Chapter 12: The Girl in the Photograph
The photograph showed Daniel standing beside a dark sedan outside a small house in Savannah.
A young girl stood near the passenger door, her face turned away from the camera.
She wore a yellow raincoat and carried a purple backpack.
I recognized the backpack immediately.
Caleb had one almost exactly like it.
The realization made my stomach twist. Someone had taken a child from the only home she knew, and my brother might be the person responsible.
"Could Daniel have been helping her?"" I asked.
Thomas didn't answer immediately.
"We're checking the circumstances. The photograph alone doesn't tell us whether she was taken against her will.""
"Then why did her guardian report her missing?""
"Because she didn't know where Grace was going.""
I looked at the image again.
Daniel was holding the passenger door open. The girl appeared to be looking at him, not resisting.
That could mean anything.
I refused to decide what had happened before we knew the facts.
"Where was the photograph taken?""
"Outside Grace's guardian's home. A neighbor's camera recorded the vehicle leaving shortly before midnight.""
"Can we track the car?""
"The registration belongs to a rental company. We're working on it.""
I stood and paced the interview room.
Daniel had confessed to following Sarah on the night she died. He'd admitted helping Richard steal from the trust. He'd helped Melissa create a false child abuse narrative.
But taking Grace could mean he'd crossed another line.
I stopped pacing.
"What if Daniel knows where Richard is?""
Thomas looked at me.
"That's one possibility.""
"And what if he's trying to get Grace away from him?""
"That's another.""
My phone rang.
An unknown number.
I answered, putting it on speaker.
"Michael?""
Daniel's voice.
I gripped the edge of the table.
"Where are you?""
"I can't tell you.""
"Where is Grace?""
A long pause.
"She's safe.""
"Then let her speak to me.""
"Not yet.""
"Daniel, if you've taken that child against her will—"
"I haven't!""
His voice cracked.
"Michael, please. Just listen to me for once.""
I laughed bitterly.
"You want me to listen? You lied about Sarah's death. You stole from her estate.
You helped someone frame me for abusing my son. Why should I believe a word you say?""
"Because I know what Richard is planning.""
"Then tell Thomas.""
"I can't trust the police with everything.""
Thomas leaned toward the phone.
"This is Investigator Reed. Daniel, I need you to tell us where you are and whether Grace is in immediate danger.""
Daniel went silent.
Then he said, "She's with me. I'm not hurting her.""
"Is she free to leave?""
Another pause.
"Yes.""
"Has she asked to leave?""
Daniel's voice became strained.
"She wants to see Michael.""
I stared at the phone.
"Why me?""
"Because Sarah told her about you.""
My heart pounded.
"She's never met me.""
"She knows your name. Sarah showed her photographs of you and Caleb. She told Grace that you were the one person she could trust if anything happened.""
I couldn't speak.
Daniel continued.
"Richard found out where she was living. He sent Adrian to collect her. I got there first.""
Thomas signaled for an officer to begin tracing the call.
"Daniel, where are you?""
"I'll tell you if Michael agrees to meet me.""
"No," Thomas said firmly.
"You will provide your location, and we will arrange a safe meeting through the authorities.""
Daniel laughed without humor.
"You think I can walk into a police station and explain everything I've done? I could spend the rest of my life in prison.""
"You may face consequences for your actions," Thomas replied.
"But withholding a child's location will make matters worse.""
Daniel's breathing grew ragged.
Then he spoke directly to me.
"Michael, I know you hate me. I deserve that. But if you want to know what really happened to Sarah, you need to hear the whole story.""
I closed my eyes.
"Tell me now.""
"Richard was in the car that night. He'd been following Sarah because she had evidence of the stolen money. When I clipped her car, I panicked.
I thought she'd stop. I thought we'd talk.""
"You left her on the road.""
"I know.""
"You left my wife to die.""
"I know!""
His voice broke.
"I've spent seven years hearing her voice every time I close my eyes. I told myself I'd been too frightened to help, but that's not an excuse. I should have stayed. I should have called for an ambulance.""
I swallowed hard.
"Why didn't you?""
"Because Richard told me if I went to the police, he'd destroy every person I loved. He said he'd make sure you lost Caleb. He said Sarah's death would be blamed on you somehow.""
Thomas's expression sharpened.
"Daniel, did Richard arrange the collision?""
Daniel hesitated.
"He told me to scare her. He said she had to hand over the documents. I didn't know he'd be there until I arrived.""
"Did he strike Sarah's vehicle?""
"I don't know. I saw him behind her, but everything happened so fast. I clipped her bumper, and she lost control. When I stopped, Richard told me to leave.""
I stared at the table.
The truth didn't make what Daniel had done any less unforgivable.
