Chapter 8: The Voice Behind the Threats
Thomas immediately asked the officers to secure the house.
Nobody was going to meet Richard alone, and nobody was going to let him near Caleb without proper authorization.
But the revelation that my son recognized the voice on Lily's recording changed the investigation.
Thomas replayed the audio through his phone.
The man's voice filled the hallway.
You'll get nothing if the boy talks.
Caleb pressed his face against my chest.
"That's him," he whispered.
"That's the man who told Mom to keep me quiet.""
Thomas stopped the recording.
"Caleb, I need you to listen carefully. You're not in trouble, and nobody is going to make you talk about anything you don't want to discuss right now. But I need to understand something. Have you ever spoken to this man yourself?""
Caleb nodded.
"When?""
"On the phone.""
"Did he tell you his name?""
Caleb shook his head.
"He said I was a good boy when I followed the rules.""
My jaw tightened.
"What rules?""
"Not telling Daddy about the basement. Not telling Daddy when Mom took my dinner. Not telling Daddy about the pictures.""
Thomas crouched lower.
"Did he ever say what would happen if you broke those rules?""
Caleb's fingers twisted into my jacket.
"He said Daddy would go to prison, and I'd have to live with strangers.""
I felt something inside me break.
For months, someone had been using my son's love for me as a weapon against him.
"That's enough for now," I said.
Thomas nodded.
"Agreed. We'll have a trained interviewer speak with him when he's ready. We don't want him to feel pressured.""
An officer approached and told Thomas that Richard's vehicle had been located outside a nearby hotel.
Thomas turned to me.
"Mr. Carter, I'd like you and Caleb to stay somewhere secure tonight. We need to establish whether Richard poses an immediate risk.""
"I'll take him to my sister's house.""
"Does Richard know where she lives?""
I hesitated.
My sister, Emily, lived in Marietta. She'd helped care for Caleb after Sarah died, but she and Richard had never met.
"I don't think so.""
Thomas handed me his card.
"Call me before you arrive. We'll make sure the location is appropriate.""
As I prepared to leave, Lily approached me again.
"Can I come with you?""
I looked at her.
"Where's Brooke?""
"She's with the officer. They said someone will contact our father.""
Lily's biological father lived in Oregon and rarely visited. Melissa had always handled everything involving the girls, and now they were suddenly facing the possibility that their mother might be arrested.
I couldn't promise Lily that I could take her with me, but I wasn't going to leave her without support.
"I'll make sure the investigators know you don't want to be alone with your mother right now," I told her.
"We'll find a safe arrangement.""
She nodded, wiping her eyes.
Then she caught my sleeve.
"Michael, there's one more thing.""
"What is it?""
"Mom has a safe in her closet. She keeps a notebook in it. I saw her put it there yesterday.""
"What kind of notebook?""
"I don't know. But she said if anything happened to her, someone would make sure the papers inside were destroyed.""
My pulse quickened.
"Did you tell the investigators?""
"Not yet.""
"Tell Thomas. Don't try to retrieve it yourself.""
She nodded.
I left the house with Caleb and drove to a nearby parking lot, where Thomas met us before arranging our next move.
For the first time all evening, Caleb looked as though he might fall asleep.
He rested his head against the passenger-side window, watching the streetlights slide across the glass.
"Are you mad at me, Daddy?""
I pulled into a parking space.
"No, sweetheart. Why would I be mad at you?""
"Because I didn't tell you.""
I turned toward him.
"You were scared.""
"Mom said if I told you, you'd get hurt.""
I reached across the console and took his hand.
"Listen to me, Caleb. You didn't do anything wrong. The grown-ups who scared you are responsible for their choices. Not you.""
He stared at our joined hands.
"Even if I ate the dog food?""
My eyes burned.
"Even then.""
He began crying quietly.
I unbuckled my seat belt and pulled him into my arms.
For several minutes, we sat there while he cried into my shoulder.
Then he whispered, "Can we go somewhere without a basement?""
I held him tighter.
"Anywhere you want, buddy.""
We eventually reached a small hotel arranged through the authorities. Thomas assured me that the location would remain confidential while the investigation continued.
I ordered sandwiches and soup from the hotel restaurant.
Caleb ate slowly at first, watching me between bites as though he expected someone to tell him to stop.
When I offered him another sandwich, he shook his head.
"Can I save it?""
"Of course.""
"For tomorrow?""
