Chapter 11: The Child Sarah Never Told Me About
For nearly seven years, I had believed I knew the most important things about my wife.
I knew how she took her coffee, how she hummed when she was nervous, and how she used to press her forehead against mine when words failed her.
I knew she wanted Caleb to grow up believing that kindness was strength, not weakness.
I knew she loved her family.
But I had never known she was hiding another child.
Thomas placed the red notebook on the table between us.
"We need to establish whether the reference is accurate," he said.
"A name in a private notebook isn't enough to confirm a legal relationship.""
"Then find the name.""
"We're working on it.""
"How can my wife have had another child without me knowing?""
Thomas didn't pretend to have an answer.
"She may have had a child before you met. Or the reference may relate to a beneficiary who isn't biologically related to her. We won't know until we verify the records.""
I looked down at the notebook.
The pages were filled with Sarah's handwriting, dates, and references to meetings I couldn't remember.
One entry had been underlined three times.
*The second child must remain protected until the trust is secure. Richard cannot know where she is.*
The word she was unmistakable.
Sarah had written about a girl.
I thought of Caleb, who had spent months believing that a hungry child deserved punishment.
I wondered whether this unknown girl had been hidden for the same reason—to protect her from people who saw children as tools.
"Does the document identify a guardian?"" I asked.
Thomas checked the photocopy.
"There's a reference to a woman named Grace Miller.""
The name meant nothing to me.
"Can you find her?""
"We're trying.""
I rubbed my face.
"I need to speak with Patricia.""
Thomas nodded.
"She agreed to meet us at the county building.""
An hour later, Patricia sat across from me in a small interview room. She looked exhausted, and for the first time since she'd appeared at my house, she seemed genuinely afraid.
I placed the notebook in front of her.
"Tell me about the second child.""
Patricia stared at the page.
Then she removed her glasses.
"I was hoping we could establish her whereabouts before you learned about her.""
"Why?""
"Because Sarah was afraid that Richard would use the information to gain control of the trust.""
"Who is she?""
Patricia took a slow breath.
"Her name is Grace Miller. She was born two years before Caleb.""
I felt my throat tighten.
"Was Sarah her mother?""
Patricia nodded.
I stared at her.
"Sarah had a daughter?""
"Yes.""
"And she never told me?""
"She wanted to.""
"That's not good enough.""
Patricia accepted the accusation without protest.
"Grace was born from a relationship Sarah had before you met. The child's father was connected to Richard's business dealings. When Sarah discovered that money intended for Grace had been diverted, she became afraid that her daughter would be taken away from her.""
"Who raised Grace?""
"Her maternal aunt, under a private guardianship arrangement. Sarah remained involved, but she didn't want Richard to know where the girl lived.""
I leaned back.
"Why would Richard want a child who wasn't his?""
"Because Grace was named as a beneficiary in a separate trust. If Caleb and Grace both reached adulthood, the estate would be divided according to the terms Sarah's biological father established.""
"And if one child disappeared?""
Patricia looked down.
"The surviving beneficiary could receive a larger share under certain circumstances, depending on the legal determination of the missing child's status.""
I felt sick.
"So someone could profit if Grace disappeared.""
"Potentially.""
"Did Sarah know?""
"She suspected it. That's why she wrote the letter.""
I thought of Richard's demand to take Caleb.
He hadn't been trying to protect his grandson.
He had been trying to control the only child he knew how to locate.
"Where is Grace now?""
Patricia shook her head.
"Her aunt moved after Sarah died. The last address I have is in Savannah.""
"Then why haven't we found her?""
"Because the guardianship records were sealed.""
I stood.
"Can we unseal them?""
"With the proper authorization, yes.""
Thomas entered the room and placed a document on the table.
"We've received confirmation from the probate court. Grace Miller is alive. Her guardian has been located, and officers are arranging a welfare check.""
I released a breath I hadn't realized I'd been holding.
"Is she safe?""
"We don't know yet.""
Thomas glanced at Patricia.
"There's something else. We found a financial transfer from Caleb's trust to a company controlled by Richard Evans. The transfer was approved using a signature that appears to belong to Sarah.""
Patricia frowned.
"That should be impossible. Sarah's signature was frozen after her death.""
"Someone may have used an older authorization.""
I looked at the document.
The transfer date was six months after Sarah's funeral.
Someone had been moving money from the estate long after she died.
And if the transfers were connected to the same people who had framed me, the conspiracy was much older than I'd imagined.
Thomas continued.
"We also recovered emails between Richard and Adrian Cole. They discuss locating both children and obtaining control over the estate before the next probate review.""
"Did they mention Melissa?""
"Yes. Richard appears to have recruited her after she discovered the trust documents. He promised to pay her for helping create evidence that you were an unfit father.""
I clenched my jaw.
"How much?""
"Fifty thousand dollars, according to one message.""
Fifty thousand dollars.
That was the price someone had put on my son's fear.
"Was she paid?""
"We found one transfer for fifteen thousand dollars. We're checking the rest.""
I closed my eyes.
I remembered Melissa buying new furniture, taking the girls shopping, and telling me she'd received a bonus from work.
I'd believed her.
Thomas placed another page before me.
"There's a message from Adrian that concerns us. He told Richard that Caleb had begun asking questions about a notebook.""
I looked up.
"How would he know?""
"We believe someone inside the family was reporting Caleb's behavior.""
I thought of Emily.
Then Daniel.
Then Melissa.
"Who?""
"We're still investigating.""
My phone buzzed.
A text from Emily.
*The officers have taken my statement. I told them everything I know. Michael, there's something else I need to tell you about Grace.*
I called her.
She answered immediately.
"I found Sarah's old letters," she said.
"The ones she sent me before she died.""
"What do they say?""
"She mentioned a girl named Grace. She said Grace's father wasn't the man everyone thought he was.""
My pulse quickened.
"What does that mean?""
Emily's voice dropped.
"Sarah believed the man who claimed to be Grace's father had falsified the records. She thought Richard had arranged it to gain access to the girl's inheritance.""
I looked at Thomas.
He motioned for me to continue.
"Did Sarah name the real father?""
"Yes.""
"Who?""
Emily hesitated.
Then she whispered a name.
I felt the room spin.
It was a name I had seen in Sarah's notebook.
A name I had assumed belonged to a lawyer.
But Emily said it again, making the truth impossible to ignore.
"Adrian Cole.""
Thomas immediately took the phone from my hand and began asking Emily for details.
If Adrian was Grace's biological father, then his involvement wasn't limited to falsifying a report.
He had a direct interest in the trust.
He had helped Richard track the children.
And he'd been using my family to get what he wanted.
Before Thomas could finish questioning Emily, an officer opened the interview room door.
"Mr. Reed, we've received an urgent update from Savannah.""
Thomas stood.
"What is it?""
"The guardian's house is empty. The neighbors say a man came by last night and left with a young girl.""
My blood turned cold.
"Grace?""
The officer nodded.
"Her guardian reported her missing this morning.""
Thomas grabbed his jacket.
"Have we identified the man?""
The officer handed him a photograph taken by a neighbor's security camera.
Thomas studied it.
Then he turned the image toward me.
The man standing beside the car was Daniel.
My brother had already confessed to helping Richard.
Now he had disappeared with the child Sarah had tried to protect.
I stared at the photograph.
May you like
Thomas's voice was grim.
"We need to find Daniel before Richard does.""
