Chapter 10: The Person I Trusted Most

I read the sentence three times.

The person you trust most is the one you should question first.

The words blurred on the page.

My father’s handwriting.

My father’s warning.

But not a name.

Not an answer.

Just a question.

And somehow, that was worse.

“Who is he talking about?”” I whispered.

Nobody responded.

I looked at Vivian.

She looked away.

I looked at Ethan.

He looked guilty.

Then I looked at Mr. Harrison.

And for the first time since this nightmare began…

he looked afraid.

“Mr. Harrison?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

Because he had always been calm.

Even when Vivian tried to claim the house.

Even when the recording exposed her lies.

Even when secrets from the past appeared.

But now?

He looked like someone had opened a door he hoped would stay closed.

“Hannah,” he said quietly, “your father was careful with his words.””

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

“No.””

He took a breath.

“It doesn’t.””

I folded the letter.

“Then answer it.””

Before he could speak, Vivian stepped forward.

“Daniel knew.””

Everyone looked at her.

She stared at the floor.

“He knew someone close to him was hiding something.””

“Who?””

Her eyes moved toward Mr. Harrison.

The room went silent.

I felt my stomach drop.

“No.””

Mr. Harrison’s expression tightened.

“Vivian.””

She looked at him.

“You know I’m right.””

My mind raced.

The man who had helped my father.

The man who had protected his estate.

The man who had promised to protect me.

Could it really be him?

I looked at Mr. Harrison.

“Tell me she’s lying.””

He didn’t answer.

That silence felt louder than anything.

“Tell me.””

His shoulders lowered.

“Hannah…”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“I need you to tell me.””

He looked at me with sadness.

“I never betrayed your father.””

I exhaled.

Then he added:

“But I did keep something from him.””

The room froze.

“What?””

Ethan looked away.

Vivian crossed her arms.

“Finally.””

I turned toward Mr. Harrison.

“What did you keep from my father?””

He walked to the table and placed another file down.

“I found evidence that someone had been moving money from Daniel’s company.””

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell him?””

“I did.””

“Then what are you hiding?””

He stared at the file.

“The person responsible was someone Daniel trusted.””

“Who?””

Mr. Harrison opened the file.

Inside were bank records.

Emails.

Documents.

And one signature.

My eyes widened.

Because I recognized it.

I had seen that signature thousands of times.

On birthday cards.

On legal documents.

On family papers.

“Ethan?””

My uncle looked away.

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Ethan closed his eyes.

“I can explain.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“You?””

The man who disappeared.

The man my father spent years mourning.

The man everyone thought abandoned us.

“You stole from him?””

“No.””

His voice broke.

“I didn’t.””

“Then why is your name here?””

Ethan looked at the papers.

“Because I was investigating it.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

He nodded.

“Daniel asked me to help him.””

“Then why did you disappear?””

His face changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

“Because I found out the truth.””

“What truth?””

He looked at Vivian.

Then at Mr. Harrison.

Then finally at me.

“Your father wasn’t betrayed by one person.””

My heart sank.

“Then by who?””

Ethan whispered:

“Two people.””

The room went completely still.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked toward the office.

“Your father left the final proof inside.””

Mr. Harrison frowned.

“Ethan…”

“No.””

Ethan shook his head.

“It’s time she knows.””

He walked toward the office door.

The same office where my father kept his secrets.

The same office where someone had been hiding.

He reached for the handle.

Then stopped.

“Hannah?””

“Yes?””

He looked back at me.

“If you walk inside, there’s no going back.””

I stared at the door.

At the room my father had locked away from everyone.

Then I nodded.

“I already lost my father.””

I stepped forward.

“I’m not losing the truth too.””

Ethan opened the door.

And inside…

was something I never expected to find.

A photograph.

Of my father.

Vivian.

Mr. Harrison.

And a fourth person.

May you like

Someone I knew.

Someone I trusted.
