I didn't know what Richard was planning.""

Anna looked at her.

"You knew enough to raise my child without asking where I was.""

"I was told you had died!""

"And you believed him?""

Vanessa flinched.

Anna's voice sharpened.

"Did you ever see a death certificate? Did you ever speak to a doctor? Did you ever ask why Richard suddenly had a newborn baby and insisted you keep her?""

"I was afraid!""

"So was I.""

The words hung between them.

For a moment, Anna's anger gave way to something more painful.

"I spent seven years wondering whether my daughter was alive. Seven years imagining her growing up somewhere without knowing I existed. And you had her sleeping in the next room.""

Vanessa began to cry.

"I loved her.""

Anna looked away.

"I believe you.""

That answer seemed to surprise Vanessa more than an accusation would have.

"But loving her doesn't make what happened right," Anna continued.

"You were given a child without being told the truth. I was robbed of my child without being given a choice. Richard used both of us.""

I looked at Anna.

"Why did my father take your daughter?""

"Because I had proof that he was stealing money from his companies and using shell businesses to hide payments to judges, police officers, and hospital administrators. I found records connecting him to several missing people.""

"The ledger.""

She nodded.

"Richard discovered I had copies. He told me he would destroy them unless I handed over my baby. I refused.""

"What happened next?""

"He arranged a meeting at the textile mill. He promised to let me see my daughter if I signed a statement saying I'd fabricated the records.""

Her eyes moved toward the staircase.

"Michael came with me. He had found out what Richard was doing and wanted to bring you into it. We thought you could help us.""

A fragment of memory struck me.

Michael standing beneath the flickering light.

Anna crying.

My father holding a folder.

I pressed my hands against my temples.

"I was there.""

Anna nodded slowly.

"Yes, Mark. You were.""

"What did I do?""

She didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she looked at Detective Harris.

"There's something you need to understand. Richard didn't just manipulate people with money. He manipulated their memories, too.

Drugs, alcohol, forged records, staged accidents. He made people doubt what they had seen.""

Harris lowered his weapon slightly but kept his distance.

"Are you saying Mark was drugged?""

"I believe he was.""

I swallowed.

"What happened at the mill?""

Anna's eyes filled with tears.

"You arrived angry. Richard had told you Michael was stealing from the family. You thought Michael had betrayed you.""

"I remember shouting.""

"You did. Michael tried to explain everything, but Richard kept interrupting him. Then your father showed you a document and said Michael had signed away his inheritance.""

I shook my head.

"I would never have believed that.""

"You didn't. Not completely.""

Anna took a breath.

"You and Michael fought. Richard wanted you to hit him. He wanted witnesses to see you lose control. When Michael pushed past you, Richard struck him from behind with a metal bar.""

My stomach twisted.

"I saw it?""

"You turned around just in time.""

The room seemed to darken.

I remembered the sound.

Metal against bone.

Michael falling.

My own hands covered in blood.

I staggered backward.

"I thought I'd killed him.""

Anna nodded.

"Richard told you that you had. He said Michael was dead, and that if you spoke about the mill, you'd go to prison. He promised to make the evidence disappear.""

I could barely speak.

"Why didn't you tell the police?""

"I tried. Richard controlled the first officers who came to the mill. By the time I returned with someone I trusted, Michael was gone. Richard told everyone I had kidnapped my own baby and fled.""

"And you believed Michael was dead?""

"For years, I did.""

A radio crackled beside Detective Harris.

An officer spoke urgently.

"Detective, we've received a report from the hospital. The missing patient has been located.""

Harris grabbed the radio.

"Where?""

The officer hesitated.

"An abandoned property outside town. But there's a complication.""

"What complication?""

A burst of static.

Then the answer came.

"The patient has been registered under the name Richard Bennett.""

Anna went completely still.

"That's impossible," she whispered.

I turned toward her.

"Why?""

She looked at me with sudden terror.

"Because Richard has a twin brother.""

May you like

Before anyone could ask another question, Anna grabbed my arm.

"And if the man who took Michael wasn't your father, then we've been looking at the wrong person for eight years.""
