Chapter 6: The Accident That Wasn't Over

I heard Melissa's words.

So did Daniel.

For a moment, neither of them seemed to remember that I was standing between them.

"What blue car?"" I demanded.

Melissa pressed both hands over her mouth.

Daniel stepped toward her.

"Don't say another word.""

I grabbed his arm.

"You don't get to tell anyone what to say in my house.""

He pulled free.

"Michael, listen to me. This has nothing to do with Caleb.""

"My first wife's accident has everything to do with my son if you've been stealing his inheritance!""

Thomas Reed was still on the phone.

"Mr. Carter, I need you to remain calm. Has someone at your residence mentioned a blue vehicle?""

"Yes.""

"Who?""

"My wife.""

There was a pause.

"Please don't discuss the accident further with anyone until I arrive. And don't discard any documents, phones, or photographs connected to the case.""

I looked at the broken phone on the floor.

"I won't.""

"I'll be there shortly.""

The call ended.

I turned toward Melissa.

"Start talking.""

She shook her head.

"I can't.""

"You can.""

"You don't understand what Daniel did.""

Daniel slammed his briefcase onto the coffee table.

"Stop blaming me for your decisions!""

"You told me the car was never found!""

The room fell silent.

I stared at her.

"What car?""

Melissa looked as though she might faint.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Patricia stood and moved between them.

"Both of you need to stop. Michael deserves the truth, but this isn't the way to establish it.""

I looked at the woman who had helped my first wife manage her legal affairs.

"What do you know?""

Patricia took a slow breath.

"Sarah had been receiving anonymous letters during the final year of her life. They concerned money that had disappeared from a business account connected to her family.""

"She never told me.""

"She may have been trying to protect you. Sarah believed someone was monitoring her communications.""

I remembered the strange details I'd ignored back then.

Sarah checking the front door twice before bed.

Sarah asking me whether I'd noticed a car following us.

Sarah once calling from a gas station, asking me to come get her because she'd felt unsafe driving home.

I'd assumed the stress of motherhood and managing the estate had overwhelmed her.

Now those memories rearranged themselves into something far more sinister.

"Who was she afraid of?"" I asked.

Patricia looked at Daniel.

"I believe she suspected someone in her own family.""

Daniel's face twisted.

"That's ridiculous.""

"Then why did you know about the second investigation?"" I demanded.

He didn't answer.

Patricia continued.

"After Sarah died, the police closed the case based on the weather conditions and the lack of evidence suggesting another vehicle was involved. Several years later, a mechanic contacted the authorities. He claimed he'd repaired a damaged blue SUV shortly after the accident.""

My heart hammered.

"Whose SUV?""

"We don't know for certain. The mechanic died before he could provide a formal identification. But his notes mentioned a distinctive crack across the right headlight.""

Daniel suddenly sat down.

It was such a small movement, but it told me more than any denial could have.

I remembered his old blue SUV.

The one he'd driven for years before trading it in.

The one with a crack across the right headlight.

I looked at him.

"Daniel.""

He stared at the floor.

"Tell me that wasn't your vehicle.""

He rubbed both hands over his face.

"I didn't mean for any of this to happen.""

Melissa began sobbing.

I felt as if the ground had disappeared beneath me.

"What did you do?""

Daniel shook his head.

"It was raining. Sarah was upset. We argued about the trust.""

"What argument?""

"She found out I'd moved money from one of her business accounts. I told her I was protecting the family. She said she was going to tell you everything.""

Patricia's expression hardened.

"How much did you take?""

Daniel swallowed.

"Two hundred thousand dollars.""

I stared at him.

"You stole from Sarah?""

"I was going to repay it!""

"That's what Melissa said about Caleb's money!""

He looked up, his eyes red.

"I know how it sounds.""

"No, you don't.""

My voice cracked.

"You were there when I buried my wife. You stood beside me when I couldn't even look at Caleb without thinking about his mother. You helped me pick out her headstone. You told me the accident wasn't my fault.""

Daniel began crying.

"I didn't cause the crash.""

"Then explain the blue car.""

He looked toward the window.

"Sarah called me that night. She wanted to meet. I followed her because I knew she was going to the police.

We argued on the road. I tried to pass her, and she swerved.""

"Did you hit her?""

"No!""

His answer came too quickly.

I took a step closer.

"Did you hit her?""

Daniel covered his face.

"I clipped the back of her car. I didn't mean to. She lost control, and I panicked.""

The room went utterly still.

"You left her there?"" I whispered.

"I was scared.""

"You left my wife to die?""

"I thought someone else would find her!""

I struck the coffee table with my palm.

Caleb cried out.

I immediately turned toward him.

"I'm sorry, buddy. I'm sorry.""

Lily pulled Caleb close, while Brooke stood beside them with tears running down her face.

I looked back at Daniel.