But it explained why Richard had been so determined to control the story afterward.
"Where is Grace?"" I asked again.
Daniel exhaled.
"At a motel outside Macon. I'll send the address to Thomas.""
"Why didn't you take her to the police?""
"Because she has a copy of Sarah's original statement. She found it in her guardian's house, and Richard knows about it.""
My heart pounded.
"What statement?""
"The one Sarah wrote before she died. It names the people who were stealing the money and explains why she believed they wanted her silenced.""
Thomas leaned forward.
"Daniel, can you send a photograph of the document to the investigator's secure number?""
"I'll send the location first.""
The call ended.
A few seconds later, Thomas received a text containing an address.
He immediately dispatched officers to the motel and instructed them to approach cautiously.
I sat back, trying to process everything.
Daniel had admitted to helping Richard, but he was now claiming to protect Grace.
It was possible he was telling the truth.
It was also possible he was using another child to bargain for his own freedom.
I wasn't going to let either possibility put Grace at greater risk.
Thomas turned to me.
"You're not going to that motel alone.""
"I understand.""
"We'll bring Grace somewhere secure and arrange for you to meet her if she wants to see you.""
I nodded.
Then I looked at the photograph again.
The girl in the yellow raincoat had Sarah's eyes.
I knew that was impossible to establish from a grainy image, but something about the way she held her head reminded me of the woman I'd loved.
An hour later, Thomas received another call.
The officers had reached the motel.
Daniel's rental car was parked outside Room 12.
The door was unlocked.
Inside, they found a half-eaten sandwich, an open bottle of water, and a note on the bedside table.
There was no sign of Daniel or Grace.
Thomas read the note aloud.
*Michael, I'm sorry. Richard found us. I took Grace somewhere he won't look, but I can't tell you where until I know she's safe.
The original statement is real. It proves Richard planned to take control of the estate before Sarah died.*
I stared at the note.
"Did he leave a contact number?""
Thomas shook his head.
"Nothing.""
Then an officer called from the hallway.
"Sir, there's something else.""
He handed Thomas a small envelope recovered from beneath the mattress.
Inside was a photograph of Sarah holding a newborn baby.
On the back, she had written:
*Grace, the day I promised I would always protect you.*
I touched the edge of the photograph.
Sarah had been holding a child I'd never known existed while building a life with me.
I didn't know whether to feel betrayed, heartbroken, or grateful that she'd tried to protect her daughter.
Perhaps all three.
Thomas turned the photograph over again.
Something had been written beneath Sarah's message in a different hand.
*If you want to find the girl, ask Michael why Sarah chose him.*
I stared at the words.
"Who wrote that?""
"We don't know.""
I looked at Thomas.
"Why would Sarah choose me?""
He didn't answer.
Instead, he unfolded a second piece of paper that had been tucked behind the photograph.
It was a copy of a legal document establishing a temporary guardianship arrangement for Grace.
The document named Sarah as the child's mother.
It named Richard Evans as a person prohibited from making decisions about the child.
And under the section titled *Emergency Guardian*, someone had written my name.
Michael Carter.
I felt the room go silent around me.
Sarah had legally designated me as Grace's emergency guardian years before she died.
She had never told me.
But she'd prepared for a future in which she might no longer be there to protect her daughter.
Thomas studied the document.
"This changes things. If the arrangement is valid, you may have a legal basis to help protect Grace while we locate her.""
I looked at the photograph of Sarah and her baby.
For the first time, I understood that the family I'd thought I'd lost had been larger than I'd ever known.
And somewhere in Georgia, a frightened girl was running from the same man who had turned my son into a prisoner in his own home.
I stood.
"Find her.""
Thomas nodded.
"We will.""
My phone buzzed.
A message from an unknown number.
There was no greeting.
No explanation.
Just a photograph of Grace sitting in the back seat of a car.
Her face was pale, and she was holding a piece of paper against the window.
I zoomed in.
The words were written in thick black marker.
*MICHAEL, DON'T TRUST DANIEL.*
A second message arrived.
*HE KNOWS WHERE SARAH'S REAL STATEMENT IS.*
Then a third.
*AND HE'S NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO KNOWS.*
I looked up at Thomas.
"We have a new problem.""
He read the messages, then immediately ordered the officers to trace the sender.
But before he could finish, my phone rang again.
This time, the caller ID displayed a name I hadn't seen in years.
*Sarah Carter.*
I answered with shaking hands.
A woman's voice whispered through the line.
"Michael, if you want Grace to live, you need to stop looking for Richard.""
I couldn't breathe.
The voice sounded almost exactly like my dead wife.
May you like
And then she said the words that made my blood run cold.
"Because Richard isn't the man who killed me.""
