Chapter 8: The Brother Nobody Buried

The drive to the abandoned property took twenty minutes.

Nobody spoke much.

Detective Harris sat in the front passenger seat, coordinating with the officers surrounding the location. Anna sat beside me in the back, her hands folded tightly in her lap. Vanessa rode in a second vehicle with Officer Cole.

I kept glancing at Anna, trying to reconcile the woman beside me with the sister I had never known.

"Tell me about the twin," I said.

Anna watched the darkening road.

"His name was Robert.""

"Was?""

"Richard told everyone he died when they were teenagers. He said Robert had been killed in a boating accident.""

"But he wasn't?""

"I don't know. I never saw a body.""

I stared at her.

"How many people in my family are supposed to be dead?""

Anna gave a humorless laugh.

"That's what happens when Richard controls the funerals.""

We turned onto a narrow road lined with dead trees. Ahead, the abandoned property emerged from the darkness: a former rehabilitation center with boarded windows and a rusted sign hanging crookedly above the entrance.

Police vehicles blocked both exits.

Detective Harris climbed out first.

"Stay behind me," he ordered.

Inside, the building smelled of damp plaster and old medicine. Flashlights illuminated overturned chairs, empty cabinets, and peeling paint. An officer led us down a corridor toward a room at the rear.

"We found him here," she said.

"He was conscious but confused. He had a forged medical identification card and a bag containing cash.""

"Where is he now?"" Harris asked.

"In the next room.""

I stepped through the doorway.

A man sat on a narrow bed, his wrists secured with medical restraints. His hair was gray, his face gaunt, and a dark bruise covered his left cheek.

For a moment, I thought I was looking at my father.

Then he raised his head.

The resemblance was astonishing, but something was different. His eyes were softer. His mouth lacked the permanent, contemptuous tightness I'd associated with Richard.

Anna gasped.

"Robert?""

The man stared at her.

Then he began to cry.

"Anna.""

She rushed toward him, but Harris stopped her long enough for an officer to check the restraints. Once they were removed, Anna dropped beside the bed and wrapped her arms around him.

I stood frozen.

Robert looked at me over her shoulder.

"Mark," he whispered.

"Who are you?""

He gave a weak smile.

"The uncle you never knew.""

I pulled a chair closer.

"Start talking.""

Robert nodded slowly.

"Richard and I were identical twins. When we were young, he was always the charming one. Everyone trusted him. I was the one who noticed what he did when nobody was looking.""

"What did he do?""

"He forged signatures, manipulated company accounts, and blackmailed people who threatened to expose him. When I confronted him, he arranged my death.""

"How?""

"He paid someone to sabotage my boat. I survived because a fisherman found me. By the time I returned, Richard had convinced everyone I was dead.""

I looked at Anna.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because Robert was living under another name," she said.

"I didn't know where he was until a few months ago.""

Robert rubbed his wrists.

"Richard found me first.""

My stomach tightened.

"When?""

"Last week. He sent someone to bring me here. He wanted me to sign a statement claiming I'd helped him fake Michael's death.""

"Did you?""

"No. But I knew enough to make him nervous.""

I leaned forward.

"Where is my brother?""

Robert looked at Detective Harris.

"Richard took him to the old Bennett estate. There's a basement beneath the east wing. It was used for wine storage before the renovations.""

Harris immediately called for additional units.

"Why would he take Michael there?""

"Because Michael knows where the original records are hidden.""

"The ledger we found?""

Robert shook his head.

"That's a copy. The real records contain the names of everyone Richard paid, every property he acquired under false identities, and every person he made disappear.""

Anna gripped Robert's hand.

"Does the ledger include what happened to my daughter?""

"Yes.""

My pulse quickened.

"Then we go there now.""

Harris stood.

"We're assembling a team. Nobody enters that estate until we have a warrant and enough officers to secure the property.""

Robert caught my wrist.

"There's no time for that.""

Harris frowned.

"Explain.""

"Richard knows Michael has been found. He knows Anna is alive. If he thinks the records are in danger, he'll destroy them.""

"Then we'll move quickly.""

Robert shook his head.

"You don't understand. There's a fire system in the east wing. One switch can flood the basement with fuel from the old generator room. Richard used it to destroy evidence once before.""

The detective's expression hardened.

"Why didn't you tell the authorities sooner?""

"Because I was afraid.""

His voice cracked.

"I've spent forty years being afraid of my brother.""

Anna pressed her forehead against his.

"You're not alone anymore.""

I wanted to believe that was true.

Then Robert looked at me again.

"There's something else you need to know.""

I leaned closer.

"Tell me.""

"Richard didn't take Lily because he wanted to punish Anna. He took her because she was the only person who could inherit the company without exposing his crimes.""

I frowned.

"Lily is seven.""

"Exactly. Richard transferred several properties into a trust in her name. If anything happened to him, she would become the legal beneficiary.""

"Why would he do that?""

"Because the trust contains the original ownership records. He thought he could control it through you and Vanessa.""

I felt sick.

My daughter had never been merely a child in my father's eyes.

She was a hiding place for his crimes.

A phone rang somewhere in the building.

An officer answered it, listened, and hurried toward Detective Harris.

"Sir, we've received an alert from the estate. The basement alarm has been activated.""

Harris grabbed his coat.

"All units, move!""

As we rushed toward the vehicles, Robert caught Anna's hand.

"Don't let Richard get to Lily.""

Anna looked at me.

"He's not going to get near her.""

But when we reached the police cars, my phone rang.

Vanessa's number flashed on the screen.

I answered immediately.

"Where's Lily?""

Her voice came through in ragged bursts.

"Mark, listen to me. Someone came to the house. They said they were taking Lily somewhere safe.""

My blood turned to ice.

"Who?""

"I thought they were police. They had badges and everything.""

"Vanessa, where is my daughter?""

May you like

She began sobbing.

"They took her.""