"You let me believe she died because of the weather.""

"I was afraid you'd never forgive me.""

"You were right.""

Daniel began pleading.

"Michael, please. I didn't know she was going to die. I swear to God, I didn't know.""

Patricia took out her phone.

"Thomas needs to hear this.""

Daniel lunged toward her.

I blocked him.

He shoved me hard enough that I stumbled into the sofa.

"Give me that phone!""

Patricia stepped back and called for help.

Daniel looked around the room, breathing heavily. His eyes landed on Caleb.

"Tell your father what you heard," he said suddenly.

"Tell him Melissa made you say those things about him.""

Caleb went rigid.

I moved in front of my son.

"Don't speak to him.""

Daniel pointed at Melissa.

"She was the one who locked him up! She was the one who took the money! I was trying to keep the investigation from ruining everything!""

"By framing me?""

"I didn't write the report!""

Patricia's face changed.

"What did you say?""

Daniel looked at her.

"I didn't write it. I only supplied the information.""

I felt another cold wave pass through me.

"Then who wrote the false statement?""

Daniel hesitated.

Melissa whispered, "Tell him.""

He turned toward her with fury.

"You keep your mouth shut!""

She flinched, then looked at me.

"Michael, I didn't write it either. Daniel introduced me to someone who said he could make the county take the allegations seriously. He told us how to present the photographs and what Caleb should say.""

"Who?""

Melissa shook her head.

"I never met him in person.""

"You're lying.""

"I'm not! Daniel handled the contact. He said the man worked with families involved in custody disputes.""

I looked at my brother.

"What's his name?""

Daniel's mouth opened.

Before he could answer, the front doorbell rang.

A moment later, someone knocked sharply.

"County investigator! Open the door!""

Patricia moved toward the entrance.

I kept Caleb behind me as two investigators entered, followed by a uniformed police officer. Thomas Reed introduced himself, then asked everyone to remain in the living room while the officers secured the area.

Daniel immediately began talking.

He admitted taking money from Sarah's accounts. He admitted following her the night she died. He admitted helping Melissa prepare information for the child abuse investigation.

But he insisted he had never touched Caleb.

Melissa, meanwhile, gave a statement about the basement, the food, and the bruises. She blamed Daniel for convincing her that Caleb needed to be removed from my care.

Neither of them mentioned the man who had coached the false allegations.

Thomas listened without interrupting.

Then he turned to me.

"Mr. Carter, there's one additional piece of evidence we recovered from the original case file.""

He opened a folder and removed a photograph of a blue SUV.

The right headlight was cracked.

The rear bumper had a deep dent, and the hood showed a faint scrape along its edge.

It was Daniel's old vehicle.

Thomas placed a second photograph beside it.

This one showed the SUV parked outside a small office building three days before Sarah's accident.

A man stood beside the driver's door, his face partially visible.

I leaned closer.

I recognized the man.

So did Daniel.

He whispered a name I hadn't heard in years.

"Richard.""

My stomach tightened.

Richard was Sarah's father—or so she'd always told me.

The man she'd claimed had died when she was a teenager.

Thomas watched my face carefully.

"Mr. Carter, we believe Richard Evans may still be alive. More importantly, we believe he may have been involved in the financial activity surrounding your son's trust.""

I stared at the photograph.

If Sarah's father was alive, then the story she'd told me about her childhood was a lie.

If Daniel had been working with him, then my brother's betrayal went far beyond a stolen inheritance.

And if Richard had orchestrated the false abuse allegations, then Caleb had never been the real target.

I looked at my son.

He was watching the adults with the exhausted, frightened expression of a child who had learned that every secret could become a weapon.

I knelt in front of him.

"Buddy, I'm taking you somewhere safe tonight.""

He gripped my hand.

"Are you going to leave me there?""

"No. Never.""

He looked toward Melissa.

"Even if she says you're not allowed to?""

My throat tightened.

"Even then.""

Thomas approached us.

"Michael, the county can help arrange a safe placement while we investigate. Given the circumstances, I strongly recommend that Caleb stay with someone he trusts until we establish what happened.""

I looked at Lily and Brooke.

They were sitting together on the sofa, frightened and silent.

"Can they come with us?""

Thomas glanced at the girls.

"We'll need to speak with their legal guardian and assess their situation separately.""

Brooke began crying again.

Lily wrapped an arm around her sister.

I wanted to take all three children out of that house.

But before I could say anything, Thomas's phone rang.

He listened for several seconds, then looked at me with a grave expression.

"Mr. Carter, we've just received confirmation that Richard Evans is alive.""

I stared at him.

"Where is he?""

Thomas hesitated.

"He's currently at the county building.""

"Why?""

"Because he came forward voluntarily.""

I felt my stomach drop.

May you like

Thomas lowered his voice.

"He says he wants to take custody of Caleb.""
