Chapter 10: My Sister’s Betrayal

“Where is Caleb right now?””

My voice sounded unfamiliar even to me.

Emily was crying so hard that she struggled to answer. Behind her, I could hear traffic and the faint sound of a car horn.

“He’s with me, Michael. He’s safe. I swear he’s safe.””

I pressed the phone against my ear.

“Then why is Richard calling you? Why does he think you can bring Caleb to him?””

“I can explain.””

“That’s what Melissa said. That’s what Daniel said. Everyone in this family has an explanation, and somehow my son is the one who keeps getting hurt.””

Emily went silent.

Thomas Reed stood across from me, watching my expression. He gestured for me to put the call on speaker.

I did.

“Emily,” Thomas said, “this is Investigator Reed. We need you to tell us exactly what Richard asked you to do.””

She gasped.

“Am I in trouble?””

“That depends on what happened. Right now, our priority is Caleb’s safety. Is anyone else with you?””

“No.””

“Where are you?””

“At home.””

“Has Richard visited you?””

“No. He called.””

“What did he say?””

Emily sniffed.

“He said he knew Michael had found Sarah’s notebook. He said the investigation was going to expose things that would destroy our family. Then he told me I could prevent all of that if I brought Caleb to meet him.””

I closed my eyes.

“And you agreed?””

“No!”” she cried.

“I told him I wouldn't do it.””

Thomas leaned forward.

“Ms. Carter, we found emails between you and Adrian Cole. Can you explain those?””

Emily stopped crying.

The silence was worse than any answer.

“Emily?”” I said.

She took a shaky breath.

“I contacted Adrian because I thought Michael was in danger.””

“Why would a private investigator help you protect me by preparing a false child abuse report?””

“I never asked him to do that!””

Thomas glanced at me, then continued.

“Did you give him information about Michael’s work schedule?””

“Yes.””

“Did you provide photographs of Caleb?””

“Yes, but—”

“Did you know the photographs would be used in a child abuse investigation?””

“No!””

Her voice broke.

“I thought Adrian was investigating Richard. He told me Richard had been following Caleb for months. He said the only way to protect the boy was to prove Richard was trying to manipulate the family.””

I stared at the table.

“So you gave a stranger photographs of my son and my travel schedule without telling me?””

“I was trying to help!””

“You could have called me!””

“I was afraid you wouldn't believe me.””

The words struck painfully close to home.

Because by then, I was beginning to understand how many people in my family had convinced themselves that lying was justified if they believed the truth would be inconvenient.

Thomas interrupted.

“Ms. Carter, did Adrian tell you about a plan to remove Caleb from Michael’s custody?””

Emily began crying again.

“He said there might be a temporary placement if the investigation went badly. He told me I could volunteer to take Caleb in until everything was sorted out.””

I stared at the phone.

“You wanted custody of my son?””

“No! I wanted him somewhere safe if Richard came after him!””

“Somewhere safe with you, while I was accused of abusing him?””

“I never wanted you accused of anything!””

Thomas held up his hand, signaling me to wait.

“Emily, listen carefully. Do not leave your home. Do not contact Richard or Adrian. Officers will come to speak with you.””

“Michael, please.””

I swallowed hard.

“I need to know one thing. Did you know Melissa was locking Caleb in the basement?””

“No.””

“Did you know she was withholding food?””

“No, Michael. I swear.””

“Then why did you keep this from me?””

Emily's answer came so quietly that I almost missed it.

“Because I knew you would try to fix everything yourself. And I was afraid you'd get hurt before you discovered what Richard was doing.””

I wanted to believe her.

I also wanted to believe Daniel had made one terrible mistake, Melissa had simply lost control, and the people who'd conspired against me had all been acting out of fear.

But Caleb's bruises were real.

The basement was real.

The hungry child who had asked whether he could save half a sandwich for tomorrow was real.

Good intentions did not erase those things.

Thomas ended the call after confirming Emily's location and arranging for officers to speak with her.

Then he turned to me.

"We're going to investigate her involvement. But the emails don't establish that she knew about the abuse.""

"Can she still help Richard take Caleb?""

"Not without a court proceeding. And we can take steps to protect Caleb while we investigate.""

I nodded.

"What happens now?""

"We locate Richard and Adrian. We verify the financial records. And we find out why everyone is so determined to gain access to Caleb.""

I looked at Sarah's letter on the table.

The answer had to be somewhere in those records.

That afternoon, Thomas received a call from another investigator. Richard's vehicle had been found abandoned near an office building in downtown Atlanta.

Adrian Cole's office had been emptied.

Computers were missing, filing cabinets stood open, and the building manager said a man matching Richard's description had arrived shortly before dawn.

But the most disturbing discovery was a message left on the office answering machine.

Thomas played it for me.

A man's voice said, "The boy is the key. Get him before the estate is transferred. If Michael discovers what Sarah signed, we're finished.""

The message ended with a click.

I recognized the voice.

It was the same man from Lily's recording.

Adrian Cole.

Thomas replayed the message twice.

"We'll have it authenticated," he said.

"For now, it supports the possibility that this wasn't simply a custody dispute.""

"What does 'the estate is transferred' mean?""

"We're checking the probate records.""

My phone buzzed.

A message from Emily.

*Michael, there's something I never told you about Sarah's last week. She came to my house with a little red notebook. She said if anything happened to her, I should give it to you. I never saw her again after that.*

I read the message twice.

A second message arrived.

*I didn't give it to Richard. I hid it because I was afraid.*

I showed Thomas.

He immediately called the team investigating Emily's home.

Before he could finish the conversation, another call came through.

This one was from an unfamiliar number.

I answered.

A man's voice spoke calmly.

"Michael Carter. You've been busy.""

"Who is this?""

"You know who I am.""

"Richard?""

He chuckled.

"Your wife has told you many stories about me. Some are true. Some aren't.""

"Stay away from my son.""

"I have every intention of protecting him.""

"You've been threatening people to get custody of him.""

"I'm trying to prevent you from making the same mistake you made with Sarah.""

I gripped the phone.

"Don't you dare use her name.""

"Then perhaps you should ask yourself why she left a letter warning you about me.""

I glanced at Thomas.

He motioned for me to keep him talking.

"What do you want?""

"The notebook. The original documents. And a chance to speak with Caleb.""

"You'll never get either.""

Richard's voice hardened.

"Then you'll never learn who really killed your wife.""

The call ended.

I stood motionless.

Thomas immediately began coordinating a response.

But the words stayed with me.

Who really killed your wife.

Daniel had admitted clipping Sarah's car. He had confessed to leaving her on the road. Yet Richard was claiming there was another truth.

A truth powerful enough to make everyone in my family terrified of what might be revealed.

Thomas's phone rang again.

He listened, then looked at me.

"We've located Emily. She's safe, and officers are speaking with her.""

"What about the red notebook?""

"They found it.""

My heart lifted.

Then Thomas's expression darkened.

"There's a problem. The notebook contains a signed statement from Sarah, but it also contains a reference to a second beneficiary under the trust.""

"Who?""

Thomas looked directly at me.

"Your son has a half-sibling.""

I couldn't speak.

Sarah had never told me Caleb had a half-sibling.

And according to the records, that child's inheritance was tied to the same estate Richard had been trying to control.

Thomas placed the document in front of me.

The beneficiary's name was blacked out in the copy he'd received.

But beneath it, Sarah had written one sentence.

*If Michael ever learns the truth about this child, make sure he understands that none of this began with him.*

I stared at the page.

Then I asked the only question that mattered.

"Where is this child now?""

May you like

Thomas hesitated.

"We believe Richard knows.""
