Chapter 9: The Hospital Secret

Nobody moved.

The message remained on my screen.

A single sentence.

Your father didn’t die alone.

I looked at Vivian.

She looked terrified.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Terrified.

And that told me everything.

“What happened after this picture was taken?”” I asked.

Vivian said nothing.

“Vivian.””

Her lips parted.

Then closed again.

Ashley stared at her mother.

“Mom…”

But Vivian only looked at me.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.””

I almost laughed.

“No. I think I finally do.””

Mr. Harrison stepped closer.

“Where did you get that photo?””

I showed him.

His face became serious.

“This was taken inside the hospital.””

“Yes.””

“Who sent it?””

“Unknown number.””

Ethan looked at Vivian.

“You knew this would come out eventually.””

She turned toward him.

“Stay out of this.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“You already destroyed one family.””

The words hit harder than shouting.

Vivian looked away.

I watched her carefully.

“Were you with my father when he died?””

She didn’t answer.

“Were you?””

Finally, she whispered:

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“I thought you arrived after.””

“I lied.””

The honesty shocked me.

Even she seemed surprised that she admitted it.

“Why?””

Vivian looked exhausted.

“Because I knew what people would think.””

“What would they think?””

“That I caused it.””

The room went silent.

Ashley stepped back.

“Mom…”

I stared at Vivian.

“Did you?””

Her eyes filled with anger.

“No.””

Then she paused.

And that pause scared me.

“I didn’t kill your father.””

Nobody spoke.

Because she had chosen those words carefully.

Not I had nothing to do with it.

Not I don’t know what happened.

Just:

I didn’t kill him.

Mr. Harrison noticed too.

“Then tell us what happened.””

Vivian looked at the floor.

For the first time, she seemed smaller.

“I went to the hospital because Daniel called me.””

“Why?””

“He wanted to talk.””

“About the will?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“What did he say?”” I asked.

Vivian looked at me.

“He said he was done protecting me.””

My heart sank.

“Protecting you?””

She closed her eyes.

“I made mistakes.””

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“Mistakes?””

Vivian looked at him.

“You don’t know what I went through.””

“No,” Ethan replied.

“But Daniel did.””

She ignored him.

“Your father wanted to leave me with nothing.””

“That’s not true,” Mr. Harrison said.

Vivian looked at him.

“You don’t know that.””

“I prepared the documents.””

She became silent.

Then I asked:

“What happened next?””

Vivian looked toward the window.

“I left.””

“Before he died?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Her answer was barely audible.

“Because he told me he couldn’t forgive me.””

The words hurt.

Because despite everything Vivian had done, I could hear the pain in her voice.

But pain did not erase cruelty.

Not anymore.

“Then why lie?””

She looked at me.

“Because after Daniel died, I found something.””

“What?””

“A letter.””

My heart stopped.

“A letter from who?””

She hesitated.

“From Daniel.””

Mr. Harrison immediately stepped forward.

“What letter?””

Vivian looked at him.

“The one he wrote before he went to the hospital.””

My mind raced.

Another letter.

Another secret.

“What did it say?””

Vivian looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something I never expected.

Fear for me.

Not fear of losing.

Fear of what I would discover.

“He said if anything happened to him…”

She swallowed.

“He said I should tell you the truth.””

I frowned.

“What truth?””

Vivian reached into her pocket.

Slowly.

Everyone tensed.

She pulled out a folded piece of paper.

My father’s handwriting was visible.

My heart stopped.

“You had this the whole time?””

She looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you show me?””

Her eyes met mine.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Vivian unfolded the paper.

Then she said:

“Because your father didn’t write this letter to expose me.””

She handed it to me.

“He wrote it to warn you about someone else.””

I looked down.

The first line made my hands shake.

Hannah, if Vivian gives you this letter, it means she finally decided to tell you the truth.

I looked up.

Vivian whispered:

“Your father knew I wasn’t the biggest danger.””

I turned the page.

And read the next sentence.

The person you trust most is the one you should question first.