"You can have food whenever you're hungry.""
He wrapped the remaining half in a napkin and placed it beside his bed.
I didn't make him explain.
After he fell asleep, I called Emily and told her everything I could without compromising the investigation.
She began crying halfway through my explanation.
"Bring him here," she said.
"I'll make up the guest room. He can stay as long as he needs.""
"I may bring the girls, too, if the authorities approve it.""
"Then we'll make room.""
After the call, I sat beside Caleb's bed and watched his chest rise and fall.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Thomas.
*We located the original complaint file. The signature on the anonymous submission does not belong to Daniel or Melissa. We also found a payment authorization linked to the same account used for Caleb's trust withdrawals.*
A second message arrived.
*The payment was made to a private investigator named Adrian Cole. He has previously worked on contested custody cases. We're attempting to locate him.*
I stared at the screen.
Adrian Cole.
The name meant nothing to me.
Then I remembered the recording.
I took the pictures. I made him repeat the statement.
Melissa had been following someone else's instructions.
I called Thomas.
"Have you found the notebook Lily mentioned?""
"Officers recovered a locked safe from the bedroom. We're obtaining the necessary authorization to examine its contents.""
"Could the private investigator have written the report?""
"It's possible. We're checking his records.""
I glanced at Caleb.
"There's something else. My son recognizes the voice on the recording as the man who called Melissa while he was locked in the basement.""
Thomas paused.
"We'll need a formal identification process, but that could help us establish who was directing the abuse.""
After we ended the call, I sat in silence.
I had spent years believing the most dangerous thing that could happen to a family was losing someone you loved.
Now I understood that danger could also come from the people who remained.
My brother.
My wife.
A stranger who had somehow found his way into my son's life.
At 11:43 p.m., my phone rang again.
This time, the caller ID showed a blocked number.
I almost ignored it.
Then I answered.
A man's voice spoke softly.
"Michael, I understand you've been asking questions about me.""
I stood so quickly that the chair scraped across the floor.
"Who is this?""
"You've seen my name in the documents.""
"Adrian Cole?""
A quiet laugh.
"You're learning.""
I stepped into the hallway and lowered my voice.
"Stay away from my son.""
"I have no interest in hurting Caleb.""
"You've already hurt him.""
"Your wife made her own decisions. I merely gave her a way to protect herself.""
"From what?""
"From a man who doesn't know the truth about his own family.""
I gripped the phone.
"What truth?""
He paused.
"Sarah left something behind. Something your brother and I have spent years trying to recover.""
"What did she leave?""
"A document that could destroy several people, including you.""
I felt cold all over.
"You're lying.""
"Ask Patricia Evans about the sealed letter. Ask her why Sarah named a guardian for Caleb before she died.""
I glanced toward the hotel room.
Caleb was still asleep.
"Why are you calling me?""
"Because Richard is on his way to your hotel.""
My heart stopped.
"How do you know where we are?""
"Because Richard has been following your family for years.""
I moved toward the room and checked the lock.
"If you come near my son, I'll make sure you spend the rest of your life in prison.""
The man chuckled.
"You still think this is about custody.""
"Then what is it about?""
His voice became suddenly cold.
"Sarah discovered that Caleb wasn't the only child whose inheritance had been stolen. She found evidence of a much larger fraud, and she intended to expose everyone involved.""
I couldn't speak.
"Where is the document?"" I demanded.
"If I knew, I wouldn't need you.""
The call ended.
I immediately contacted Thomas and reported the threat. He arranged additional security and confirmed that officers were searching for Richard and Adrian.
Then I returned to the room.
Caleb was awake.
He sat upright in bed, staring at the door.
"Who was that?"" he asked.
I sat beside him.
"Someone who wants us to be afraid.""
He looked at me for a long time.
Then he whispered, "Daddy, I think I know where the notebook is.""
I froze.
"What notebook?""
"The one Mom keeps in the safe.""
"How do you know about it?""
"Because she made me carry it once.""
"When?""
"Before you went to Nashville.""
He swallowed.
"She told me to hide it in the basement. But I didn't. I put it somewhere else.""
I stared at my son.
"Where did you put it, buddy?""
Caleb reached beneath his pillow and pulled out a small brass key.
"I hid it in the place where Mom said nobody would ever look.""
He placed the key in my hand.
May you like
Then he whispered the words that changed everything.
"Inside Grandma Sarah's music box.""
