Chapter 12: The Final Test
The silence after the video ended felt impossible to survive.
Nobody accused anyone.
Nobody moved.
But everyone was thinking the same thing.
Mr. Harrison.
The man who had guided me through every secret.
The man my father trusted.
The man who now stood in the center of a room full of betrayal.
He slowly raised his hands.
“Hannah…”
I stepped back.
“Don’t.””
Pain crossed his face.
“I know how this looks.””
“It looks like my father warned me about you.””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“You admit it?””
“I admit your father knew something was wrong.””
My heart raced.
“Did he know you betrayed him?””
“No.””
Mr. Harrison’s voice became firm.
“Because I didn’t.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“Then why did Daniel say not to trust you?””
Mr. Harrison looked at him.
“I don’t know.””
“That’s convenient.””
Mr. Harrison ignored him.
“Hannah, your father created this entire plan because he believed someone would try to destroy his final wishes.””
“Someone?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
He looked at the photograph.
The one of my younger self.
Then he said:
“The person who benefited most from everyone fighting.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Vivian?””
“No.””
Everyone froze.
Mr. Harrison looked at Ashley.
Ashley went pale.
“What?””
“No,” I whispered.
Mr. Harrison shook his head.
“Not Ashley.””
Then his eyes moved toward Ethan.
“Someone used Vivian’s greed.””
Ethan’s expression changed.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying Vivian wasn’t the person controlling the situation.””
Vivian laughed bitterly.
“Don’t make me a victim.””
“I’m not.””
Mr. Harrison opened another file.
“I’m saying you were manipulated.””
He placed the documents on the table.
“These are messages between an unknown person and Vivian.””
I picked them up.
My hands shook as I read.
The house will be yours.
Hannah will be removed.
Daniel will never know.
My stomach tightened.
“Who sent these?””
Mr. Harrison looked at Ethan.
My uncle froze.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Ethan?””
He stepped back.
“I didn’t…”
But then his phone rang.
Everyone looked at it.
Unknown number.
Ethan stared at the screen.
Then slowly answered.
“Hello?””
The color disappeared from his face.
“What?””
He listened.
Then whispered:
“You can’t be serious.””
He looked at me.
And I knew.
Something had happened.
“What is it?””
Ethan lowered the phone.
“The person who sent those messages…”
He swallowed.
“Is at the house.””
Everyone turned.
The front door.
A shadow appeared behind the glass.
Then the door opened.
A woman stepped inside.
Older.
Weak.
But alive.
Vivian dropped her cup.
“No…”
The woman looked directly at me.
And whispered:
“Hannah.””
My heart stopped.
Because I had seen her face before.
In old photographs.
In my father’s locked drawer.
In the memories I was never allowed to have.
My mother.
Alive.
And standing in front of me.
She looked at Vivian.
Then at Mr. Harrison.
Then finally at me.
“I’m sorry it took so long.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“But your father wasn’t protecting you from Vivian.””
May you like
She took a step forward.
“He was protecting you from me.””
